  1. It is generally recomended that you should use an 8wt for casting big bass bugs. Especially those made of deer hair. The lightest I would go is a 7wt and step down the size of the fly. For casting my really huge bass bugs made of cork, foam or deer hair, I generally use my 9wt since all I have is a 5wt, 7wt and 9wt. I thought abut getting an 8wt, but the 9wt covers that pretty good.
  2. Looks like that yak is coming along pretty nice. One question. What does it weigh?
  3. Cougars and bear like the smell of fish. They only attack those who keep fish for dinner and feed on them. CPR. Catch Photo and Release.
  4. KC, you got a double ended canoe? Cut the back off and glue on a piece of plywood and ya got yerself a square stern canoe.
  5. I doubt it. But there are shops that cater to just salt water, think Andros Island, Christmas Island... There are also shops that stock a lot of warm water flies and equipment. The Fly Fishers in Milwaukee, WI carries a lot of materials and flies for warm water. They also carry flies for the salt, and salmon and steelhead along with some trout flies etc. I guess you could call them all around fly shops. A fly shop that just caters to trout would only be hurting their own business. Many people have to drive long distances for trout fishing so why not carry warm water flies etc???
  6. A nice size gill on a 5wt is always fun. I'd like to get a 3wt for them. That would be a lot more fun. I have a spinning rod that is a "Micro Light" spooled with 2 pound test. Once in a while, I drag that out and have a lot of fun. That rods tip bends over from the weight of a small Thill Mini Shy Bite float. The rod is 4 1/2 feet long and the tip is only .034 inches. Its rated for 1-4 pound test and lure weight 1/80th to 1/16th ounce. I caught a 14" bass with that one time and that was a major fun event. If I can find a fly rod like that... Maybe a 1wt?????
  7. The only way I could consider someone being a hero is if they put their own life in danger to save someone else. The men and women in the armed forces are hero's. Firefighters who go into burning buildings to save people are hero's. Cops who put their lives at risk to save someone else are hero's. Although kind of stupid, the guy who jumps into a raging river to save another person is a hero.
  8. So ya gonna trade the pontoon for a kayak?
  9. I don't live far from either the Norfork or the White, but I too decided to do a little warm water fly fishing for bluegill tonight. I went to the Pigeon creek arm of Lake Norfork at around 6:30 and tied on a size 12 "Predator" style fly and started catching good sized bluegills. These were caught on my 5wt, with 3x tippet. Had a lot of fun just chasing 'gills for a couple of hours. Sorry the fly pic turned out so blurry. Kinda hard doing macro with shaky hands.
  10. I have a Creek Company ODC 18 that I love and if gotmuddy ever gets into it, I'd love to float the White and/or the Norfork with it. The Buffalo would also be nice as would Crooked Creek. Right now Creek Company has an ODC 920 on sale for $199.99 which you can check out here. Don't buy one of those float tubes that look something like a pontoon. Those are for flat water as someone mentioned earlier. You can see one here. ps. You will need to learn to row one. The oars are more for adjusting your drift like a drift boat would, but they can be rowed like a boat too, although they row up-current like a "barge".
  11. I have 3 St. croix rods, all Avid series, a 5wt, 7wt, and 9wt. I'd snatch that up for that price. I like my St. Croix rods. Once had a factory rep at a fly shop try selling me a Sage bass rod. I told him; "I'll stick to my St. Croix. I don't fish tournaments so I don't need a shorter rod thank you." That Legend Ultra is like a step up from the Avid series. I'm sure you will enjoy it.
  12. Well, I guess I'll have to try it again. I haven't had any luck with chartreuse when I got down here. I figured the water was too clear. So when I got my tying desk set up, I started tying up a lot of olive, brown, black etc. I wonder if these will work.
  13. I've been tying for about 15 years now and I've accumulated a lot of tying materials. A lot of my materials are now almost useless as I have a lot of chartreuse items that I used for smallmouth up in Wisconsin's tannin stained waters. Now that I'm here in the Ozarks, the water is too clear for them most of the time. I have a lot of flies tied with chartreuse that I can't really use down here. When I got here I had to buy a lot of olive and brown materials to fish the clear waters. Anyway, here's a pic of my bedroom showing my tying desk and as you'll see, I have 6 of those upright drawer things to hold all of my materials.
  14. My first vise only cost me about $30. I've since upgraded twice since. My latest vise is a Renzetti Cam Traveler that sells for about $165. I'd like to get a Renzetti Master vise but being unemployed, that just ain't gonna happen. If you're not too sure of wanting to get into fly ting, buy a kit. They come with all the stuff you need to get started, and if you find you don't like it, you're not out a whole lot of money. Be forewarned though. If you do enjoy it, you'll need to put an addition on the house just to keep all your materials. Just kidding. No I'm not. Well, maybe...
  15. That is one huge snapper. That bass ain't too shabby either.
  16. Why u shouting at me? Gotmuddy was the guy who floated the North Fork on Sunday. He usually uses wiggle warts for his smallie fishing. He outfishes me almost every time we've gone and I don't have any. Yet.
  17. Thanks, but I decided to try a Google search for it and found it already. What I could use though is some nice marabou and some olive pine squirrel strips. Got any of them?
  18. I got to get me one or two or three or more of those wiggle warts. They seem to be the hot lure around here. By the way, your scrounger head was attached to the magnet on my landing net when I unloaded the car last nite.
  19. Caught my largest in a pond of about 150 acres. Nope, that was a lake. Was gonna eat it, but I took it to the taxidermist instead. I ate the smaller one I caught that day.
  20. Hopefully you won't see this.
  21. ...to a forest near you.
  22. Does anyone out here in Ozark Angler Forum land have any information about fishing Lick Creek in extreme south central Missouri?????
  23. I haven't used anything but mono. For topwaters the mono would be good because it does have some stretch which could help the delay time in setting the hook. Fluro sinks so that's no good. Not sure about braid, but I have thought about using it for long line trolling. Mono has too much stretch when you have 100 feet of line out. The braid would be perfect for this kind of fishing.
  24. Don't get felt soles. Help stop the spread of didymo and other invasive organisms that get into the felt and go for a ride to the next stream. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We all know about the crap getting into the material of the shoes themselves. But the material isn't as porous as the felt soles.
