  1. they are "investigating" WTF!??? I really hope that's some kind of joke coming from MDC. Last time I checked wildlife code violations were 'strict liability' laws. MDC doesn't have to prove guilt, the fact that you have been caught/ticketed by an agent is proof of guilt.
  2. http://mdc.mo.gov/newsroom/angler-caught-over-limit-jackson-s-rotary-lake JACKSON, Mo. -- An angler at Jackson’s Rotary Lake was recently found in possession of a massive over limit of trout according to a local conservation agent. “When I asked why he had caught and kept so many fish, he responded that he hadn't really thought that he was hurting anything and just wanted to have a fish fry for his friends,” reported Russell Duckworth, the local Protection District Supervisor for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). According to Duckworth, although the angler didn’t intend harm, the number of fish put into the lake is limited and once the fish are caught and gone, there won't be more until the following fall. He said the daily limit is set to provide an equal opportunity to everyone to get out and enjoy the local fishery. In an effort to provide local trout fishing opportunity in Cape Girardeau County, MDC and the city of Jackson have an agreement to stock trout in the Jackson Rotary Lake. The fish are purchased in a joint effort between both MDC and the city. According to MDC fisheries management biologist, Mike Reed, approximately 1,900 trout, as well as a number of ‘lunkers’, were stocked in November of 2010. Catch-and-release only methods were allowed until trout season opened the first of February. In order to possess and keep trout, anglers must have a valid fishing permit and also a trout fishing permit. An angler’s daily limit for trout at Rotary Lake is four, which means that a person cannot catch and keep more than four trout on any given day. The possession limit for trout is eight, which means that an angler can possess no more than eight trout at any time. If an angler catches a limit of four trout in one day, then catches another limit of four on another day, they cannot catch and keep any more trout until they either eat or properly give away the eight trout already in their possession, according to the Wildlife Code of Missouri. Duckworth said the vast majority of hunters and anglers are law abiding and appreciate opportunities to enjoy Missouri’s many great places to hunt and fish. “As with any other opportunity provided to our citizens, there are a few who take advantage for their own benefit,” Duckworth said, adding that conservation agents regularly receive calls from anglers on the lake concerning people who keep more than their limit of fish or make multiple trips to the lake in a day's time to conceal that they are taking more than their share of fish. “We appreciate when people who care about the resource help us and let us know when they see a possible violation concerning fish and wildlife,” Duckworth said. The current over-limit case is under investigation, so further information is not available at this time. The MDC’s 24-hour per day Operation Game Thief hotline, 1-800-392-1111, enables citizens to report information confidentially. If an arrest is made, the reporting party may even receive a reward for their efforts. Information may also be given to Russell Duckworth at 225-9403, the MDC’s Southeast Regional Office at 290-5730, or the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Office at 243-3551.
  3. that kind of thing only happens in egypt... and do we have an email address for Rob Ziehmer?
  4. i always carry mine, just in case, i mean, it might save me from needing to saw my own arm or leg off with a length of 15lb braid. BUT, it's very rare that there is any kind of service in any of the places i've fished or floated, except some lakes. Something about being down in a river valley that makes for horrible reception.
  5. Tennessee shuts down almost all of it's OHV trails down during winter due to the increased erosion that occurs during the winter. The local fishermen put some serious pressure on the state and the state actually went out, did some studies and concluded that the fishermen were correct and OHV trails are mostly shut down now. There are still a few that are open over winter and it brings a lot of heat from fishermen as one of the trails is above the Tellico river and sedimentation has been increasing in that watershed. Last I heard TDNR was holding public hearings to discuss the closure of ALL state OHV trails during winter months.
  6. and an extra drain plug. i've seen a few dropped overboard while trying to get them in the boat, which was forgotten before parking the truck and trailer... d'oh! luckily it's never been me who has dropped it.
  7. besides checking all the above mentioned things, probably the most important thing you need to check and the thing checked least often are the cables that go to your battery(s) they can slowly corrode up inside the insulation and next thing you know, you are miles from help, a storm is rolling in, and all you hear when you turn the start key is a 'click, click, click, click' so make sure you go over the electrical system too and potentially save yourself from a stranding.
