  1. Fisherman + lips moving = lie I can do simple math! I for one don't really care if it is an accurate number or not so I won't bother to decide. Jim had a great day, and that is good enough for me.
  2. Swepco is chock full of bass, but there are a lot of small fish. The last time I was there, I caught a number of 12" fish, but only 1 decent fish. I think they are just trying to thin the population of small bass. Thus the 1 over 18 rule.
  3. Excellent job Roland! Fantastic flies everyone! Man that Disco is one UGLY fly next to all those others!!
  4. Actually, Ryne had two really nice browns on, but they both broke him off. Easily 22+. Didn't see a great number, and the ones he caught were in deep pockets, but they were there.
  5. Now, this is what it is all about. Liv had her first visit to Dry Run today, and had a great time. At 4, she is just figuring out what fishing is all about, but I had her roll casting better than my wife. Actually, she caught two about like this. The second she caught all by herself. These two were approx 19" and very healthy. My son had a couple of much better fish on, but broke one off in the backing, and had one snapped off by another trout trying to take the fly. Perfect way to end the summer. School starts tomorrow!
  6. First of all, welcome Dutch! Your opinion is welcome regardless of it's popularity. I often feel that there are too many sub forums. I skip a great deal of them because they don't fall into my normal routine. As a result, I don't hear the good things going on in other places. So I miss a lot of opportunities. I like the site. The sub forums do make it very easy to find exactly what you are looking for. And, let us not forget that Lilleys Landing is on the upper Taneycomo, and is aimed directly at Trout fishing. Keep up the good work Phil.
  7. Are you talking about the banner at the top of the page? It really doesn't bother me, I just know it is there and ignore it. Am I missing something??
  8. The wife said I got mine this morning. Unfortunately, I will not be able to have a look until tomorrow. I am ready to go fish them though. jOrOb
  9. Here is a link: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/f...032403fotw.html There is a beadhead version as well. Just add a bead!
  10. Scuds and Midges are always very effective. Various San Juan Worms work well also. The hatches are not as prominent, except for Midges. The Wooley is a great all around streamer. I like to cast it and strip it with small strips and pauses. I also like to send it quartering down stream and let it drift until it is directly downstream, then strip it a little to make it rise. If I had to pick a few patterns to start, I would go with: Wilsons Trout Crack Zebra Midge (black, red, olive, brown) San Juan Worm (red, brown, wine) Wooley Bugger (Olive, Black, White, Purple) Of course if you come up to Taney, tan Scuds
  11. Well said Dano. I feel fine with whatever you think is right John.
  12. You got me there Dano! I don't carry the net because I don't have anyplace to put it.
  13. Lots of good points everyone. I see both sides to some extent. But, I have to believe that outlawing it will spiral. No, it isn't an issue on the White. Noone really shuffled on the White because it isn't productive. Fish don't congregate at your feet like they do on Taney. Also, I feel confident that I could get away with it on the White if I wanted, because the law doesn't prohibit me from walking around. Someone likened this to gun laws and I agree. It started as assault weapons. Most sportsmen didn't say much because they don't care about full auto weapons. Heck, there were sportsmen that helped pass that legislation. Then it became high capacity weapons and again sportsmen weren't worried. We only need one round to kill one deer right! Then the anti gunners went after our shotguns. Sportsmen drew the line. Shotguns were obviously not the problem, and many very dedicated sportsmen carried one that would be considered illegal. So now it is all gone. High capacity weapons are available again. Imported assault weapons are back on the US Market. So, where does this line get drawn? Do we outlaw wading over ankle deep? Can we outlaw dragging your feet? Perhaps the law should outlaw fishing within your arms reach. Wouldn't that make catch and release interesting. You cannot legislate common sense. I feel that if you try to legislate this, you will simply create a Brady Bill that will spiral until we end up doing away with it again and find ourselves back here. Prove that shuffling causes damage to the eco system. Then prove that wading alone doesn't cause the same damage. If you can do that, then you might have an arguement for the law. If not, then you just create an arguement for no wading. This isn't an issue on the White because noone cares enough to fight it. That won't be the case on Taney.
  14. Hey Don, If using a net makes me a Lesbian then I need a new net! Seriously, I never use a net. I have one, but I don't carry it with me. I just don't. I rarely pick a fish up, just slip the fly out. I do see Wayne's point though. It would help to land a fish more quickly to have a net. But then, what fun is it to land them quickly?
  15. A single format should prove no problem. Recover my files works great, but unfortunately often loses the directory structure. There is a company called Drivesavers that can retrieve your data even if the drive is defective, but at a price. The average price for a recovery is about $3000. Unfortunately, they don't always get the directory structure, so you are probably as well off now as you are going to get.
  16. I think everyone here has missed the boat. The best reason for using barbless hooks is so you can remove the "earring" that you have just created with a poor backcast.
