It seems that the concensus is consistant with relationship to concerns that a new species will effect the status quo.

If you look at the results of the poll, smallmouths and walleyes(two species that have been confirmed already to exist) lead the list. With only stripers edging them. No way the lake could support stripers without a forage like threadfin being introduced as well and the forage fish would do more harm than the stripers.

I again state that this is a hypothetical poll and that in no compacity are any introductions of any species being considered.

Still would be nice to see some Channel Cats though....Haha

A little more emphasis placed on walleye would be nice...most walleye are stocked at such a small size most end up as forage...a small percentage make it to adult hood.

Yellow perch would be the only non threatening species due to their small size...kind of a unique fish also.

Any serious consideration of introducing any species to any non native water should be well thought out...if there is such a thing these days, lol.

My one cents worth

This is funny. We all know the lake wont change, Unless they bust down powersite dam wich wont happen. But it is fun to talk about!

Drew, I have caught plenty of trout. None were anemic, and until recently the Browns were far from alien. You just need to know how to find them!

Twosets,

The browns eat plenty of bows. Thats not the problem. They need more browns! Fill the lake with 3 pound browns and tell people they cant keep them until they are 6 pounds! Stops all this talk of needing more fun on taney and we can stock more bows for the browns might get hungry.

And I do agree with Greg, sometimes its better to laugh at the likes me, than to let my types to get under your skin. What the heck do we know anyway???????

Trav, by alien, I mean nonnative. They are not native to this continent at all. Stocker rainbows are not healthy, and thus I said anemic, meaning, lacking color, fight, etc.

"Some critical materal about the lake is fine, but since you have never been here and never seen Tany and never intend to, I do not understand your extreme negative attitude."

I say, why would I drive 5 hours to catch a 10" stocker trout when I have lakes not 30 minutes from home where I can catch 15" trout all winter long? Big browns eat plenty of small rainbow trout, but think of how many a 30# pike could eat. I get goosebumps thinking about it! Why drive that far to catch 10" trout with a shot at a 20", when I can catch 20" catfish, or 16" bass all day long here that will outfight a 25" rainbow or brown? I fail to see the value of that wasted trip. I have been there, and seen Taney, just never fished it. My posts are about the lake, not those who make their living off the lake. Those who do so have my blessing for that is a dream job.

You can judge me, judge my opinions, judge my values, but do not judge my conservation-mindedness in regards to supporting native species to the ends of the earth. However, do not attack me without being able to justify yourself and your means.

Put and grow? I believe it is a put and take rainbow fishery. How many 15# rainbows swim in the lake? What first made Taney famous? Browns? Rainbows? The answer is Rainbows, big ones. I firmly believe that Taney should stop being managed like a trout park and begin being managed like a WORLD CLASS stream, if that is what MDC perceives it as. Catch and Release all trout below the dam, to 12 miles downstream. C&R ALL Browns, lakewide. This will promote larger, smarter browns while also enhancing the rainbow fishery. If the goal is to make this a WORLD CLASS stream, they need to take measures to do so.

Put and grow is an MDC term not mine: http://mdc.mo.gov/conmag/1996/11/50.html

See the 10th paragraph. But it is not just their term. It is accurate. The MO trout parks are put and take. The majority of the trout there are caught and taken out shortly after they are stocked. Not so with the rainbows at Taneycomo. Obviously some are taken shortly after being stocked. But many, many are in the river/lake a considerable amount of time from several weeks to several years. And those that survive grow fast and are not that easy to catch. This is due to the slot limit in the upper area of the lake. When you talk about "15#" rainbows - I assume you mean 15" rainbows? There are many of those as well as many, many in the 16 to 20" size especially in the upper lake. As well as even larger fish. To me that qualifies Taneycomo as a World class stream right there. Add in the brown trout and it's just a wonderful place to fish. I just wish the generation schedule was a more predictable. LOL.

As far as the stockers being not healthy, anemic, etc - that may be true for them at the time they are stocked. But give them a few weeks in the river - at that point most of them are beautiful as well as putting up a great fight on a fly rod or other light tackle.

Just differing opinions and no reason for anyone to be put out or upset.

Greg,

I think they should generate at the same time everyday! Would be nice!

The rainbows down stream from Bull are all healthy. I rarely see fish with farm lag though.

Trav some predictability would be really nice. It will never happen though. But nothing is perfect.

I have been off the lake so long I am starting to go manic!

When I get back on ,the first thing Im gona do is catch a bunch of Farm Raised bows!

And catch and release a bunch of sport bass.

Then when that is out of my system, I will dredge the holes fors the brownies!

Aaahhhhh!

This is why I like this forum, you get to debate with people who KNOW what they hell they are talking about. Where can I find the latest population survey to see that they "Put and Grow" terminology is accurate. Not doubting you, I just want to see it.

I am talking about 15 pound rainbows, the kind that made the lake famous, before they stocked browns in the lake.

Obviously we have differing opinions on what makes a water world class, but to me, it is naturally reproducing trout, that do not have to parented (read: stocked) by some government agency.

Trav, everybody on here judges, just not you or I ;)

I saw the population survey on the 11 Point last year sometime, and was wondering if there is one for Upper Taney.
