Members flyphsh Posted January 29, 2008 Members Posted January 29, 2008 Do any of you out there aggressively fish streamers on the Current? I'm reading Kelly Galloup's "Modern Streamers for Trophy Trout" so I'm a little fired up.... I've had success with average sized fish on mohair leeches but does anybody use sculpin patterns, minnow patterns or other big streamers for the big brown pigs?
brownieman Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 From my experiences...bigger the bait, bigger the fish. There's always exceptions to this but imo this holds true on most any water. Bigger fish would just as soon eat one big meal instead of exaust energy chasing small stuff around. I have found some pretty strange things over the years in the stomachs of various species. bm My friends say I'm a douche bag ?? Avatar...mister brownie bm <><
Gavin Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 You can try the stuff in that book but you will probably be better off with some medium spin tackle and selection of big rapalas. Cheers.
Flysmallie Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 There is also a podcast interview of Kelly on Ask About Fly Fishing Internet Radio. Here's the link. http://www.askaboutflyfishing.com/speakers/kelly/kelly.cfm It's pretty interesting. Â Â
Members flyphsh Posted January 30, 2008 Author Members Posted January 30, 2008 Thanks, Flysmallie. That podcast is very interesting. I come out from Ohio to do a float on the Current every April. I typically fish prince nymphs, copper johns, pheasant tails, hare's ears etc. I catch fish, but still nothing of any real size. Recently, I caught a 21" brown on a sz. 4 mohair leech up here on my local stream. It certainly got me to thinking about trying a different approach. In all of these postings, though, I don't really see too many people fishing streamers in the Current. If they are, maybe they're just not talking about it. Thanks again, flyphsh
Al Agnew Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I love fishing streamers, but on rivers like the Current it's mostly a low-light or murky water deal. When the river is clear and during the daylight hours, catching fish on streamers is usually tough.
Paola Cat Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Flyphsh, Over the years, I've fished zonkers, clousers, and various sculpin streamers from Montauk to Baptist Camp. Have brought some nice fish to hand ... and have lost almost as many. Most of the big fish action has always been around Tan Vat for me. Looking to tie and try some of those newer patterns myself. PC Cheers. PC
flyfishmaster Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 flyphsh, For the Current, you might want to ask Sam Potter (a local guide) about throwing streamer patterns. His web site is http://tightline.biz/. Sam, at times, contributes to this forum as well. Like you I love fishing the Current, but I only use nymphs with great success and have landed multiple browns over 5 pounds between Tan Vat and Baptist Camp. I have to this day never used a streamer pattern on that river. So I'm gaining knowledge as well. Good post. FFM aka: Kim Woo Hoo Fish On!!
Gavin Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 There are a few good fish in there..How big do you think this one is?
