Unfortunately, the algae is just something we have to live with. Your tippet may have been a bit too heavy. I usually can get away with 5x down here but recently have been going with 6x. Sounds to me like you were fishing the right flies, maybe just was your presentation. Today I fished a size 16 Pheasant Tail with an orange collar and caught quite a few. I also get frustrated with the fish down there, I can pick up a few with random dries but I usually get them on midge emerger style things.

That's sexy! Sorry, I kinda get excited when I see good looking flies. I would definately fish that.

Hey Al, why just during those certain times? I fish streamers all the time! If I can't catch crap on a nymph or dries I'll fish a streamer. I think we as fishermen are stuck to our normal times when we fish certain flies and only those flies. Streamers will catch fish with high sun and calm days. I know I'm guilty of it, but I'm trying to fish things outside the box. It's not always the fact that it's a streamer! It could just be the fact that ONE little detail is wrong. The gold bead could be putting them off. I know I was fishing streamers one day and I was catching quite a few fish on a rubber legged thing. Well, I ended up losing it. I had another fly that was close, but without the rubber legs. I only picked up two or three the rest of the day. Fish are crazy -

I like to fish them cross current too. Might be good to try different colors than you've tried previously. I also hear they're quite the stonefly nymph if you fish them under an indicator dead drifted. I don't fish them too much though. I usually fish a slumpbuster but buggers have done quite well in the past. -
I have a few nymphs that I tie with CDC. I agree that they create a cool effect but I'm not too sure if they catch more fish. I cut the fibers off the shaft, split my thread, throw the fibers in that and wrap it up like that. The picture here is a couple from Loren Williams.

I think my biggest issue right about now is that I can't decide what I want to tie tonight. I know I need to tie some caddis but I really need to fill in the gaps on my nymph box. Any suggestions?? -

Guys, can we at least pay a little attention to our grammar? I've seen the word "your" abused so much in this thread. -
A new fly tying tutorial once in a while! Maybe we could type the difficulty of the fly over on the side for beginners or something similar? I'd upload a thing or two.

Here you go Mitch, here's a really good viewpoint on this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0 Tell me what you think. And why would you come to a forum and attack the owner?? That's just pointless if you ask me. Not like you're going to do anything about it. If you don't like it here then why come back? -

Zach Bearden replied to Mitch f's topic in General Angling Discussion
So anyways, today I was fishing and couldn't catch what I was expecting numbers wise. I couldn't figure out what was going on. There were plenty of fish in the hole that I was fishing. I was fishing a no indicator upstream with small flies (18-20) for the heck of it. Well after LOTS of experimentation I finally caught a couple more fish. I switched over to a dry/dropper set up with the same small flies as before, but started catching more fish. Why? I don't know, maybe it was just that I wasn't detecting the strikes well without an indy style fly up top. It was some pretty slow frog water... So after realizing that my technique was a little off and switching it up caused me to catch me more fish I decided I'd play with the pattern. Now usually I'm a pretty straight forward guy when it comes down to patterns. I have about 6-7 in my box that I fish consistently and hardly go out of that group. But today those things just were not doing the trick. So I tied on a little experiment, a small beaded nymph with a CDL tail, Pheasant body, and a bit of dubbing for a collar. It was a fairly dark colored fly. After two casts, caught a fish. Let the hammering begin. I ended up catching 20 or so fish before I eventually lost this fly, which was completely demolished by the end of this, and I didn't have another like it. I switched to another fly and only caught one more fish before I eventually gave up and went home. So my questions for you guys, at what point do you think you're not catching as many fish as you think you should? What would you do to fix it? I'm also quite set on Technique > Pattern. But today just threw me for a loop. Makes you realize that you're not as complete as you thought. Silly trout P.S. This is a fishing forum, not a political forum. I'm sure there are plenty of places you can go here on the internet to rant about politics. I'm here to learn from other guys and hopefully I can teach something back. Can we go back to fishing now? -

By the way chambug, if you were trying to use binomial nomeclature you're technically supposed to capitalize the first letter of the genus of the animal along with italicize the whole thing. -

Are you sure he's talking about a rainbow trout? I thought it was a Trota Iridea for sure. -
When you go down and across you already have a lot of tension. So a fish hitting your fly then you suddenly setting the hook will break it every time. The fish hooks itself man, especially down/across. Try fishing upstream with the first 10ft of your line greased. Watch the tip and respond to anything different. I don't break fish off with this as often as down/across. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Dude, the Arkansas out by Leadville is some of my FAVORITE water I've ever fished. I've never fished the Cache la Poudre in Fort Collins but if you go there take lots of pictures and tell me how you liked it. I'll be there for the next four years

Just saying, the down and across swing doesn't effectively imitate crap. But it will indeed catch trout. I would try both, I have a floating and a type 3 rigged for fishing wets and streamers in big water. There are many variables in angling, depending on the water type, level, color and fish activity I could change my fly, tippet size, line type and fishing method 1800 different ways. Maybe you could tell us some more info on what was going on.

I couldn't tell you the last time I was fishing and saw my backing...

Oaf Winter Fly Swap
Zach Bearden replied to Outside Bend's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
Hook: Dry fly (thinner wire, penetrates a fish's mouth quicker) Bead: Silver to match hook size Tail: Pheasant Tail or Hackle Fibers. Hot spot: Orange thread (you can omit this if you'd like, I just really like hot spots lol) Rib: Green Wire Body: Pheasant Tail Collar: Some crazy spiky dubbing I list all my materials in the order that I put them on the hook. -

I'll also vouch for the TFO pro series. I have a 4wt that I fish my dries on. Casts good with a rio line. I use a Ross Flystart that was like 50$. I only have one complaint, I had it get a little sand in it and the drag locked up. Pulled the spool off, rinsed it out, and it worked just fine. -
Al, I love the way you describe this river! Sounds great. Keep it up, I'm dying for some wild trout and this is helpin out haha. Can't wait to see some pictures of this place. Those whitefish are awesome, seems like they're always willing to eat.

Funny story, caught a pair of undies on one of my sessions in Slovakia. Come to think of it, also caught a brown trout from the same hole, he sure didn't fight much...
