roy_eros Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 I lost my brand new quantum energy pt reel today over board. Its in about 10 to 12 feet and i know pretty close to were it should be. Anybody know any good tricks to get it back. All i can think of is to pull a crankbait over it. or i was wondering if anyone knows if a magnet might pick it up. Im gonna go back in the morning and try to get it.
Trav Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 I feel your pain. Magnets wont work since most reels today are made of graphite or lighter metal alloys. Cranks are like a shot in the dark. Too hit and miss. I would try tying on 7 or 8 treble hooks in a chain and put a big egg sinker above them and drag the bottom for it. But, that could be frustrating if there are alot of potential snags in the area. Of course, if its only 15 feet down you could swim for it. I know its cold but if you have a quick change of clothes that would be the best shot. Especially if you know right where it is. Good luck, be sure to let me know what you finally did. I have been known to kick a rod in the lake occassionally. If its less than 20 feet I always swim. Haha. Sometimes without success. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
jdmidwest Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Large treble hook with weight on shank dragged along the bottom may snag it. You may have to dive for it... "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Dutch Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Tie a metal stringer to a good nylon line. Open all the hooks and drag with it. I have done this more than once and gotten the rods back.
DoveTail Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 A heavy nylon rope, ski rope with some hooks on it will work. The hooks don't have to be sharp fishing hooks. I had a fish jump out of the water one time and hit a lure about 8" above the water, took my rod and never got it back!
Fishmeister Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Metal stringer is my pick, increase your odds if you throw at right angles to how you think the rod is lying on the bottom, I am assuming you saw it go overboard and got a look at it on the way down.
creek wader Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 I dive and I wish that I could help you. I assume you lost it at Table Rock lake. Given the distance from St. Joseph to Table Rock (gas prices). Also, tank and dry suit rental (best for this time of year). I'm a afraid it wouldn't be cost effective. There are divers and dive shops in the TR area. They are usually looking for any excuse to "get wet". Plus, it'll give thier dive a "mission". Like a search and rescue. Table Rock is usually at it's best visability this time a year. So, a diver would probably have a good chance at finding it. I'd look in the phone book for a dive shop. Give em a call, they may know of an interested party. It's worth a shot. Good Luck. Just looked up the price on the reel. I didn't realize it was so pricey. I'm sure it would be worth getting a diver and offer to pay for whatever gear he'd have to rent. It would probably be worth it. I'd definately would mark that spot. GPS would be the best. wader
Fishmeister Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Roy, did you loose rod and reel, or reel only?
Members vince Posted January 16, 2008 Members Posted January 16, 2008 use the chain stringer and put enough weight on the top hook so you can feel it dragging the bottom. that way you know your back hooks will be where they need to be.
