tippet7 Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 A bunch of us from here at Dick Clark's are heading out at the end of Feb for some red and spec fishing around the Corpus area. The majority of those going are using the "heathen" method of fishing, I will be bringing the 8wt with me and try to hook into some nice reds. Does anyone have any suggestions for patterns? I have never fly fished salt water so any other helpful suggestions would be great! thanks You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I've caught reds all around the gulf coast and the Atlantic side of Florida. One fly has worked everywhere, spoon fly. Gold and silver both work but gold has worked better for me through many trips. A popular spoon fly south of New Orleans was painted red, white and blue and those reds would chase and whack that thing like there was no tomorrow. Call local guides and see what's up. I'd even call Feathercraft fly shop in St. Louis, those guys know guides and individuals all around the country. SIO3
Thom Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I stay at Port Aransas some winters. A good place to check out is the flats and intercostal just off the bridge between Corpus and Post Aransas. It is a good place to wade out. The marina on the south side of the exit at the causeway has a great place to find a guide if you wanted to go out in a boat. I've had good luck with most good shrimp imitations as SOI suggested check out the local reports for what's working now. They seem to always come back with limits of specs and/or reds. Thom Harvengt
