  1. Check ebay. Aftermarket companies are reproducing some of those obscure plastic doodads that are NLA from Merc, NLA Marine is one of them. There are some sellers with NOS stuff as well.
  2. Occasionally I would mark a fish separated just above the pile but for the most part they were down in it. If I run over the pile at idle speed first, I will get a better snap shot of the pile as a whole, and any fish that are on the fringes will show up better, as compared to just hovering over the top of the pile. That reminds me, next time I need to run over the pile with DI, as that is supposed to be much better for showing fish that are close to structure.
  3. I was out on Saturday from the dam down to State Park, whatever that big island is called between the main lake arms. In 2 hours I had 6 keeper crappie and a few shorts. I caught fish on just about every pile that I hit, but some were better than others. It was definitely a one here, one there type of afternoon. I was using a 1/16 oz jig and a blue ice baby shad. Almost all of them whacked it on a dead stick. No movement was best.
  4. I have a first Gen Terrova and the spot lock is about one step above useless IMO. Drifts about 20 feet before correcting, over shoots, wraps up the cables, you name it. The new ones are way better but it'd be nice if it didn't take a whole paycheck to buy one.

Crappie were finicky. Caught more on cranks at dusk than I did jigging brush. Found a couple 'eyes too. Water is cooling off fast, 60*.

    Torn

I can't help but wonder if those big time tournament guys actually enjoy fishing, or if it's just a job (albeit a good one). For me, the best way to ruin a hobby is to make a job out of it, the minute I have to do something, it becomes a chore. The money right now is in specialized trades, STEM applications (aside from teaching), and medical. College has become outrageously expensive, and unless you have a free ride from parents or a scholarship, stagnant wages and high living costs have made it next to impossible to recover from that debt burden, and most kids do not have the forethought to see the long term impact of borrowing that much money. College ain't the sure-fire path to a good life like everyone told me it was, and I got off easily as far as student loans go. The military is a good option as well. My younger brother has surpassed me in pretty much every way possible with the USAF, so there's that. Us young guys have it tough, being the first generation to have it worse than our predecessors. Make sure they choose wisely, times are hard and the future is uncertain.
  7. Yeah, still got a couple weeks to go yet. I was still showing a deep thermocline last weekend. Water was ~65 degrees.
  8. I have had more consistent luck with walleye from the dam down to Mutton and Sons creek on the big sac, although I have caught many on the little sac towards Masters and Cedar Ridge. I would consider staying at Hawker or State Park, those are pretty centrally located and you could run down either arm or up to the dam pretty easily. I have more luck with long, shallow, rocky points with wind blowing into them. But I ain't exactly loading the boat so take that for what it's worth.
  9. Found one tonight after a couple hours. Crappie were more cooperative.
  10. I had a lot of luck in October/November of 17 doing pretty much the same things I did in the summer. But this year, and last year, I haven't had much luck. I know a lot of guys catch them shallow on jerkbaits around this time. Something I hope to get better at. I usually have the best luck during summer, when the thermocline keeps them confined to the top half of the lake.
  11. Almost surely a black rat snake. Common around here, I see more of those than anything else. I read somewhere that they are evolving to not rattle when threatened, since it gives away their location and they're usually killed. The silent ones get passed on and reproduce. Scary.
  12. There are a couple Alumacrafts on CL that may interest you. I've seen the same thing. Jon boats, pontoons, and bass boats seem to be the majority around here. I've often thought of running up to Minnesota where aluminum V-hulls are pretty much all there is.
  13. Yeah, as mentioned, it will only show things like a total loss or major repair that was claimed by insurance. Some of the bigger marinas may report to them for smaller repairs, but I wouldn't count on it.
  14. You're sure right about that. Went over to Cedar Ridge this afternoon. Think I hit 5 or 6 brush piles and only caught two crappie on one of them. Found a few more on bridge columns, but not much for keepers. Kinda expected it to be tough with the sudden drop in temperature.
  15. As the water cools shad will move up into creek arms looking for warm water. Crappie will follow. Once the water dips below 60 they will start retreating to deeper water.

    Wind

Yeah, from Hawker up to the dam. It's wide open there with no wind breaks, especially if the wind is straight from the south. With a breeze like that it shouldn't be too bad. If gusting 30+ you should probably just stay on the little sac arm, it's a little more sheltered.
  17. Looks like a good trip. September's been a hot one but I'm glad it's over with. We got off pretty easy for most of the summer.
  18. After the shower I got on Friday, I've been thinking more and more about getting rid of this low-slung bass rig and getting something like an Alumacraft Competitor with a 50-60 horse tiller, like I wanted in the first place. I don't mind the side console, but with the low sides you get drenched in heavy chop or a cross wind. Heck my little 14' Alumacraft was a drier ride, if you could hang on. Problem is those tiller boats are a rarity around here. Go up north and that's all there is.
  19. I don't know much about bottom bouncing, but I do see them while pulling cranks. Very rarely am I not marking anything and still catching fish. Walleyes are usually elongated marks, within a couple feet of the bottom. Bass are more football shaped, same with crappie, although they are often suspended. It's worth noting that the apparent "length" of the fish is entirely dependent on the speed of the boat, and the activity of the fish. I'm usually rolling over at 2-3mph and get a pretty good snapshot of them in-situ.
  20. Seconded, where I got my Terrova. They're very fair.
  21. Went last night and had one short and one barely legal. Found a couple nice crappie on brush but I didn't spend much time trying to find them. JME but the walleye bite seems to slow down during a full moon. Should get better soon.
  22. Found them tonight as well. Pulled cranks around a long, shallow point in 15-18ft. Had one just over 22" a 20, a 17, and two that were just under 15. The wind seemed to pick up at dusk, and it was on like Donkey Kong. All pulling flickers and a wally diver. This was the only photo I took, had my hands full dealing with snags, tangles, and fish. Layed her down on the golden rule for a better pic, went to reach for my phone, and in one expert flop she went right over the gunnel. So that one got released.
  23. There an app called Onxhunt that may be helpful. Shows property lines and owners.
  24. I have seen it in some areas, but not in others. Where I have seen it, it was close to 30ft. I think the steady in/outflow has prevented it from forming.
  25. If you are trying to advertise your guide service on this site, it is working! 👍 Found a few as well tonight, 7 shorts and 2 keepers. All pulling rogues and flickers in 16-18 feet. Seems to me that the walleye bite really picks up in and around a new moon. Waa catching them every pass, with doubles a couple times until the sun set, then nada. This was the only pic I took.
