  1. I see Halladay's name is in the headline but Carpenter is in the fine print.
  2. One factor not mentioned, here, is the age of the occupant. Reflexes deteriorate over the years and a canoe with poor stability is a bit more of an inconvenience. I personally have not experienced any of this; it is what I hear from my friends.
  3. There is a lot of insightful discussion in this post. It makes me proud you all let me hang around, here.
  4. I am curious how everyone thinks, here. Do we blame Albert for giving into his pride/greed? Or do we blame the ballclub for not paying him what he is worth?
  5. I am impressed by the level of detail.
  6. Cricket-Dude, I am curious. What would actually happen if you said: "Betty-Jane, I am going fishing for a few hours"?
  7. It's amazing how many Illinois lakes are closer to St. Louis than any other lake in Missouri. I need to get that canoe to Coffeen or Washington County Lake.
  8. Hey Woodman, I will trade you my living room for your wood shop.
  9. Candy and I saw Brewer and Shipley at the Focal Point in St. Louis a year ago or so. They said the Lawrence Welk show did "One Toke" back in 1971. It is on YouTube and it is hilarious.
  10. Why not just buy a Creepy Crawler kit like some of us had as kids? You can get them on ebay, ya know. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Creepy-Crawlers-Thingmaker-Full-Set-Detail-Molds-Excellent-Condition-/280775918566?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item415f8c83e6
  11. But they do, at least, get to enjoy the process. That is good to know and I do feel better about the situation.
  12. What a stud. That guy is kayaking UP that waterfall.
  13. Wow! I watched that. You know I doubt anybody takes PETA seriously; on the right or the left.
  14. You know, my father was part of the WWII generation. He and my uncles thought nothing of throwing their Hyde Park beer cans on the ground. No one, then, thought anything about. Then came the "ecology movement" and the Iron Eyes Cody "crying Indian" commercial and we all woke up. But it seems the next generation is going back to those ways. I observed a young kid who was a friend-of-a-friend.... throw an empty beer can on a bank during a float on the Castor River a couple of years ago. I can't alter his behavior any other time but I made sure that was the last beer can thrown on that particular day.
  15. I hope you keep at it. We need to keep those old wood cookstoves around.
  16. A good machinist might be able to manufacture what you need.
  17. Instead of a WTD type of retrieve I employed a DTC (drown-the-cat) type of retrieve. It did bring in a lot of foliage after each cast but I REALLY needed to catch some fish, if you know how it gets, and I knew I would in this pond. I am told all of that skims off after a rain but there had been none, recently.
  18. Thank you, woodman. It is a Rob Roy design. It should be just enough room for me and some camping gear.
  19. Thank you, kevthebassman. If I built this in my basement I could not get it out. I have heard stories of that happening. I moved it to the carport for the epoxy process. And the wife couldn't give a "darn". Now when the Internet goes down that is a different situation.
  20. I haven’t been able to leave the city since Turkey Season (where we did do well on crappie and white bass on Wappappello). My coworker tore his archilles tendon and I needed to cover on weekends. So besides the amazing accomplishment of getting on GotMuddy’s signature I managed to build a cedar strip solo canoe. I would guess Woodman would snicker if he got close to it but is does look good from about ten feet away – but I don’t look so good the closer you get either. I built the strongback from pallets: The molds and the first strip: Off the molds: After installing the inwales and deck: And the finished project: And my first fish caught from a farm pond on a Sammy:
  21. That is Iowa? I had no idea.
  22. I go there every fall with my boat and camp at Indian Creek. The banks are steep and the water becomes deep quick.
  23. JoeD, I have never thought of it that way. I ain't going fishing no more.
  24. Missouri Conservationist had an article about drum, recently. The author claimed it is similar to redfish and included a recipe in the article. That got me thinking. I have been on-call at work all summer and have not been able to leave the area. But I can put the old boat in the Mississippi. Does any one else have any experience with blackened drum?
  25. I did that religiously, at first; but have gotten lax in that the last few years. This outboard had the rings stuck to the pistons with carbon and the cylinder walls were scored when I bought it. I had the power head bored .030" over and replaced the pistons and rings. I am looking for another boat but will keep this outboard.
