When Fishing/hiking, Do You Carry A Handgun?
UnCivE replied to rfd515's topic in General Angling Discussion
I have considered carrying a number of times, but I'm not sure I've got the disposition to carry safely. When my temper gets tripped I tend to do things I might regret. I have carried in the past... hell I slept with a 9mm and an M4 for a year in Iraq, I am comfortable with weapons. However, there are some personal reasons I don't carry, but it suffices to say that it would be an unwanted distraction to me. Once my daughter is old enough to go with me, I may change my mind. -
Same experience as you, I usually fish the Roubidoux (wade) and hit the holes around that area in my kayak. It's mostly frog water, and I've never been super impressed with the fishing.

I haven't seen any useable boat ramps for some time now. Even with my kayak I think I spent as much time walking as paddling yesterday.

Been pretty doggone sick this week, haven't fished at all and been taking a bunch of medication. Anyway, took a look at the forecast tomorrow and saw thunderstorms in the mix. In my experience, I tend to have good days the day before a front rolls in. . . so I went out to a local spot that I haven't fished in a while. First off, the water is low. I actually had to drive quite a ways further down in the river bottom to get to the river. I fished a few holes on foot, and caught a few, and a large fellow with a penchant for tattoos walked my way with a couple kids in tow. He was a nice guy, but I had to smile a little when I overheard the last part of the conversation with his son " ... what are you doing? Pick that stuff up! Who do you figure is gonna pick this stuff up if you don't do it? This river don't look this nice cause people throw garbage in it." Wanted to shake that guys hand. Anyway, I got in the yak and floated a ways down and caught 4 15"+ fish in two hours, plus a ton of dinks. I got the feeling I could've really slayed em with a bit more time and energy, but it was HOT. Senko was productive , but a green river bug on a shakey head was slaying em today. Big guys sitting behind large structure or riffles in the slack water.

I usually pack a big water for one day trips (where I'm starting and stopping during the same light period) , longer than that, I generally throw a couple adult beverages and a giant sandwich in a cooler, plus a big water.

How long does the bullseye stick around?
-
I'd have to agree with Al... all the MDC accesses I know of say "closed at 10" and "No camping" , but I've never been kicked out night fishing.

Don't turn out no better than that. Hopefully the guy gets picked up and they're able to send him away for awhile.

First Kayak Recommendations?
UnCivE replied to flyrodman's topic in Lodging, Camping, Kayaking and Caoneing
If your budget has any room in it, the Wilderness Systems Ride 115 and 135 are both excellent fishing kayaks. -
First Kayak Recommendations?

I'm almost certain that ACK blems are 100 percent functional unless states otherwise. -

This is perfectly sound advice, and will likely save you some money. I paddle a Bass Pro Ascend kayak that's 12 ft, and they have similar models for under 500 that I can heartily recommend. I'd also recommend seeing if you can lift the thing by yourself before you go get it wet and try to carry it anywhere... speaking from experience of course.. As to your two choices there, I don't have any first hand experience in those models so I'll not be much help there, I'm afraid. -
Sorry to hear that buddy. Check your PM's.

I take my caving lights on larger lakes and on rivers I just take a small headlamp.

I've heard tale of a lake in north-eastern Missouri that has "Walleye, Crappie, and HUGE Smallmouth" , from a guy who I trust and says he's fished it. It's an old quarry that's filled with water, completely private and catch and release only (unless the owner tells you otherwise). My perfect lake is one only I can fish, and has tons of huge smallies, greenies, crappie and flatheads.

It's the Gasconade River and I put in at a public access... I don't see any legality problems there.... I went ahead and left a message with the DNR, I made it clear that I wasn't really sure the regulations, or that any had been broken, just recommended somebody stop out there and take a look.

Today I was fishing my local haunt, and noticed that there were obvious track marks in the river adjacent to some property that's been cleared (by bobcat). I say track marks as opposed to tire marks to make the point that I suspect they've been driving the bobcat in the river and moving gravel around. . . Now, they didn't really change the flow that much, and I doubt they've done any serious damage.. but I'm not a biologist. So, at what point do you decide to report something like that...? I noticed immediately because I fish there often, and it was obvious to me. To a first timer, or someone who isn't really familiar, I don't know if they'd notice the damage. I'm not the guy who is gonna grab a phone everytime I see a violation, but I don't hesitate to report poaching and serious violations.

Strange Sighting, Very Strange Indeed

Odd. -
I've fished tournaments into January here, but fishing is slow and being on a boat in the rain in january will take the fire out of any fisherman. I think it's more a matter of your comfort and ability to stay motivated in the winter than the fish not biting. I've caught some real nice ones in the winter, but you gotta fish SLOOOOW. Also, I'm a jerkbait fanatic once the water gets cold.

I almost always have a subpar day when I'm "showing" other people around.. it's gotta be part mental.

We Don't Have To Drag Our Kayaks Anymore...
UnCivE replied to yaknar's topic in General Angling Discussion
Probably drives like a boat with the alignment like that... -
This is a water report only, for the boaters. I didn't haul my rods today because I was with a non-fisherman. Anyway, drove up to Gravens to see how the water looked and low and behold, it's got 'No trespassing' stuff all over the place. I recall somebody mentioning that the place had sold, but I got the distinct feeling that the access is no longer an option. If anybody else knows an access around Gravens that a strict catch and release kayak fisherman could use, I'd genuinely appreciate the info. Anyway, I drove down to Adams and put in. Water is very low and VERY clear, well, where the vegetation hasn't grown over. We are due some higher water anyday now river gods... Paddled a couple miles downstream and a couple miles back up... there are no "split" channels in the river anymore, mostly just one channel has water in it, and it's usually got strainers. Took some creative kayaking to keep from getting pinned a couple times, and at the point we turned around, there was no way around the strainers without more creative maneuvering than I wanted to try at that current level. I think it goes without saying that jet boating is out of the question this far up river right now. Anyway, I'll try to put some fish in the boat for interrogation this week and I'll let you know how it goes.

You guys are fishin my home water, I'm happy to see you caught some fish on it. I'll PM you directions to the unofficial, official 133 access. Looks like you guys paddled quite a way up.

Banned From Springfield Area Lakes?
UnCivE replied to AmericanAngler's topic in General Angling Discussion
Defamation—also called calumny, vilification, traducement, slander (for transitory statements), and libel (for written, broadcast, or otherwise published words)—is the communication of a statement that makes a claim, expressly stated or implied to be factual, that may give an individual, business, product, group, government, or nation a negative image. This can be also any disparaging statement made by one person about another, which is communicated or published, whether true or false, depending on legal state. In Common Law it is usually a requirement that this claim be false and that the publication is communicated to someone other than the person defamed (the claimant).[1]
