Dutch Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 If you try braid stay away from that crappy Fireline. Get Power Pro.
Paola Cat Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 As far as braids are concerned, I've used most of them ... I really haven't found anything better than Power Pro. For me its got better reel loading, better castability, and is the easiest to work with. I use PLine for heavy cover (20#). I use McCoys, Gamma, Sunline Machine Gun, or Yozuri for general purpose (<20#). PC Cheers. PC
RSBreth Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 See, that's funny, I prefer FireLine on spinning reels, and it's fused, not braided, but whatever. It is a little stiff at first, but after an hour or so of use it is more trouble free for me than Sufix, Spiderwire or Power Pro. Less line wrap around your guides, and superline/flourocarbon leader knots are easier to tie. No matter which superline you prefer, they just about eliminate line twist, and last for at least one season, instead of respooling every third trip.
Wayne SW/MO Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Just be proactive with regard to memory. When you're preparing for a trip, soak your line in very warm tap water, give it 5 minutes or so, then draw the line out over the lawn and without any resistance draw it back on the reel with a minimal amount of pressure with you thumb and index finger. This will take out virtually all of the twist thats in the line, but what you might add in fishing later is a problem you'll have to address as you fish. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Guest Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Sufix Elite is a co-polymer similar to McCoy Mean Green yet stronger. Gamma is probably the best co-polymer IMO. A lot of fishermen dont wind their line on the spool properly. Spool your spinning reel with the spool flat on the floor so that it unwinds in a counter-clockwise position. This allows the line to unwind from the box in the direction that it winds onto the spinning spool. As for braid, I only use it for single hook baits (jigs, texas rigs, frogs, etc). You need some stretch for crankbaits.
DChance Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 I use the KVD Line and Lure conditioner exclusively. Not oily and petro based like Real Magic. I am going to try some McCoys mean green when I need to purchase line next. heard good things about it. I also have went to braid on all my spinning outfits and love it.
flytyer57 Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 I was just going to get on here and ask the exact same thing. I have tired alot to try to get rid of memory but with no results. I did try that Reel Magic spray that you can buy at the reel counter at BassPro and it does retard a little memory but its expensive and doesn't work enough to be worth what it cost. I have tried alot of diffrent brands, running PLine now on my baitcasters and its just as bad at any other. The best I have found so far is, suprisingly, the Bass Pro Shops Xtreme Performance Series (XPS) florocarbon. It still has enough memory to piss me off sometimes but its decent. I think just about all mono is terrible for memory. Any tips of any mono or floro that has little or no memory would be awesome. Switch over to fly fishing. Only gotta worry about a short leader and not a whole spool of coils. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
tjulianc Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 My biggest worry about using braid, is that I fish from a canoe most of the time, and I am worried about getting snagged in a current and breaking my rod if I can't paddle back quick enough. I guess the answer to that problem would be to tie on a mono or fluor leader, or have my drag set lighter. Any other suggestions?
