Is there a map located somewhere? I’m not sure where the access points are.
-
It’s on my list but didn’t know how hard the access was. I may have to bag on it, lol
-
How clever is this? I must be somewhere between 1 and 3 lol.

Nice catch! Beautiful McCloud bows. Was there myself a couple weeks back for the first time and fail in love with that little piece of heaven.

I'll have to check this out, thanks for sharing! -
I always look forward to the Dove Season Opener each year. I hunt designated dove fields planted with Sunflowers by KDWP. It's an off year when you don't limit out by 8:30 or so. Mojo Dove are the bomb!

😳. Surely you gist? Lol

$7 a dozen at the local bait shop. Catfish love em almost as much as bluegill.

I’ve never fished Barren Fork. Is it similar to Crane Creek in size and features?
-
BTW, This was my largest fish on Saturday morning. About 9 or 10”. Caught on a parachute Adam’s cast up stream along a run.
-
Great advice! They are definitely easily spooked. I need to practice the bow and arrow cast since long casts are difficult when you find that perfect run and the trees are crowding in. 😆

Nice Pics! That first trout is a nice chunky rainbow.

I usually come across a Northern Water Snake while wading in Bennett Spring. While I know them to be harmless, It always gives me pause until I determine what he’s doing and where he’s going.

Call it stunned! Lol

While down fly fishing a nearby stream Saturday, my brother-in-law, nephew, and I decided to run over to RR and do some fishing while we were in the neighborhood. We were just about ready to call it the day when my nephew decided to try another spot close by. Low and behold the remarkable result! Weighed at the park store, she came in at a whopping 7 lbs 10 oz!

I’m far from an expert and more like an initiate. Only fished a very small portion of the stream but did not see a single snake. It was almost a let down, 🤣

My first McCloud Rainbow from early this morning. Beautiful fish if not a little smallish caught 4 this morning biggest around 9”. Water is nice and cold where we fished
-
What a beautiful stream! Will be fishing in the morning early but stopped by to check the creek out. Simply pristine! Seen several nice trout in this creek bend. The water is gin clear and looking great.

I was driving by Arma, KS on 69 one day when I spied a dead dillo in the road. That town surely missed out, the high school mascot should have been named, wait for it, the Arma Dillo's. 😆🤣

Do you gent's use waders when fishing Crane Creek? One of the tips I've read here says to stay out of the water as much as possible to prevent spooking the critters. I'm not against wading without them, particularly if I'm only going to enter the stream on occasion.
-
You mentioned Ft Scott so I had to add something. Bone Creek reservoir is south of there along 69 highway. There are more rattlers around that lake than you can shake a stick at. Relative of mine lives near there and has stopped and collected several rattles from crushed snakes found along the back roads by the lake. If he sees a dead one he’ll stop and cut off the rattle.

Thanks for the info Dutch! I was looking at google map and I see Swinging Bridge Rd and a Grisham Ford rd, no Langley rd. I found Doc Eaton over a ways to the East, are there trout here?

Well I'll be darn, per google two cottonmouth were finally confirmed in the Spring River of SEK. That rivers starts over by Carthage and cuts through KS down to Oklahoma and Grand Lake. I've fished Spring River for years and even noodled cats down below the dam in Baxter Springs. Not sure I would have had any part of that had they been confirmed back then. LOL

I grew up not to awfully far away in extreme SE Kansas. We have many hundreds of strip pits and public grounds that I've fished, hunted and explored for years on end there. In all those years fishing down there not a single cottonmouth was ever seen or identified. Officially the state has yet to recognize they exist anywhere in KS. Curious what would make them thrive on Crane Creek but avoid areas not that far to the northwest? Copperhead and Rattlers are common most places these days but cottonmouths? I've never seen one live in KS or MO. Not saying they don't exist just haven't witnessed one personally. I hadn't considered the heat factor on this stream having mostly fished the state park spring waters here (though I've trout fished the Appalachian mountains of VA for native brookies). It's easy to forget how wild streams are / can be different and water temp becoming more of a factor. I'm likely go down to explore the stream some if not to fish a little, there are other options close by at RR if we decide to fish elsewhere.

I’m thinking about heading down to Crane Creek for a day fishing trip this weekend. I live up by KC and fish Bennett Spring mostly (which I enjoy a lot). Wanting to try my hand at these McCloud strain wild spawning rainbow trout. I’ve read a few posts and understand they are way more educated and spookier than your hatchery trout variety. I’m looking forward to the challenge! I seen a recommendation to park at the ball fields and walk the tracts down to the creek. Is this a good spot to fish this week? I’ve also seen upper and middle wire access points which I’ll check out when there. If you were going fishing this weekend, where would you fish this stream? Are the snakes, tics, chiggers unusually bad there now? Thanks for any tips you care to share. dan
