wily Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 i'd say -- save your money. i got a garmin for my birthday a couple years ago, and i've never used it. no offense
flyfshn Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 Have a Garmin Nuvi200 that I use for work/trips and it works great. Have not tried it while hiking/fishing yet. If you are looking for a simple GPS, check out Ebay for a used Garmin V or other handheld....can find good deals on used ones. Fish On! Mike Utt “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. Dutch Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 You never know how you will use a gps until you have one. I have friends who own them and never take them out. The don't have mapping capability though. I have had a Magellan hand held for several years. I use it in the boat, in the car, and geocaching. I rarely leave home without it. I did have to get software and lake map cards to make it more productive. Don't buy one without mapping capability. They are worthless. I don't ever plan to be without a gps again.
wily Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 mine doesn't have mapping, and like dutch said...it is worthless.
Members asgoodson Posted January 19, 2008 Members Posted January 19, 2008 I have a Garmin 76CSx. Love it, it is handheld and waterproof. It also floats. Why I would agree that in the true picture, this does not provide a lot of value as I am never truly in a situation of life or death (to this point anyway), I like playing with it. I plot alot of points and then download them to the computer...call it geeky, but I get some level of enjoyment of plotting my points on a map and keeping a history, notes of success, ect. On untraveled river with a timeline to get to a certain point, I do find it very useful to plan stopping/camping points so that I do not show up at the take out 4 hrs early and waste precious weekend time by not having the info I need. All in all, I would buy the 76CSx again if I was looking for a GPS.
brittsnbirds Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 I broke down and bought a DeLorme PN 20 this past Christmas. They had a $100.00 rebate going I cannot remember when it expires. This thing does it all plus it has mapping overlay capability. Check out their site; http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeCCtp...p?section=10106. I bought mine for road, hunting and fishing. I also recommend doing a google search for GPS reviews.
