SKMO
Talked with a good friend of mine who caught 14 big sow WB in mid to lower Kings last Thurs Feb 1. He is best WB fisherman I know this time of year and he always starts in Feb. He also said it was the earliest he has ever done this well, it was his first trip of the year. This cold weather may make it tough next few days but I expect as soon as some warmer weather returns things will get consistantly good with the big whites on the Kings. SKMO
Low water = easier to find fish? It makes sense. Not sure water level has much of anything to do with it but it might. This is several miles from the "river" section, much closer to the junction with the White, deep water. Might also have something to do with water temp which is 47-50, maybe 10 degrees over most years, which led him to go over and try it earlier than normal. He's a WB predator and real good at it and I always rely on him as a barometer of when the action begins. jay bird
I have heard of two reports of white bass. One in Roaring River arm all big sows, and in the white river by Holiday island. This was last week and this cold front may have changed things.
loo10
White Bass is a fish I've never really pursued. I've heard they are a BLAST to catch. My question... are they good to eat?? I caught a bunch of wipers (hybrids) several years ago & I wasn't impressed. Maybe I didn't clean or prepare them properly. I think they taste great. I know that we usually cut out the bloodline and I think they taste great. I hear if you don't cut that out, they can taste pretty fishy? I don't think they taste as good as a walleye or crappie, but we catch them quite often so when we do keep a few, I can't wait to eat them! Hunter91
We usually catch a bunch in the spring and then the summer when we are trolling for walleyes. I really like to eat them. We just make sure we cut off every bit of red meat on their fillet. It makes for a smaller amount of meat but you don't want to eat the red meat anyway. Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 12, 2006 Root Admin Share Posted February 12, 2006 Red part is fat- has a strong taste. Also be careful not to get any of the oil off the skin on the meat- also fishy tasting. It a firm meat- some don't like it but if it's prepared yummy- it will be yummy. I just like catching them!!! loo10
Thanks. it's been several years and I'm not sure I cut off all the red meat. Anyway...the taste didn't float my boat compared to other fish I ate. Maybe I'll just C & R. Maybe I'll just C & R. loo that red meat contains oil glands which make it taste fishy, cut off all the red meat and try marinading the fillets in sprite or mountain dew, it kills the fishy flavor and adds a bit of a sweet taste thats what I always do
