I'm not sure I get that from the article. Is the argument that deforestation allows more carbon to enter streams rather than be taken up by trees? It seemed clear that the human influence is unknown, but unclear on whether there is any effect or if this is the way it is, has been and will be and we never measured it.
  2. more likely linked to felt
  3. Yeah...amazing for lack of better term.
  4. Right, I meand private canoes and private not motorized boats. Also there are national forests, national monuments etc. that are run by the park service but are not parks. I think it's a matter of sematnics mainly on how they are formed rather than how they are run. I think non-parks can be created without an act of congress (if I recall the PBS series correctly.) So it's much easier for a president to designate a scenic riverway or forest etc. than to try to make it a park....but then again maybe national forests are the forestry dept. and not the parks dept...if you think too hard about this you can see why people don't like fed involvement - even when trying to do a good thing they can complicate things too much. I do think we need to be careful what we ask for. If we paint ourselves into a corner we could end up signing up for our "hour" on the river. I like to go out and fish as I like and not have to pay more and make a reservation. I think banning motor boats, atvs and severly limiting if not banning horses would go a long way, and then limiting the canoe count any consessioner can put in would be a good start. I'm not sure we can effectively ban drinking or could enforce that if we tried. I'm not even sure I'm for it if we did.
  5. I don't think private canoes or non motorized boats are a drop in the bucket. Just leave that out of it.
  6. Not really at all getting around the RULE (not law), but following it to the rulemaker's own instructions. I'm not sure why, but evidently that needed clarification. I think even non-perfect cement jobs will drastically decrease the amount of porosity felt will have and put the soles right up there with every other part of a wader or boot that gets in the water. I might give this a try before I find somebody to vibram my boots. BTW, I sent an email to William Joseph to inquire about direct replacement non-felt soles for W2O boots, but got now response.
  7. It was in fact tongue and cheek - it's a reference to "A River Runs Through It." But it does point to the religious allusions made in the book. Didn't you know that the disciples were all fly fisherman and that John, Jeusus' favorite was a dry fly fisherman??
  8. Honestly I don't think there is an appropriate time. Really though if the meathunters could follow the same etiquette that the rest of us recognize it wouldn't be that big of a deal.
  9. Ah, so it's time again for my yearly rant about how horribly inappropriate it is to have a tournament on an open weekend in the park. Have fun but TRY to have some respect for fisherman not participating in the tournament.
  10. Try the 47 bridge area. Close drive from kinston and significantly better water for fishing I think.
  11. And disgrace the fish by not knowing the proper way to catch them!? blasphemy. Hey I could catch a lot with a limb line or explosives or snagging, but don't find any joy in it. It's never been about just catching them, but how I was catching them. I do have something to prove to myself and enjoy the challenge even in the process of being skunked. We all have our limits. I just agree about "egg" pattern.
  12. Amen to that. Incedently I once found that with BWO's the wings mad a big difference. Wouldn't have thought it, but the hackle wing was the trick. Normally I don't think the wings are that big of a deal. Other than that I have found that sunk dries or soft hackles during BWO time can work suprisingly well. I think some of beatis are divers. http://www.classicflytying.com/pattern3296.html
  13. ...and they remain ever so popular today because of exactly which benefit?

    Eagles Park

Getting your stuff donw the river without a boat of some kind is a trick, but there are a couple of good gravel bars not too far from Baptist. If you're not up for as much leg work the options are fewer. The campground at Montauk can be annoying if you go at the wrong time of year or stay in the wrong loop. I use loop 4 because it's not as nice and has smaller sites with a lot of RV old folks. But they tend to retreat to the interior before night fall and it get quiet really quick. It's no gravel bar but better than the craziness you can get in loop 2.
  15. Dr. Slick makes a nice tool kit. Around $50 - as far as I'm concerned it's a steal.
  16. If only they would get biologists involved in this stuff...oh wait...they do.
  17. Classically heavy and overly complicated. Them big ones will be gettin away because you're trying to use a auto pickup line contraption to fight a fish. Now mounted on a wall...you might have something there...if you can find a way to anchor it without it ripping the drywall down. Don't blame me - you didn't take the advice of the great Sheridan Anderson. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheridan_Anderson
  18. I think it would be pretty tough to claim defense if you shot the thing with a hunting rifle.

    Fried Okra

Buttermilk is the real key for fried stuff. Buttermilk first, then seasoned 2-1 flour to cornmeal. Other important part is knowing your oil temperature. 350, and do batches small enough not to drop the temp too far - cast iron helps with this. But if you ever wondered how to get batter to stick and to end up like it does at restaraunsts, try those little tricks. Okra's the only thing loving the heat and dryness for me this year. Only trick has been catching it before it's 10" long.
  20. I'd like to know just how it was shot and what with. If you tell me a hunting rifle then I say prosecute. If it's a handgun or shotgun then I can buy that a landowner was somehow accidently close enough to be legitimately threatened and used the weapon they carry for protection against it. But honestly, I don't think most landowners in this state do carry a sidearm when out on the property. What are they protecting against? Chances are this was found on a camera hunted and shot with a long range rifle. And if that is the case I say prosecute.
  21. Didn't mean to imply anything accept that the article concluded that felt is indeed a culprit. Sorry if I was confusing. My only real issue is that they're doing this in september not at least one year in advance with warning. The cost is a bummer. But it's worse for guys that jumped on a good deal at closeout time for this gear (right now) and now will have to pony up more cash. I look forward to any solution that MDC is coming up with to avoid an all out wader boot mass purchase. If I do end up with new boots I'd definitely look @ the corkers. If they do invent a antimicrobial felt substitute, I'm sure it will be better to swap out the soles than to buy new boots again. I also really like my william joseph boots. Maybe they can be resoled.
  22. Doesn't matter. If it can be spread from there, and we don't want it spread from there, then we should do what we can to stop it. You are correct that some simple microbes can go dormant and survive for long periods of time in an inhabitable environment, I don't believe diatoms and algeas are among them. Don't they say a 48 hr. drying kills it? It's a very long shot that this was somewhere down in the mud waiting for the chance to bloom. It is an invasive, and questioning where it came from is important, but mostly for the effort of containment. What we should be asking is whether felt soles are a legit transmitter. Check this out. http://www.stopans.org/Science_of_felt.php
  23. I don't think this is a big mystery, and it's perfectly reasonable to assume that felt soles are a terrific way to move this stuff around. Like I said, I don't like buying new boots - and If MDC is going to announce this for next season, they'd better get into action like two months ago. There are a lot of guys that won't think about trout fishing from now until next season. If they had made the decision in the heart of trout season, or at the beginning of the prior season, the word would be out to essentially all fisherman, and we would have already complained and had time to find a good deal on new boots. At this point they need to get vendors of liscences to pass the news along at the point of all sales and put up lots of signage. I'm sure the trout park concessionaires and independant fly shops at the parks are going to make a killing on boots next year.
