  1. I took the canoe out on Saturday up the white arm and got within 20 yards of a couple groups of honkers. If I didn't have all my duck gear packed up, cleaned, and organized I would be out there stacking some of those guys. Saw quite a few on the water around prairie creek sunday as well. Seems like they need some education F&F haha
  2. I met up with Jdoc on Sunday and we couldn't locate any crappie around Avoca but did manage some decent kentuckys. Enough to kick the skunk out of the boat. Jdelow, do you live down around fayetteville? I'm right there off Exit 62. If you want to meet up one of these next couple weeks when the whites start running I will show you some of the areas I fish.
  3. Those are some chunks! I was out with Jdoc on sunday and the one kentucky he pulled up right before dark had a nice healthy belly on it. I must have just missed you F&F. Even the smaller kentuckys were thick, nice to see those big water fish compared to the thin swimmers I'm used to catching up the white arm.
  4. No problem jdelow, i dont have any secret spots, at least for crappie haha. I caught 20 this evening all shorts again 10 fow around brush with minnows 4' under a bobber near a bluff. Just can't seem to find the fatties. That lake house sounds like a good spot for night fishing under lights. You ever give that a try in the summer?
  5. yep I did, surprised you weren't in the background of my photo. Pick me up the next time you see me haha I'll probably be walking those parts this sunday as well. Have any luck up there?
  6. I have waded upstream of the MDC access in Pineville and had good success there, couple 15"+ and one that topped 19". I haven't fished it since the fall so I don't what the water is like but at the time it was perfect for wading.
  7. jdelow, I've been catching the crappie from pretty much any spot you can walk to on the white arm south of 412 bridge. Twin Bridges, Blue Springs Rd, Beavorama, Habbertons. If you look on google earth you can find quite a few areas to walk in. Plug these coordinates in and it gives you a start at least, you can walk over a mile down the south shore and the fishing keeps getting better the further you go. 36° 8'32.59"N 94° 0'6.86"W. All the little access points around there get fished heavily so the further you are from where everyone parks the better.
  8. I usually use minnows but that day I was without them, I agree they usually bring more bites and better fish. And jdelow yes I was fishing from the bank. Jdoc send me a PM with your number if you decide to go. I am meeting with a guy about a boat motor earlier on Sunday so my duck killing / fish slaying machine may be here before I thought.
  9. Yeah 30, but this was the typical size. I don't know much about crappie but I thought is was strange that all of the fish were 8"-9". Maybe someone who has a bit more experience can chime in. Do the larger crappie hang out deeper or maybe they weren't as aggressive? I figured with the number of fish I caught one or two would at least make the table but no luck.
  10. Well I got out for a couple hours Sat and Sun and caught around 30 total. No keepers but it felt good to see a bobber bouncing. Fish were in about 10 FOW and I was using a black and chartreuse tube about 4' below a bobber around brush. Caught a couple suspended on a sunny cliff edge as well.
  11. Sounds good Doc, I have no preference on what we'd be fishing for, duck season is over so now I have too much time on my hands on the weekends. I was reading your signature, do you do aluminum welding? I am in the process of getting a mud boat built and would like some benches and/or decks built after I get the boat just to get a better feel of what sizes I need. The builder is from south of dallas so it would be a lot easier to have someone around here that can do that sort of thing instead of hauling it back and forth a few times.
  12. Any of you guys have any suggestions on some shoreline fishing for crappie? I am in between boats right now and have a bad itch to get out on the water. Or if some one needs some company I have a cooler capable of holding a fair share of beverages of your choice.
  13. Well I ended up going Friday night out near point 12 and finished the night with more empty cans than fish on the stringer but still managed a half dozen keeper crappie and some nice whites in the mix. Nothing too crazy but enough action to keep me awake. Anyone else having any luck? Might try again this friday but would like to try a different area. Any suggestions?
  14. Planning on doing a little night fishing this weekend around war eagle. Anyone out there doing any good? Haven't been to the lake in a couple weeks but I need some late night beer drinking and crappie catching.
  15. I'm planning on doing a little float this weekend and thought I'd pick your brain. I've rented from you guys before and loved the trip but I finally got a canoe of my own and was going to try it out this weekend. Is there any place you can put in near the dam in noel? The girlfriend and I were going to try and avoid the crowds but I am not familiar with that stretch down to Cowskin. Let me know if you have any information that might be helpful, THANKS!

    1. wacky worm

      wacky worm

hey you can run that stretch below the darn , you might want a trolling motor

the water is getting low, im sure its low down there also

call 417-223-2369 and leave name and number if you need anything in the future

      thanks

      russ

  16. Do you know if they allow overnight parking there? We are planning on camping on the river that evening somewhere between there and the cowskin access. Also do you know if that is a good float with the water level right now? Thanks for the help
  17. Wanting to float this weekend and try a different stretch anybody know of a good put in near the dam
  18. tsmith, I've used that setup quite a bit also with very good success. Flyrodman, I would recommend 3 rigs that I almost always seem to have success on. 1. split shot rigged mini lizard (watermelon red speck) dead drift through moving water 2. pumpkin tube jig. 2.5" size is perfect. work deep holes next to current 3. Rebel Pop'r, use early and late in the day for some killer topwater action. If you can't catch fish on the James with these let me know and I'll go with you and see what's going wrong. Tight lines
  19. if the rain holds off this weekend I will be making the voyage up that way. Fished Sunday at the public access in Pineville and caught around 20 in 2 hours. The two big ones got away but I know they were pushing 18".
  20. went last weekend and caught a handful of really nice whites. fish were very particular on what they wanted to eat, tried drop shotting and jigging minnows but the only way we got them to bite was no weight at all. once we figured that out it was action for about 2 hours straight. A lot of short crappie and small whites. couple cats mixed in along with these lunker whites. We were in about 20 ft clear sky night around 11pm.
  21. I carry two poles with me usually, one a small ultralight for small jigs, cranks etc with 6 lb line. Makes for casting those small lures a lot easier. and the other pole is a heavier spinning reel with 10 lb line. Probably a little overkill but you'll never lose a lure. I use that rod for heavier plastics and bigger lures. The james is dirty enough you don't have to worry about spooking them with the heavier line. I like having two different lures ready at all times and the varying line weights makes presenting a wide variety of lures a lot easier.
  22. what stretch did you run? we ran from pineville to the double bridge and caught around 60 for 3 of us but the size was a bit better. largest fish ran about 19 average was probably 15. Threw baby brush hogs and large black lizards.
  23. Well I picked up a light from academy and tried it myself. Caught 12 crappie and 10 of those went over 14 inches. Also had 3 four to five pound cats. Fished from about 11:00 till 3 so not crazy fast action but definitely enough to keep you awake. Had a at least 500 shad swarming the light but never saw the big fish. They were there but just out of sight I guess. I tried this on a dock so next time i'm doing a bluff
  24. What kind of light were you using? I've never tried it but I love catching some whites and this spring was a wash trying to get into them from the bank. I live in fayetteville and have been fishing some of the bluffs along the white arm but no luck lately. I may have to give it a try if you can lend a little advice
