  1. It's got to be tough for fish to swallow any spiny finned fish backwards. I wonder if the thing was stuck.
  2. Great conversation. The gorilla in the room is globalization. History tells us isolationism doesn't work. As the world shrinks and all countries economies become interdependent can America avoid being drug down to the economic level of our competitors?

The blog report is great. September has to be the best month for good Smallie fishing and minimal people.

    Link?
  5. While I seldom fish there I couldn't agree more that it is a wonderful park and a great place for young people and folks with limited mobility to fish. It's also interesting to see the contrast between how a private park is managed compaired to the state managed parks. I realize that the fishery is maintained by the state as well as wildlife law enforcement but I don't think the enforcement officials spend as much time hiding in the bushes spying on folks like they do at the public parks.
  6. Belly flops? Chasing emerging insects, maybe caddis?
  7. Yep, we use to catch some fine smallies in the Allenton, Glenco area of Meramec. I'm fine with spots anywhere they haven't displaced Smallmouth. I don't think they deserve a bum rap anywhere else. Now that you have me thinking about it, this weekend would be a fine time to fish lower Meramec and put a few spots in the live well.

Sweet fish. 2 1/2" rain in leaky tent sounds a little rough but it looks like it didn't hurt the river at all.
  9. Hopefully there are no plans to "improve" the area. That usual means making it more accessible rather than true habitat improvements.
  10. Thanks for the link. I have only read bits and pieces, I'm looking forward to reading the entire journal.
  11. Nice fish. Looks like the river is getting the rise you were asking for.
  12. All this has nothing to do with the integrity of the game or the fans. It is a power play by the NFL to ensure dominance over the players union in future negotiations. The refs loose the fans loose but they really don't care, The only thing the NFL values is profits. The NFL won't cave no matter how bad it gets. Where does the NFL go from here? To the bank.
  13. Wally, I enjoy your reports. You have knowledge few possess. Keep em coming.
  14. In my experance the stream smallies should be in their usual summer pattern about 4 more weeks. Typically we'll have a cool rainy spell the later part of October that will trigger a change. The change will be more pronounced in the smaller streams, less so in the larger ones.

With the rainy forecast this may be the best fishing week of the year.

Gosh yes I'm jealous. Free time is so precious, especially weekdays. Good luck.
  17. That's a good point. A significant part of many streams water flow is through the gravel substrate.
  18. Pumpkin and Green Pumpkin seem to match the bottom on most streams I fish so any time i fish a weighted plastic bait those two colors are about all I need. For an unweighted bait it's pearl white. Pretty simple.
  19. Thanks, I needed some encouragement.
  20. The fence wil not degrade the stream. The cows are are the problem. Unfortunately there is no solution because land owners apparently have the right to degrade a public resource.
  21. Your experiences are pretty close to my first attempts on the white. My advice would be to keep it super simple: 1. Use only one fly, a # 10 olive bead head bugger. 2. Keep moving, do not cast to the same place twice unless you find fish. Make your cast, swing down stream, hesitate at the end of the swing, strip a couple of times, take two steps downstream and repeat. Like fish anywhere they will go through cycles of being active then less active through the day. During the cooler months (starting about now) mid to late afternoon is pretty reliable.
  22. I don't know if they'll ever be as common as crows around the ozarks but the last 5 years or so I see so many I hardly ever bother to point them out to whomever I'm fishing with. You know DDT may well be used again in the US if some mosquito born disease outbreak happens. I would guess it would limited and local.
  23. Pretty place and some great pictures. Enjoy it while you can. Feeder creeks are short lived things on new lakes. Soil erosion will soon fill it till it becomes an encroaching mud flat that will eventually fill the entire lake. Of course this the the case with all impoundment's.
  24. Oh lord please give me the strength to not respond to this post
  25. What about the fly made from the stuffing inside a life preserver? I think this was also a bssp special. K-Pock ?
