Brian did I read at one time that you used a night time fly line, can't remember the name off hand?

How about you Michael?

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

For the most part I use the Rio clouser wff fly line. I will somtimes use the Rio streamer tip and that fly line is a floating fly line with an intermediate tip great for fishing deeper holes. From the big hole up to the wire a floating fly line will do.

Wayne - yeah.. I was talking about the LumaLux flyline by Rio. I like it pretty good enough I guess.. but when the coating wears the line turns into a daytime stripping / swinging line - cause the coating goes to almost to poo and you just can't refurbish it.

BUT - while it is working good.. it is neat stuff. ---- > Really.

Guys have asked me " Were you that guy with the glowing line.. ?? " cause they saw me charging it on the water. I use my camera flash to nail it on both sides.. (yeah - I take a flash shot on both sides of the fly line.. meaning I have to strip out 40 feet, drop it all on the rocks.. take shot - then grap it all up and flip it over - then take another shot - this seems to last longer than the car headlight charge.

Give the line a try someday.. it is pretty cool. Especially when casting upstream out of my pontoon.. tracking the drifting hourglass eye weighted fly .. it shows you just about where you are.. and that pays dividends when your line takes off and you wouldn't have ever known.

This style of line hasn't quite caught on...

Hi everyone, thanks for the info. I went out and had a great night . I had about 2 hours of day light to hike around and get an idea of where i wanted to fish. I headed out at about midnight, bundled up pretty good as it was about 18-20 degrees out. The moonlight was so bright i only had to turn on my headlamp to switch ties. I fished for about 4 hours, most of which was down below the rocking chair area, and i caught a few rainbows, but nothing very big. I decided to head up near the 1st outlet before i went home, and there i caught a 3 lb rainbow on a size 6 white egg sucking leach pattern with a glow material egg head. I caught 3-5 rainbows up to 14-15 inches or so and by then was just about frozen so i headed in. I have never had my fly reel freeze but it did on this outing, i had to plunge it into the water 5-6 times that night to unlock it so i could strip more line out, or turn the reel to wind the line in.... i won't use that reel in those temp's again. I surely would have lost anythig that was large enough to get into the use of my drag....

I fished during the day light hours the next two days, had a blast swinging soft hackles, and i would like to thank the gentleman that fished with on tuesday afternoon, i enjoyed our conversations and your company....

On Tuesday am while casting dry 20's to midge sipping rainbows i had a 1st, managed to hook up with a good fish, who after 30 seconds of being on my reel managed to get loose. I wound my line and and discovered that my fly line formed hoop end had come off of my line. i lost my leader and all. I have only had 2 or 3 of these types of lines and have never had this happen. Good thing i remembered how to tie nail knots... wierd.

any how thanks to everyone, i will appreciate the info and the fine fishery you have there.

I have used the RIO LumaLux line myself on numerous occassions. The best way I have found to recharge it, as well as glow stike putty, indicators, and the numerous glowing tying materials is with a blacklight. I have an LED blacklight myself, and it does not effect my night vision, such as a camera flash does or any bright white light. The draw back is the cold water discharges the line or any glow products rather quickly. Also, the LumaLux line sits lower in the water, because it is heavier, still constructed within the AFTMA set parameters, due to the propeties put into it to make it glow and is more prone to line drag. LumaLux line was originally designed for East Coast fishing for stripers and bluefish, which the increased night time visablity and weight was needed to deal with the multiple currents while fishing the surf. I do not see any real advantage to using a glow in the dark line at Taneycomo for night time fishing, whether using streamers, nymphs, or midges, unless a person is having casting difficulties and needs to see what their line is doing while casting. The BEST recommendation is to get out during the day and practice ones casting techniques and or practice up stream nymphing, if trying to use this line for nymphing at night.

Guiding someone in the middle of the night - it makes perfectly good sense. I still feel the best way to recharge it is to use a camera flash. I use it for smallmouth bass fishing on the lake at night too.

I've got an old article from 1998 on night fishing in the Lake Tanetcomo artricles at the top of this L/T section.

Here is a link if anyone is lazy : Night Fly Fishing Guide Trip Article

Oh yeah - here is another article I wrote in Dec 2005 : ' Under the Cover of Darkness '

If it not too cold - I might see ya down there.. and I'll bring the Stanleys Ice Off paste to keep the guides from freezing up to bad. (do not use Chapstick.. it'll clog the tiny pores of the fly line )

In 98 the water was off almost every nite. in 88 the water was off every nite. In 78 ten lb rainbow roamed the shores every nite.
