brownieman Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 That's pretty good DD, ...made me think back, my dad used to have some old cane poles in his garage...remember they were longer than the car and he had a sled...old poles were probably 20' or so. I used to tie a piece of braided line off one of dads old baitcasters on the end of the cane pole and whip it back and forth like a fly rod to catch bluegill in a pond by our house...sure was fun trying to lay the line out on the water, sure was fun period...would this be considered youth hillbilly fly fishing, lol...whatever, some things never change. Thanks for joggin a good old memory... bm My friends say I'm a douche bag ?? Avatar...mister brownie bm <><

strangercreek Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 LASGTA, Somtimes basspro runs their Indian Point outfits for $55 buy you have to call around to specific stores, or find the price on the web (the store will match it if the price is on their site). The kits come with a lower end fly line, 8' 6" 5wt rod (moderate action) and a reel that is identical to the BPS Dogwood Canyon (same design, just different material?), which is a really decent reel for the money. The rod has a decent handle and hardware as well. Just trying to help
duckydoty Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 brownieman, My first fishing pole was a 4 ft. tomato stake. Use to run all up and down the creek fishing for chubs and crawdads. Probably used that stake for 3-4 years before upgrading to a cane pole. Then oh my, I got my hands on a zebco 33 when I was about 8 yrs old. Had to take the line out twice a year and stretch it to keep her in good operating order. Didnt take much to keep me happy as a kid duckydoty A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
vanven Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 thank you all for more info.. i think im gonna wait right now due to buyin this house but might pick that kit up this summer and get used to it and then upgrade.. I hope I didnt discourage you at all. My wife never realized what she was letting me get into until it was too late I am in the KC area as well. I know of a nice bluegill trophy area that is very fun when the weather gets warmer. Maybe we can hook up and I have plenty of starter equipment as a loaner for a day. I am not sure if you can call it fishing but as a kid down in Oklahoma we used to drop bacon on a string down into the crawdad holes in the yard. -Jerod
LASGTA88 Posted January 23, 2008 Author Posted January 23, 2008 cool thanks all Jerod - i will most likely have to take you up on that offer.. i love any fishing and i started out on bluegill and perch when i was really young so would be fun.. they are fun if they are big enough and would be good practice for the flyin LA
Trav Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Ive seen guys hold 3 feet of line in thier hand and catch fish. Cant get cheaper than that...Wink...shuffle shuffle jig jig Haha Im sure all you fly guys love that response. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
JobyKSU Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Im sure all you fly guys love that response. Always trying to be an instigator, Trav. Just because we choose one method doesn't mean others bother us. Of course, 3 feet of line would probably be just about right if one was doing the shuffle I'm still trying to find someone to tutor me in the coke-can method. I've seen a few anglers that could outcast most everyone. Ironically, I've never seen anyone using the "pepsi-can" method. I wonder why? ::. JobyKSU Tippet Breaker Extraordinaire
Trav Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 I can do the can method. Learned it while surf fishing. Best way to catch bait. Of course I prefer the bud cans....wink "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
