  1. it wasn't dead but if you look at the upper right portion you can see something white and it looks like the skin was torn up or scarred. I have no idea....this one has had me puzzled since day 1. maybe it was tore up by a hawk or owll or something. wish i knew
  2. yep that is what I thought then and still think now...spent quite some time looking at pics in the MO herp/reptiles/amphib. guides and online photos from ozark snakes. nothing I have seen gives me 100%confirmation and I continue to think the timber rattler is my best guess. I never heard a rattle though, which I know is very common but it was also very hot that day and the pic was taken around 2:00 in the afternoon. Timber's are almost exclusively nocturnal in such conditions. Very odd timing and circumstances so i thought maybe it was some other speices that I havn't come across yet.... thanks for your time and opinon...
  3. Not positive about this one. I thought it was a timber rattler so I stayed quite still until it raced away. Unfortunately, I was never able to see any of the head or the tail which were both hidden under brush and a pile of leaves and weeds I had pulled when doing yardwork the night before. I had been standing in that spot for a few minutes watching pileated woodpeckers and a group of crowes going through a territorial dispute in a tree right in front of me which was very entertaining. Then I heard something which sounded like crunching leaves and brush by my feet so I looked down and saw what you see in the picture. I was only able to get that one terrible picture before it was gone.
  4. ouch....guess i will keep the shades on as much as possible when fishing regardless of sun etc.....thanks for the tip
  5. It is very unfortunate, sad and frustrating. I feel the same way when I find dead snakes who were obviously killed on purpose due to lack of education, understanding and fear.
  6. continued....the very last picture in this post is of a Cottonmouth that was way too close to me on the creek behind my home. I was wade fishing and this guy came out of some weeds about 3 feet to the right of me and it pretty much held her ground and even raised 2/3 of its body straight up out of the water. It was amazing and a bit scary at the same time. It had either a frog or a fish in its mouth so mabe that is why this one acted a bit more territorial and didn't race off like they always have done on every other encounter on this stream. I did the best I could, got a few terrible pics and then went the opposite way,,haha this was a perfect opportunity to get some great pics of a water moc in action, esp when it "stood up" in the water but it wasn't worth the risk....maybe I will get some better shots in a safer situation next time.
  7. beauty of the ozarks and wildlife continued...
  8. critters from the yard
  9. thanks for that info Al Agnew...that is cool to know. I have a complete MO herp guide from MO dept of Conservation but often I can't ID what I am holding/seeing.
  10. cool photos with the fog...thanks for posting
  11. awesome
  12. awesome fish! that first bluegill is huge! what kind of fish is that in the third picture? thanks for posting pics...very cool
  13. I appreciate art very much and would love to chek out that museum in Bentonville. Maybe I can plan several other stops along the way to make that drive more productive. I will see if I can find a small stream to do a little wade fishing for a couple hours in the morning then possibly hit a park for a short hike and try and get some nature pics. Maybe there is a good lunch spot I will pass going to or coming back from Bentonville. We are leaving for Branson on sat and staying at a golf resort (this is a trip for my in laws really, I don't golf myself and would much rather get a cabin off the beaten path for what that is worth...your mileage may vary....)anyways...place is called Point Royal I think. It looks like it is on Taneycomo, not table rock. I guess that changes my fishing aspirations and methods..haha regardless...can't wait for this trip! Maybe now I will catch my first trout! I am sure I will come back and post way too many pics in my ozarks images thread...haha have a great holiday weekend everyone...stay safe and tight lines! GO BUCEYES again, thanks for all the rec's...i plan on doing everything you guys said...
  14. amazing pictures....love them all but esp that last one.
  15. thanks for the info guys...looking forward to this trip
  16. HAHA i can also post my fishing techniques so others don't make the same mistakes....
  17. Hello. My wife and I are taking our children (1 and 3) and her perents to Branson for the first time in two weeks. We are staying for an entire week and considering I have never been, I started this thread hoping to obtain any advice or rec's that some of you locals and experts might like to share. What are some good places to eat? Are there nice state parks or conservation areas to visit within a 45ish minute drive? Can I take my kayak on that lake or is that a bad idea? I assume the town will be very crowded so is traffic an issue driving around? Should I get familiar with backroads to and from the tourist trap type stuff.... thanks for any info....
  18. cool video! I have never done anything like that but I would love to ona smaller scale. I am heading to Branson and staying at some resort right on table rock lake(first time in branson). I would love to make some type of line with about 10 hooks on it that I could take out on my kayak, drop it tie other end to something on shore and then check it in the AM or later in the evening. not sure where to begin but I am going to do some research and figure it out! will report back.....never caught any blues or flatheads before and would love to check that off my MO Ozark life bucketlist...haha
  19. more pictures.....10 mile creek, marc twain nat forest in butler county, sam a baker state park, mingo nat wildlife refuge, our yard, local ponds...
  20. oh yeah....i was nervous for sure...said to myself once i saw the black...please be a ratsnake, please be a ratsnake...haha
  21. yep. right on the lower portion of the body. Normally when I wade fish this stream, I wear patagonia waders and wading boots which are both somewhat thick for this very reason. This time though, I had swimming trunks and water socks/shoes and nothing else. figures...haha nothing happened though. it didn't even show the defensive/warning mouth opening posture until a minute or so passed and I had the camera out. It was very very docile....thank goodness...
  22. Such a cool and interesting snake. Water Moc's are simply fascinating IMO. We each went our seperate ways shortly after our photo op...haha
  23. i didn't realize there was a brick and mortar local as it relates to this website. I will be in Branson for the first time from sept 1st-8th. I will certainly swing by this business and grab a shirt and hopefully some local advice for our week stay. Do yo have any Ozarkangler stickers for sale? I would throw one on my kayak if so as well. nice design by the way...