  8. where do you get that gopro is coming out with a new camera? That's not part of their plan, for at least the next 2 or 3 years minimum and that's only going to happen if there is some miracle, drastic improvement in making cameras smaller. the goproHD IS their new camera. the older one is not HD. they also just put out a 960 model that doesn't have all the features of the HD model. it's a cheaper less functional version. the only real knocks against the gopro now is it's a fish eye lens amd no zoom. but remember its an "Action Sports Camera" that is wearable. you can't 'wear' any of those other cameras unless you have a huge roll of duct tape. and the fisheye lens allows you a much greater field of view than a regular lens. I will gladly put my gopro up against ANY other camera in ANY kind of a test, including flinging it out a car window at 80 miles an hour, freezing it solid, leaving it at the bottom of the river for 5 or more hours, etc.
  9. Resolution needed for various print sizes Resolution Avg. quality Best quality 0.5 megapixels 3x5 in. N/A 2 megapixels 8x10 in. 3x5 in. 4 megapixels 11x14 in. 5x7 in. 6 megapixels 16x20 in. 8x10 in. 8 megapixels 20x30 in. 11x14 in. 10+ megapixels 25x40 in. 13x17 in. unless you are making pictures 8x10 or larger, you really don't need anything more than 5megs, especially for fish porn. but i understand the 'more is better' concept and it works. but if you aren't planning on printing, i wouldn't be too concerned about megapixels. almost any decent camera these days has more than enough to do the job with excellent results. here is an excellent article debunking the whole megepixels myth: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm
  10. http://gopro.com/hd-hero-accessories/lcd-bacpac/ there is now an lcd screen and new rear door for the gopro.
  11. both accurate statements. ph and temp would prevent them from surviving.
  12. where you at tim? florida? only florida panthers there, no jaguars. jaguars can only live in the rainforests, they require higher night time temps than we have in the states. (not that someone couldn't have released a captive one) I think the closest wild jaguars are in the Yucatan, but dont quote me on that.
  13. gopro is working on a piggyback view screen. the zoom, i agree would be nice, but i can also say i've missed many shots while jacking around with the zoom. the stills are awesome, there are a bunch on gopro's website. unless you are going to make posters or wall murals, 5mp is more than enough resolution. check your pm too.
  14. Sports car racing is back in session!! These are real cars, with real drivers, driving in real conditions. None of that WWF/Neckcar smash into each other, throw helmets at each other, shoot up heroin before the race, can't drive in the rain, can't turn right-hack racing that is popular in the trailer parks of the south. Rolex 24 at Daytona!! on speed tv at 2pm today and will wrap up tomorrow on speed tv. Yes, they race all night. Tune in and enjoy what sports car racing is all about, endurance and driving skill.
  15. i caught a small rainbow trout, thought i'd lip it like a bass, big mistake. as soon as i grabbed it, the fish wigged out and flipped around embedding one of the treble hooks all the way to the shank in the end of my thumb. so there I stand with a hook buried in my thumb with a trout on the other end freaking out! mmmmm pain, feels so good. I managed to get the trout off the other hooks and attempted to pull the hook out myself, but to no avail. Seems your brain doesn't like it when you cause pain to yourself. go figure. so we hopped in the car and drove 20 min back to town. Went over to my gf's parents' house. Her dad is a smart guy and I figured he'd have a remedy, he did. we removed the hook from the lure, then stuck my thumb in ice water for about 20 min. when i pulled my thumb out of the water it was bright red and felt like it was on fire. Jim grabbed the hook with some needlenose pliers and yanked it out swiftly. Bunch of bubbly, yellow fat tissue came out with the hook. I've never felt pain that felt so good in my life! Now I mash down the barbs on all of my lures. Thankfully it was only a finger and not my face or eye.
