amazing picture...that is one animal I def want to see and get a pic of....always look for them but have never seen one. nothing against hunting but i can't understand why anyone would shoot something like that. not trying to judge.... thanks for posting....epic picture IMO

...very excited about the new park though...is this area somewhat close to black, MO?
-
I havn't been here in MO very long so I have no idea about camp zoe and the history behind this story. I certainly wish many of those bands still toured in this area though because there are some seriously talented musicians included in that group. Some of those groups set the bar for the genre they represent (Del McCoury, Los Lobos, Hot Tuna). The only thing that is a major dissapointment to me in regards to living here in the southern MO Ozarks is the lack of a live music scene. Many of those bands are smaller market draws and not well known in the mainstream music world but trust me, there is some serious talent on that list (greyboy allstars, Karl Denson Tiny Universe, Leftover Salmon) Garaj Mahal is beyond talented...Fareed Haque pretty much owned the school of music at northern Illinois university. Robert Walter (west coast guy...amazing amazing credentials...berkley school of music...played with several of the bands on that list at one time or another)

How Fast Will Coe Get The Facilities Open?
E Green replied to Woodland Artisan's topic in General Angling Discussion
mingo national wildlife refuge opened right away. No delay at all. -
i have been to otter slough in the past couple years and have been blown away by the amount of ducks, geese etc. This time though, I didn't see any. I did some very cool herons, egrets etc. i was hoping that was the MS green water snake. now I can check that one off the list...haha
-
I saw this snake basking in the light this past sunday at Otter Slough Conservation Area just south of Dexter in southeastern MO. I am pretty sure it is either a yellow-bellied water snake or a Mississippi Green Water Snake.

very cool...thanks for posting

man that is HUGE! well done I just visited SIU/Carbondale for the first time on tuesday night for the Widespread Panic concert at the Shryock Aud. That is a nice campus and a wonderful little venue. Lots of nice parks around Carbondale. I wanted to hit up Crab Orchard and another nat wildlife refuge bfore the show but they were closed due to the shutdown. anyways....cool little town and man that is an awesome bass

I saw two that were just like it at Sam A Baker State Park on the Shut In's Trail. Eastern Hognose for sure. Tough snake to handle...reminded me of the yellow bellied racer. The Hognose is an awesome creature. It is one of the coolest animal encounters I have had here in the Ozarks so far. coldwaterfishy. I'm not from MO and I never said I personally knew the herpetoligist that I reached out to for help. I never said this herpetologist was in or from MO either. I'm not sure why you are so offended but whatever. My family will say a prayer for you. cheers

i swear i have seen that same scene..on every ozark stream I have encountered...haha how on earth did you guys know that answer...impressive

cool info...you def know what you are talking about. anytime you feel like posting pics, please do take care

Is that species also a problem down in southern FL/Everglades like the Rock Python and Burmese (spelling?) Python are? that is a big snake....so thick.
-
that is awesome jerry 241...so glad to hear that. there is a good posibility that it was a black rat snake. IMO, they are great to have around your home because they will keep mice, mole and shrew populations in check. As well as other unwanted pests.

1 Cottonmouth 2 Mississippi Ringneck 3 Eastern Yellow Bellied Racer 4 Praire Ringneck 5 Eastern Coachwhip 6 Midland Brown Snake 7 Prairie Ringneck 8 Northern Water Snake 9 Black Rat Snake 10 Eastern Yellow Bellied Racer That is what I think they are anyways. I used the Amphibians and Reptiles of MO Guide by Tom Johnson and MO Dept of Conservation to ID everything I find so that is what I go by most of the time.

yep...thanks for all the help and input....fiun thread I found a "new" species yesterday in my driveway. The pics are on my wife's iphone though and I didn't get a chance to upload them yet but will soon. It was a small midland brown snake...very cool. small guy....anyways, thanks again.
-
sent the pic to several herpatoligists. One got back to me and said that it is an eastern hognose. Still waiting on the biologist at Mingo but he has helped me out before. that guy knows his stuff
-
that is pretty cool...i bet you see deer, turkeys and all kinds of coll wildlife on your porperty and farm all the time....
-
Yeah that is the first narrow mouth I have seen here so far. It was very cool. I hope i come across another one before it gets to cold here. crazy looking critter for sure In that last set of pics, the copperhead was rescued from a road incident and was being rehabilitated and will then be released or kept for educational purposes..that is what I was told anyways. That trout was caught at Taneycomo...first and so far only time I have fished for trout. I know it was small but I was thrilled to get one.

I know....it is a mystery for sure. maybe it was sick and not attacked by a predator and it had some type of mutation. maybe it was shedding....wish i knew...mystery continues! haha I am going hiking later and I am hoping to get some pics of ribon snakes, rough green snake and a diamondback watersnake.....maybe I will get lucky and find something that will help me ID this guy. I am in Butler County...almost on the border with Carter County near HGHWY 60..couple decent sized creeks here (cane and 10 mile) which are loaded with snakes....lots of forest, some swamp, two ponds.....just giving you guys an idea of the terrain I have around me and where I am in the state so maybe that will help us eliminate some species. that is why I didn't think it was a prairie Kingsnake because my MO Herp guide doesn't have them listed here. I appreciate the input from everyone...sorry the pic is terrible edit...this response was posted before I read your last response feathers and fins...I def have no idea...rookie herper here with no clue...haha
-
yeah those snakes are awesome...never would have thought about what you said might be the reason for lack of spots and color..thanks for the help. i have a few more I am not sure about...will post when I have time...thanks guys
-
thanks. I wish I had better pics....all 3 that you said are on my list of snakes I havn't seen yet. I have seen pics of the prairie kingsnake..those are very cool would love to see on in the wild. I find quite a few speckled kings here at my home, otter slough, mingo, sam baker and elephant rocks state park. that is probably the 4th most common snake I have seen here in MO behind #1 water moc's, #2 black ratsnake, #3 prairie ringneck or whatever it is I am asking abotu above...haha....

lee G. what about this one. I see these somewhat often and am pretty sure it is a prairie ringneck or MS ringneck snake but the lack of a colorful underside and no dots along the underbody had me baffled. Almost every other ringneck I have found has the coloration and spots. This one was solid black besides the obvious ring around the neck. Does anyone find both prairie and MS ringnecks where they live? Can you tell which one this is?
