drew03cmc Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Those are some serious fish, and after talking to the guy, he uses 9wt outfits, nothing less... Now, how to present this to the state, oh wait a minute...it is the state fish! Andy
Trav Posted July 1, 2008 Author Posted July 1, 2008 Hey Drew, The MDC will stock channels in ponds and lakes for free. http://mdc.mo.gov/fish/stock/ Think if I called and told them Taney was my pond they will buy my story? I do live on the lake! Haha "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Trav Posted July 1, 2008 Author Posted July 1, 2008 Considering that they would need to be stocked and managed as Put and Grow, that would get pretty expensive, not to mention dutiful. Oh, lets also add against the law! "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
drew03cmc Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Laws are meant to be...wait...wrong idea...They only stock lakes and ponds if they are open to public fishing... Hmm, you live on the lake, it is your private pond, maybe...never know...haha Andy
Trav Posted July 1, 2008 Author Posted July 1, 2008 Drew, Your lack of resolutions matches my own. Are we destined to catch nothing but 12 inch stocker rainbows? I hate to say that the 10 inch gills are better sport, but so be it. The truth can hurt a little! I just want a variety with the given of something other than 3 to 5 pound Browns. With all the trash and funky water, It might be 3 years before I see the big brownies again. If we had Cats then we could just fish for those! "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Fly_Guy Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Let me tell y'all about my first day on taney this year yesterday. 12 rainbows, biggest 17 inches, 9 smallies, biggest 18 inches, a goggleye, two bluegill, and NO CATFISH! Just joking - actually, the more I hear you guys talk about channels, the better it is sounding (hating to admit it). I've never thought of those bottom suckers as sportfish before. Guess it stems from growing up around kansas farm ponds where you could catch a 30 inch cat easily for the fun of it (the same i'm sure could be said for largemouths). Moving to Missouri, trout and smallmouth fishing was utopia. It's just hard to imagine going to taney, catching a 12 inch bow, chopping him in half, skewering him with a size 2 hook, chunking said hook along with 1/2 lb sinker and 50 lb test into the river and waiting for a 15 lb catfish while sipping a [insert favorite beverage]. This just doesnt seem like the destiny for taneycomo, and doesn't seem like the dream for the tourist visiting it. That being said, I don't think channels would affect the trout/smallmouth fishery. So, if y'all are preparing a petition for MDC, I'll sign it.
drew03cmc Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Add one more to the channel cat fan club! I was suggesting catching them on flyrods! 10" bluegill fight harder than any trout I have ever had hooked, and are therefore my favorite species to catch! Andy
Trav Posted July 1, 2008 Author Posted July 1, 2008 If we keep this thread going for another 1000 posts or so maybe we can get our point heard! Phil says the MDC does lurk around on this Forumn! "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Fly_Guy Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Add one more to the channel cat fan club! I was suggesting catching them on flyrods! 10" bluegill fight harder than any trout I have ever had hooked, and are therefore my favorite species to catch! I'm trying to imagine my new catfish flybox! I'm thinking some 10 inch long feathers lashed to a hook, and soaked in garlic would do the trick. Call it the #1/2 Roman Rooster!
