Fly_Guy Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 If all it takes is forage for the Channel Cat introduction then this fishing report is proof positive! There is more forage than there is apex. I was told by Russ that he caught a 6 pound Drum! Be sure to check out my investigation on forage fish. I will continue to catch more forage fish yet again tommorrow. If there is plenty for me then for sure a few thousand channels wont hurt any. http://ozarkanglers.com/forums/index.php?s...c=12358&hl= If I can get enough of you guys to back me, maybe MDC will listen? I will be happy with a cat population to add on to our great trout fishing. Don't channels require water temperatures in the low-mid 70s minimum to grow to any size? Would Taneys average 58 degree water year round be sufficient to sustain a natural population? I still say have the MDC stock wiper - I'd like to catch em (on a fly rod - yahoo!) , they'd eat the 10 inchers, and a trophy wiper fishery would draw tourists.
Trav Posted June 27, 2008 Author Posted June 27, 2008 Channels only require warm water to spawn. As an additional Put and Grow species they would be fine. And Wipers, being they are in the striper Family would be a terrible selection for the lake. For one, the lake isnt big enough to support the colonies they prefer and second, thier forage base(mostly threadfin type shad) isnt prevailent in the lake. To add that forage to the lake would tap to much of what the trout eat to survive. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Fly_Guy Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I knew a fellow in Kansas who had about a 6 acre lake crowded with small bluegill. He stocked a few wiper and they cleaned them out. I think wiper would eat anything they are given when they are hungry. (florida strain largemouths eat trout now, when they have to - not just shiners/gills they evolved eating). I would still rather catch a put-and-take wiper than a catfish - course, I grew up catching channels. Just my opinion.
bigredbirdfan Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Where in are the dead horse pictures??? Surely there are some new ones.
Trav Posted June 28, 2008 Author Posted June 28, 2008 I have all the dead horse pics you need! Haha But I am not tired of this subject quite yet. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
drew03cmc Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 You know, about wipers, the lake has some white bass anyway...I do not see the issue...wipers only grow to 5+# in optimal conditions, with an abundance of forage. Andy
Trav Posted June 29, 2008 Author Posted June 29, 2008 I agree Drew. And like fly guy stated, they will just eat themselves out of a home anyway. We need some of these boys that were caught out of the Red River in Manitoba. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
drew03cmc Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 For nice channel cat pictures, check out this link of fly caught channels on the Red in Manitoba. http://www.warmfly.com/index.php?option=co...mp;topic=1067.0 Andy
Trav Posted June 29, 2008 Author Posted June 29, 2008 Great thinking Drew! If we can sell the idea to fly fisherman then I am sure we could convince the feasibility of Channels in Taney! "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
