  1. I “assumed “ that’s all they ate?? Well I wouldn’t catch many fish then would I? As mentioned, I do very well fishing other patterns. Like the hare and copper or midges I mentioned.
  2. I don’t have issues with using my favorite imitative patterns. Mostly midges. Just like to give myself so sort of challenge sometimes. And keep things interesting. Catch a fish on _____ type of fly. Catch fish on size #20 and smaller. Test out new patterns. Thanks for input on scuds
  3. Well this post has most definitely gotten of subject. Never asked WHAT they eat. Only the size of the scuds
  4. Well this post has most definitely gotten of subject. Never asked WHAT they eat. Only the size of the scuds
  5. I had read somewhere the scud/ sows were majorly #16. I think this was a mistake and need to go to size #18. Caught “some” on trout crack #16. I’ll go smaller on these as well. I’ve been fishing there steadily the last few years. My in-laws bought a place there a few years ago. Before then, I fished there a few weekends out of the year for geez... 30 years now! I’m blessed to have a family stream with wild trout. I fish a mono rig the majority of the time nymphing. Only add an indicator to it when I want to just relax or wind picks up. Not bragging but I’m very good at nymphing. It’s my strong point I guess 😁. As for not fishing near bottom, I do pretty darn good there.
  6. I fish BSSP several weekends a month. I only fish flies that imitate natural food in the stream. No John Deer’s or white thread jigs lol. I have become a very proficient nympher. Many 30+ fish days. One thing I can’t figure out. If scuds are so prevalent in the stream why can’t I catch but the occasional fish on them? I’ve been told #16 olive or tan. I fish the stretch in zone 1 below the last handicap access down to about 50 yards of the darn 90% of the time. Is this a “scud free” zone lol? Could someone give a little insight on the size of scuds they do well with? To be fare, I’ll give a few tips. 1. Constantly change depth until you occasionally hang up adjust 3” at a time. 2. When possible don’t use large bright indicators. They see a lot of them I know. But seem to thing a small white indicator doesn’t alert them nearly as much. 3. A simple #14 natural hares ear and gold rib bead head “no tail” is TNT! At least 300 fish last year on that fly bounced on the bottom.
  7. Looks like him. What about Easter egg colors? I can find the recipe. I think I guessed the last time
  8. After ten years have finally burned through my egg supply. I don't remember the names of the colors for the original tri- color. Help is appreciated!
  9. I have a secret little trout stream that i fish with a 10' Greys Streamflex 4wt. I use small beadhead nymphs czech style. 10 foot leader, fly line never comes out of the tip. These are wild rainbows. Always catch ATLEAST 25 in about 3 hours. A setup like this is so much more versatile. But dont get me wrong.... Im a gear junkie!!!! Ive spent PLENTY of $$ on outfits i didnt really need LOL
  10. Drew03cmc, Im looking for 5'6. $20!?! WHAT?!?! Sounds like a winner!
  11. Agreed. 1/8 ounce I would throw on a spinner. But whipping out a small topwater around 1/4 ounce would be the bees knees!
  12. On the recent hair jig thread. Mitch f said he prefers baitcaster setups even down to 1/8 once. For those of you that through light lures on baitcasters. What is your set up? Rod, reel, line. I think I need one lol! I saw Bass Pro makes a Tourney Special casting rod that is 5'6 ML. But the St. Charles store did not have one to look at.
  13. Very easy to tye!! Ive been tying flies for 22 years. Since I was 13. I have ATLEAST $4K in materials! My tying room looks like Feather Craft in STL. Who needs that spare bedroom anyway ?. I have been picking your guys brains on what materials work best for smallmouth jigs. Thanks to all!
  14. What kind of wire do you use for the weed guard?
