Zach Bearden Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 So hows the fishing there at crane? We are looking at going to crane and was wondering where there arent that many people. I am looking forward to some wild trout. What is a nice trout here? Or is just catching a trout a nice trout? I miss the wild trout of Montana... So what kinda bugs are in the stream? Scuds, worms, mayflies? Caddis? Whats good? What size tippet? etc. Thanks Guys and Gals! "Its clearly Bree time baby!" Member: 2009 U.S. Youth Fly-Fishing Team. timsfly Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 It is a brushy little creek with very little backcasting room in most places, any trout is a good trout. I have caught trout over 20" out of there, but most are between 10-12" and they fight like they are bigger. I catch a lot of fish on buggers, san juan worms, and glo-balls. I use some bigger nymphs like hares ears and prince nymphs. I drove over it this morning, it is up some, but still clear. I use 5X most of the time, in the summer when I'm fishing beetles, ants, caddis and adams, I use 6X and sometimes 7X. timsfly Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Riffle water, deep holes and oxbows are all there. I fished Crane an hour today and caught 2 10" trout and hooked a couple of more, all on #10 olive bead head woolybuggers. It was very calm and nice today, nobody around at all, the back roads are still very slick, and I think were slicker this afternoon, after there was a bit of melting. I fished just below town, about where the water treatment water enters the creek. duckydoty Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Hey Zack, I fished the lower access area today. Caught 10 fish one double. Had one on that would push 15 inches. Its exactly what were looking for to fish. Lots of long runs, good riffles. Awesome fishing. I'll try to post a report later. Use the same stuff you were using at Roaring River. duckydoty A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
strangercreek Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I walked around at the lower access Sunday morning. Very clear water right now. I am still trying to figure out where the lower CA ends. There is a sign on the road opposite the parking lot that posts the fishing rules, and right next to the bridge one that reads "end of MDC area". The MDC map does not show access on the other side of the road, but does show a small portion right next to the road on Swinging Bridge Road. I am confused. I guess I should check this out with MDC.... I did see some fish in the water at the city park, not sure if they were trout or not as I did not have polarized glasses on and there was a bunch of glare.