  16. i doubt there are many in the lake, i'm sure all the raw sewage would kill them off first. lol
  17. ok here's the trick to removing a hook buried in your hand/finger etc. stick the appendage in cold water, ice water works best. keep it in there until if feels like your hand is on fire and you just cannot stand to keep it in anymore, then keep it in there for another 2 mins and stop being such a girl. your hand or whatever will be bright, bright red when it's ready. you won't be able to feel a thing in that appendage either. have someone else, cause you'll wuss out if you try yourself, grab the hook and swiftly and sharply snatch the hook from your flesh. some bubbly yellow stuff might come out with the hook its just fat tissue, suck it up. put some monkey blood on the hole and thank the makers that it wasn't in your eye!
  18. MDC says Elk season should open in about 4 years... probably about the same time jimbo and ned "thin the herd" of mt lions that were "comin right for us"... who can we vote out of office to fix what is obviously wrong at MDC?
  19. 5mp is far more resolution than you will ever need. trust me it's not about the megapixels it's about the quality of the CCD that is taking the image. it might look bulky but it's quite small and with all the mounting options, the issue will be where 'else' you can find a cool spot to get images from instead of where can you put it so it's out of the way. here is the video that sold me on the gopro. it's compared to a $4000 canon HD camera. http://gopro.com/hd-hero-shootout/ keep in mind, if they lens of the gopro's housing gets scratched, you just get another lens, not need to buy a whole new camera. they are coming out with a non fisheye lens for the housing too. the one draw back to the gopro, you can't see your images until you d/l them from the card. no view screen or view finder but with the fish eye lens you really dont need one, it's truly point and shoot. the big drawback i've seen to the other 'waterproof' cameras out there are they have no lens cover. what's the point of having a bang around camera if the lens can get scratched and it not be replacable. not sure if you catch ronnie renner's or travis pastrana's new years eve stunts but they were filmed with gopro cameras. http://gopro.com/pov-angles-of-travis-pastranas-new-years-jump/ remember those chilean miners? http://gopro.com/gopro-shows-view-from-inside-tunnel-of-chilean-mine-2/
  20. their spinning reels are definately not made by Pflueger. they look like quantum designs with the pinned handle and spool sizes. that doesn't mean pflueger doesn't make the baitcasting stuff though.
  21. make that 3 votes for gopro here's a link to my youtube page. http://www.youtube.com/user/bighookah6?feature=mhum all the video there is from my gopro. it's all raw, i just recently got video editing software. but the gopro is hands down the best, durable camerab you can get. shoots 1080 HD video and pictures, shoots a 3 shot burst, pics at 2,5,10,15,30,60sec intervals. shoots 60fps at 720dpi, amazing sound (even underwater), has spot metering available, the housing is modular, durable, replacable, waterproof to 100', etc, etc. best $300 i've spent. http://gopro.com/ also, they have a boat load of mounts for the camera, and best buy now sells the camera. stop looking, go get a gopro, you won't be unhappy.
  22. I totally agree with you here. the cost of lures has gone through the roof. some of those swimbaits are $20+, it better cull the small fish off its self at that price. which is why I only shop the sale items/sales and use my rewards cards to get free stuff. i'll probably cry first time i lose one of my sebile swimbaits.
  23. "We're going to SLAP America back in shape..." apparently one hooker at a time...
  24. screw it then, i'm lying to every law enforcement officer i see from now on. and if a conservation agent tries to enforce a non wildlife code violation on me, i'll be making sure to point out that he's overstepping his jurisdiction. haven't they ever heard of refering a case to the State's Attorney's office for prosecution? seems to work on NCSI miamilachicagonewyorkwestplains...
  25. here's the big issue i've found with most fishing kayaks in rivers, say the Huzzah, something with a gradient of 5 or more and is relatively tight with frequent root wads and numerous current breaks. my trident 13 and my buddy's tarpon 120, both of which track very straight, have a flaw in swift current. the bow is very pronounced in most of these boats, these two in particular and once it's in the current, you are turning whether you like it or not. the coosa and sit inside 'creek' boats have a bow that sweeps up allowing easy turing in swift water without that tendancy to plow once the swifter water hits that deep bow. and for a river boat a shorter, wider boat would be my preference over a longer narrower one makes manuvering in the current much easier. a boat that doesn't track straight but is really stable would be ideal. fast turning with good primary and secondary stability. an innertube on steriods if you will.
