  1. Trust me on this one there were no holes in them, just a lot of big dead walleye.
  2. Yesterday's adventure with walleye showed me there are way more big walleye in the lakes than would be suspected.
  3. Wasn't the original.post about a big long ear sunfish? I admit I am a little concerned that the bluegill, long ears, greenies, and various others, and such are on the verge of being decimated, we should act immediately to protect those dwindling populations by instituting a 12 inch MLL on all such critters, and ban all spearfishing for bluegill, long ears, green sunfish and shad.

    What's Cooking?

Lunch today was a bit of a throwback to days of bachelor hood, deer camps, and gravel bars. Some leftover smoked beef roast (chopped up) a diced onion, a few boiled taters and plenty of seasoning. Formed into a sort of patty and put into a skillet with some garlic flavored olive oil. Got a decent crust on some of it, wife wouldn't let me finish it with a can of baked beans on top, had to have them separately. But was pretty tasty, seasonings the best I can recall were house seasoning (salt, pepper, garlic powder), cavenders and some brisket rub mix just because I happen to spot it while putting it all together.
  5. OK, the big ole long ear was cool, but that fly is awesome! Have no desire to fish with it but for decor it is beautiful.
  6. Not a whole lot but several of the spotty storms have gone right over my house. This half to an inch rains have done wonders for my crab grass crop. Prettiest green yard I have had in a long time. But almost zero run off anywhere around here. Aside from high water temps, and low DO, the warm stagnant lake waters are about perfect for an outbreak of red sore disease which hits all species. Have seen some years where it was bad., again not a thing that can be done about it.
  7. Well hell if I had to block people who annoy me, I would at times have to block myself. Besides those oddball posts don't bother me, usually they amuse me and sometime I get to have a little fun with them.
  8. Not much they can do about it either except possibly identify why. With what I saw yesterday I am thinking low dissolved oxygen. A couple that were semi fresh (still had color and some pink in their gills) were grabbed and put in the freezer for them to inspect.
  9. I am in agreement, thin down the sunfish population to make more room for carp, the baby carp will increase the number and growth rate of walleye and bass, because the studies show that baby carp are at least 112% pure protein, and are much preferred forage for every fish that swims.
  10. Rainfall yes, inflow no. Could be a number of things from low oxygen to a bacterial infection or parasite. Either way there is nothing that can be done really.
  11. There are some very nice walleye too. Haven't seen any muskie, but may not have been in the correct spot.

    What's Cooking?

Well I forgot my wife and daughter were headed to an all day concert in KS, (genius plant, all day concert, in KS in July but I digress), too many leftovers to smoke a couple roasts for just mom and i, so in order to maintain my man card I found a couple old cans of whop biscuits in the bottom of the fridge and thought I aint gonna fire up the oven and heat up the house, so why not try the grill. First batch was a true learning experience, way too much heat, burned to a crisp. Second attempt with only the off side lit, and no fire directly under is looking better. Remains to be seen how it turns out. Oh and am using a silicone sheet under them.

    What's Cooking?

Wow, even the fireworks are awesome. All I am doing is trying to rescue my strawberry patch from a weed invasion and grilling some dogs and brats. Maybe I will put a couple roasts into the smoker, don't want to loose my man card on the 4th of July. Back issues are plaguing me today, every thing may get are tylenol glaze!
  14. What are them little speckled fish. Built like they would be fun to catch.

    What's Cooking?

I mixed some burgers, 1 lb of pork sausage and 1.5 lbs of ground beef, mixed in an envelope of dry onion/mushroom soup mix, some soy sauce and some cavenders, then onto a hot grill. Wife was frying squash and green tomatoes with a beer batter. All was going well until the deluge hit, blowing rain clear up under the porch roof and onto the grill, got my cheese slices wet even, 2 of provolone and one of pepper jack. Ended up with 1.25 inches of rain and some tasty vittles. Mixed up a sauce for use on both the burgers and fried stuff, 50/50 home made bbq suce and ranch dressing, with a generous shake of slap ya momma. AND since I dribbled some on my shirt I can definitely say it was dirty T shirt approved.
  16. I prdicr a sudden "bloom" of them this month. Fortunately they don't usually survive the winter.

Chief, never in my life have I heard of that. Sounds interesting. I do love avacado and guacamole, can eat it like soup. PS good to see your name again!

    What's Cooking?

I have some lemonade/garlic chicken marinating for kids supper tonight. Will go into the crock pot with some mini sweet peppers, and later some chunked up squash, because this time of year you have to have squash with about every meal. No rain in spfld yet, except for a few sprinkles, hope garden at home is getting some.
  19. I have pasture with lots of milkweeds, I need some more Thornless blackberries and some raspberries now to add to my fruit and berry patch. Do have a few decent looking blackberries on the few vines I have, if they get a rain or two they will be delicious.
  20. That's always been a good spot for summer whites. I have waited to long trying to get caught up to go out with you, it turned into summer again!
  21. The tomatoes in my garden are not growing well. The squash, cukes and canteloupes are going great guns. Not sure if some this mis sing in the soul or I just didn't get them fertilized well enough. Maters in old flower bed and old frame are big, tall and lush. The ones in the cold frame, which is up against the d chicken house have a new development, my wife stepped into it to pull out some morning glories and fell into a hole. Apparently a groundhog has taken up residence inside the d chicken house and made an escape tunnel right between my mater plants. That is the 3rd one I know of, so now it's ON. am on grandpa duty in springdield so one of our main jobs today is to find a large live trap, target seems to have a decent choice so we will check them.in addition to Bass Pro. Then the trapping season begins. Maybe I will be able to post a "smoked groundhog" recipie soon.
  22. Not bad, I hear you on the rendering part, when it's hot out I look lie frosty the snowman in a boat I sweat so much. Gets me in trouble when working outside occasionally.
  23. I am that way with my electric smoker, if it ain't fool for of its at "me proof" I love fruit but there are some combinations I just don't like and spice/heat with sweet is one of them.
  24. Vernon, I made the fish burgers a couple times and they are dang good. Not a fan of spicy fruit things so I left it off. Also fish tacos are fabulous. If you can do a smoked pizza (never even thought of that) you can do the fish burgers.
  25. Nice wallys and a pig of a white. That jack really wanted the purple crank for sure.
