It's not their job at all!!!! It's the conservation agents job. Ever hear of Operation Game Thief???? The people breaking the rules are counting on people that ignore what they're doing. The only reason I don't report them is because I would spend more time on the phone than fishing. I just think it's funny how opening day they saturate the park and the rest of the year they aren't anywhere to be found.

It's one of the few places I can put my camper year round without having to haul it all over. Generally most of the problems are from locals, from what I can tell. Their attitudes are that they live there so they can do what they want. If it wasn't for the knuckleheads breaking rules and out right lack of respect it would be an awesome place to be. As it stands, I have a good time most times. My friends are there also. The positives outweigh the negatives. So I stick around. Dont you think it would be better if something would be done about the bad stuff?? Yes it's easier just to move on, but why not bring attention to the issues??? To each their own.

Saturday some jack wagon was standing at the outlet in the high bank hole actually netting fish with a hand net and keeping them. It simply amazes me that I can walk around at any given time and see numerous rules violations being broken. Yet, there isn't an agent anywhere close to ticket these offenders. I guess they're too busy watching for nudity and alcohol violations on the river.?

Regs, need some explanation s and definitions
NoLuck replied to Gatorjet's topic in Bennett Springs State Park
If it has soft plastic on it it'll have to be used in zone 3. You can have rubber legs on a fly in zone 1 or 2 though. You can fish a dropper too in the fly zones. Just don't fly fish in zone 3. It's against the regs. -
3lb test line is the best choice. Especially for over reactive kids. 2lb test you can do it , if you set the drag light enough. Also if you fish glow balls, twist the hook to the side just a bit and you'll get more hook ups.

The problem with the 2499spbl is finding them any where. Looks like everyone figured out how good they are and now they get bought up too quick. Also, they used to be $35.00 for a a 100pk. Now they are $40.00. Supply and demand I guess.

Fished Bennett for about 3 hours in Zone 2. Fishing was pretty decent but the number of fish have started to dwindle already. It seems like everybody and their brother and sister and uncle and son and daughter and their step kids are fishing the high bank hole. Everyone leaving with a stringer of fish. Some more than once. It doesn't take calculus to figure out at the rate the stream is being stocked and the rate fish are being pulled out that it'll soon be a low fish count again. People standing in the holes that you should be fishing. People standing at the head of the hole casting sinking line and stripping the entire length of the holes. People shuffling. People walking right in front of you while you are fishing the water they walk through. WTH is wrong with people these days?? It's a shame that people can mess up a day of perfect weather for fishing. Until Zone 1 gets caught up with the amount of fish in the stream Zone 2 will continue to get hammered. At least I can still spend a quiet day at my camper relaxing.

I can always use it Pat. I burned quite a bit opening week. Without any incidents of course.
-
When you headed down??? I'd keep an eye on USGS for water levels. not sure what this weekend hold yet but I may head down to scrub the camper up and check for cracked caulking.
-
Yeah. I'm pretty sure we'll be there Monday through Wednesday. I know I'm tired of driving though. That wind was murder pulling a big cargo trailer home across the country.

Jerry, I may be back in town for the opener. Work is winding down out here when I got here. They just had to put a rush on it. So I'm working nights for a couple weeks. I have vacation days planned from February 29th through the 2nd of March. It may come down to me stopping there on my way back from here. If the fish size is smaller I'll just have to use the bamboo or the Scott glass 4wt then. Maybe even get the 3wt back out. Catching fish is fun as long as there is a fight. Catching dinks on a 9ft 5wt isn't much of a fight. I'll give you a heads up if I'm gonna make it for the opener or shortly after.

Go on Weavers website and they have some info from Havens posted on there. According to that, there were a bunch of eggs and hatchlings washed away.
-
Wrench, you did hear that the hatchery flooded and they lost a bunch of the newly hatched trout right??? Supposed to have gotten some from SOH to replace them. Sounds like to me that they should have left the operation up on the higher side of the old hatchery.

I didn't get down much Jerry. Between working some weekends and the high water and cold weather, I just didn't get down there. The few times that I did make it the fishing was pretty darn good. There is a bunch of gravel moved around now. Be careful if you do make it down there soon. Im leaving Saturday morning for Hoover Dam again. Should only be 2 weeks this time. Maybe 3. I had planned on making the opener and a couple of days after that. Oh well. I'll get down there soon enough.

Anyone headed down for the last weekend of C&R ?? Should be a nice couple of days to fish. No Mardi Gras crowd or super bowl party's for me.

Well, all the snow was pretty well gone last Sunday. The stream is a nice light milky green color and with a good flow. Most of the fish below the Holland dam all have a sore mouth down to the 2nd wing dam. Lots of gravel has been moved around and the head of the island has been made wider where gravel filled in the slough for about another 30 yards. There is a lot of wrosion along the bank from the spring all the way down stream. All the rails on the whistle bridge were either swept off or were bent over so bad they were removed. Lots of gravel was moved around and new pockets were made and old pockets got filled in. Other than that it looks pretty well the same?

No Pat, I didn't head down with the crappy rainy weather. I ended up working over the weekend. So I ended up out in that crap any way. I I had what I thought was food poisoning a few weeks ago. Maybe it wasn't, who knows. Now I'm just waiting for the water to get back down to where it was,so I can see if there are any fish left in the stream. Happy New year to you too.
-
Well score one for the new hatchery manager for having enough sense to at least think about saving them.
-
I'll probably go down and find out. The worst thing that can happen is that I'll be down at the camper with nothing to do but relax.
-
Can anyone tell me if the park is open on Christmas day for fishing????? Seems like I remember seeing it was closed someplace. Yeah I know....it's gonna rain. So what, fish are already wet.
-
I'll sure be happy to get home. I was told 4-6 weeks down here. But after the record rainfall and floods it pushed us back by at least a week and a half. We didn't see a hurricane but we got close to 14" of rain in 4 days. It's all pretty well flat swamp land around here so it didn't have much of a place to go. I'll be on the road on the 30th headed home. I was hoping to be back this weekend to go down and fish a little. But oh well. The camper is all winterized already so no worries there at least. I'm hoping to make it down the opening weekend of C&R. But you never know. Gotta get the propane tanks filled as soon as I get there. I meant to do that all summer but kept forgetting. Anyway... Hope to see you guys soon!!
-
I thought about going down Saturday after I get home Friday night. But it's only 1 day and after being on the road for 7 weeks I'm ready for some real fishing or bow hunting. So it's either off to the San juan River in New Mexico to chase some big trout or up to northern MO to chase a few deer. Im on vacation starting the 31st for 9 days total.

Taking Boys to Bennett Spirngs--Questions??
NoLuck replied to doosanman's topic in Bennett Springs State Park
If you feel like you can put 3lb test line on those reels and the rod will cast the lures or bait then have at it. But....... Light or Ultra light is the way to go. If you are scared of the kids using an open face spinning reel, look at some of the smaller closed face ultra light reels. Zebco still makes them if I'm not mistaken. Stop by Weavers and just look around and ask questions. They'll be happy to help you. -
Taking Boys to Bennett Spirngs--Questions??
NoLuck replied to doosanman's topic in Bennett Springs State Park
Each person need their own stringer. Same as anywhere else really. Each persons fish is supposed to be kept separate and identifiable. So if you leave your stringer sitting tied up close to the bank you're supposed to have something on that stringer with some way to identify it at all times. Even after those fish are cleaned and in the cooler. Trust me on this. I've seen people ticketed for it. -
