The G-Bug is also in my top ten. Others include gray or tan scud, tan zebra midge with copper bead and copper wire, ugly midge, dirty olive mohair leech, eggs bodacious, natual rabbit leech, and olive pine squirrel.

I have spent hours restocking my fly boxes for spring and thought I was in pretty good shape after adding about 100 + flys......but..........after reading these posts I am back to the vise.

Lots of good ideas on patterns and colors especially on midges. I have been tying mostly black bodies and having good success, but after reading these posts I will add some other color variations.

THANKS FOR SHARING EVERONE.

From my experience regarding zebra midges - I don't think you can have too many colors. Just about any color will work at times and many, many times the fish seem to key on one particular color. A general rule of thumb I follow is if the sun is out and bright I go with a brighter color. If it is overcast I go with a darker more muted color. My favorite bright color is the primrose and pearl that was invented by one of the guys at RR outfitters. Have you tied any of those? That would be my 2nd favorite color after the green or olive.

If you ever fish in Arkansas (the White and Norfork) - a rusty reddish color has done very well for me every time I've been there. It works well at Taney sometimes too.

About a year ago I was fishing next to a guide on Taney (I won't say his name) and he told me that "you can catch a lot of fish on those little midges but you'll never catch the big ones". I just smiled and nodded. But he couldn't be more wrong. While I do generally catch a lot of average sized fish on them I've also caught a respectable number of 18 to 24" fish over the past 3 or 4 years. I have no doubt that the big fly/big fish rule works in general but sometimes bigger fish do take smaller flies. At least often enough for me.

For fishing Taney I like

1. Soft hackle #14 midge diamond braid caddis green body, dark soft hackle

2. Birds Nest nymph #12 or 14, shaken in a dry fly floatant and fished 12 inches or so below a split shot. You'll need to reapply the floatant after a take.

3. Griffith's Gnat # 18 or 20

1. #20 Ginger G-bug

2. Black unweighted pine squirrel

3. #10 olive or black wooly bugger

4. #16-20 tan or grey scud

.....and if the fish are really tight lipped and I feel like beating the outlets, I use a brown foam fly that imitates hatchery food. It's cheap, but it's fun if you just want to catch fish.

I have all those blends for sale in the shop. I know that I am running low right now on a few colors. Just let me know I would be glad to tie any of the special blends for any one. Plus if you have a little time if I'm am out I can make a little batch of the dubbing why you wait.

Would anyone want to post the recipe for the "slumpbuster"? I don't think it's anywhere on the board.

Thanks,

Greg

I have been dubbing the body on the slump buster with mohair leech dubbing and the new prism dubbing from Wapsi. The reason I have been doing this because it makes a larger body thus moving more water. I think that sometimes fish do not really key in on a certain fly or color they key in on movement and when you you can push more water you make a bigger movement thus creating more strikes.

If any body wants to see this tied we will tie this pat Tuesday Night at the class.

Is it tied basically like the one in the Charlie Cravens tutorial, except you are adding the leech hair dubbing?

Flysmallie, the one you tie is it like the Cravens version?