  17. The problem here is that Internet explorer tries to be too helpful. If you see a picture that you like, you can simply right click it and set as wallpaper. This is easy, but if you change, the old pic goes away. IE stores your pic in a temporary folder, then assumes you are done with it and deletes it. To ensure that you never lose another one: Right click on the photo you want Select Save As Save the picture to your wallpapers folder (you can create a wallpapers folder on your C:\ so it is easy to find) Then go to your desktop right click select properties Select desktop tab Browse (there is a button) for your wallpaper (in your C:\wallpapers folder) Select the one you want Click OK This way, the pic will be there even if you change. I hope this helps
  18. I am not much of a dry fly guy, but I do enjoy a crackleback now and then. I do the best on a kind of primrose color or a rusty brown. I have also had success on a BWO Parachute. But I still prefer scraping the bottom or drifting a midge.
  19. I was thinking I saw a trout net with a rubberized net. It was pretty light too. This is the only one I could find: http://cgi.ebay.com/EGO-Small-Rubber-Landi...bayphotohosting But I was thinking I saw a more traditional landing net with a lightweight rubber basket. I will keep searching.
  20. While I don't know whether shuffling does greater damage than wading, I do know that in Arkansas we have a no chumming law. It is illegal to chum, which includes shuffling. I am told that the law was written to stop guides from creating a "corn hatch". The shuffling thing was simply an act of wording, not the spirit of the law. Shuffling probably does very little damage greater than wading in general. My opinion has always been that if we stop the shufflers, they will stop us from wading as well, and then no one will get to fish. What frustrates me is when you walk down to find them shoulder to shoulder from bank to bank (they were 5 wide last time) doing some kind of electric slide thing (that is line dancing soul style) back and forth. I think it is a given that when the water comes up, gravel washes down. That is why the gravel bars move.
  21. It looks alot like an adams. Why do you prefer Moose mane?
  22. Signs warn of rising water. Horns warn of rising water. So he should have realized about rising water. Yet Brian by your own post you indicate that you have seen 4 (at least) separate occasions where someone was trapped by rising water. The problem is in judgement. How many times have we been driven out of the water by a horn only to watch for an hour before realizing that no water was coming. Or had the water come up 2" then recede within minutes. I agree that the guy should have recognized the signs and not been in that situation. But his life was endangered by his failure, so I bet he doesn't make that mistake again. I don't think a ticket would drive home the point any better. I have read the signs numerous times, and I am aware of the danger. But when this thread started, I had to really think exactly where the signs were and what they said, because I haven't looked at them in a very long time. I realize that complacency might have put me (or any one of us) in the same situation as that guy. I learned from his mistake. I also learned from Brian's post. I probably would have broken the phone. BTW, what happens when you break the phone?
  23. While I agree that people who destroy our natural environment are selfish and should be banned, let us not forget that the earth belongs to all of us. Canoers, campers, swimmers, ect have just as much right to the waterways as fishermen. I applaud MO for their efforts in conservation and enforcement of the laws. I am glad that Arseholes that ruin the outdoor experience for others are being controlled. I am not, however, prepared to support legislation that bans or limits anyone who wants to enjoy outdoors.
  24. Disco Buggers are in the mail!
  25. "Disco Bugger" I wish I could take credit for this very simple and very effective pattern, but I didn't do it. Grif1950 from www.flyfishingarkansas.com came up with the material and the very simple and very effective pattern. Material List: Hook: #6-#10 Eagle Claw Aberdeen(#8-#12 Streamer) Weight: 15 turns of .20 lead wrap Thread: Danville Flymaster + Black Body: Bernat Disco Yarn (available at Wal Mart) Head: Thread The Disco Yarn is available in a number of very effective colors. I use the Olive, Black, and Purple, but there are several other colors available that might work well. Here is a comparison of the Aberdeen hook next to a standard Streamer hook. Aberdeens run about one size smaller, so you need to adjust. Also, the Aberdeen hook does not have a downturned eye. I like the Aberdeen because I can get a ton of them for $3, and they are available at Wal Mart. Place the hook in your vise and add 15 turns of lead wrap. I like to position the lead on the forward portion of the shank, but not all the way to the head. I like to finish just ahead of the lead. Start your thread forward and wrap back over the lead to just above the barb. Select a piece of material from the Skein. The pattern requires about 2 inches of material so if you take 3 inches you will have plenty to hold on to. The Disco Yarn has a distinct direction. You want the material swept back. It is much easier to palmer that way. Tie in the Disco yarn at the tie in point. I like to lay the butt up to the lead to make a more even body. Once your material is tied in and your butts are covered, move the tying thread forward to the finish point. Start to palmer the material forward in touching wraps, covering the entire hook shank. As you palmer this material forward, it gets pretty unruly. By stroking the material back after each wrap, you should be able to avoid most tangling. Continue to palmer forward until you reach a point about one hook eye width behind the hook eye. Tie off and snip out the excess material. Form a thread head and whip finish. You might need to "comb" the material some to clean it up. Coat the head with Sally Hansons Hard as Nails and you are done. One of my favorite features of this fly is that it actually gets more bushy after the first use.
