  1. That seems strange with the number they gather from shocking every year. I would think they would run out of places to put them?
  2. I have 1 1/2" here and it appears there were no gully washers around here. I'm sure not a whole lot will even make it to the springs anytime soon as dry as its been. I'm with you JD, I know the new technology breeds larger warnings. When people depend on them as they do they have to broaden the area of alert. I like to watch the clouds and radar, but I don't discount the NWS either. You can get a sense of how much of a threat it is to your location using the three.
  3. I'm about an inch here. I don't want to get wet, but from my porch that is a real close guesstimate in my gauge.
  4. 1/2" here in northern Taney county.
  5. I think you will want to keep an eye out for runoff that goes under the straw. If you have something to impede it you should be good.
  6. O'boy I have a couple of tall trees right at the house, a chinquapin oak and a cedar, plus a couple of big red oaks about 75' SW of the house. All of them are hanging on to 6" of topsoil. In my immediate there are always a few big trees that come down when there is heavy rain with high winds.
  7. The ensemble model this morning has its path hitting the SW corner of MO. If that holds all of southern MO should get heavy rain. I hope it stays to the west so that the area above the KS/MO line gets a good share, they need it also.
  8. I think it would depend on the level. If it is reasonably level, I would seed it and make sure it is well covered with straw. I think your only problem would be runoff if the ground sloped. I have an area that I can't ever seem to get seeded. It's steep though and excess rain runs under the straw from above the area.
  9. You really can't expect an answer above speculation. No one is absolutely sure where the track will be at this point. Play safe and stay well so you can float another day. Stay home for this one. FYI there is a flood warning from the Springfield weather and it it saying that the Riverton area could be central to the heaviest rain.
  10. Ness don't you have to agree that given the economic base of the region that it might not be a good example? I'm not familiar with STL and its suburbs, but the cities that make up the Shawnee Mission area are upper middle class and and beyond and the cream of the western Missouri area.
  11. This morning they are saying it is in line to hammer this area hard. As always, time will tell.
  12. You have to think in terms of the whole process. Liability insurance can be very expensive, especially with the threat of some of the awards we see now. There is another phase that hasn't been addressed and that is the predicted doctor shortage. If you think about all the trips to the ER for aspirin by those on Medicaid, think what it will be when everyone can see a doctor for what ever tweaks their curiosity. Our healthcare didn't need a complete overhaul, it needed adjusting and that was something that should have fallen to a bipartisan committee. Instead we get something written by Harry Reid's aides.
  13. Some of this reminds me about my son and grandson going fishing many years ago. He launched the boat and intended to start fishing close to the ramp. as he puttered along my GS ask if there was suppose to be water in the back of the boat. Of course son said yes there was always some water back there. A little bit later my GS says it looks like a lot of water, but sons say "yes" sometimes there can be a lot. GS says like up on the floor? Son looks, remembers drain plug and manages to coax boat back to the ramp and get the plug in.
  14. I would be more inclined to think pig, but they generally leave tracks no matter how hard the ground is. They do have a habit of swalling everything they can get in their mouth.
  15. I remember that one. I lost a big walnut to it.
  16. This what we want if it holds. Most of the rain is normally on the NE quadrant. Junkman we are apparently on the same page.
  17. That's a fish you won't forget.
  18. The models now have the storm coming through western MO or eastern OK. They've been sliding west since yesterday and I hope they stay over here. The farmers are really hurting. We've gotten enough rain to keep the trees alive, but the pastures are dry.
  19. I think the most common stupid mistake has to be the drain plug not being put in. I know what you meant, but you're talking about stupid, dangerous boaters and I would hope there aren't any on this forum. The stupidest I heard of was about 10 years ago. A dad was driving a PWC with his 4 year old in lap. He cut in a couple of feet from the shoreline, hit a rock, he and his son were ejected and his 4 year old died from his injuries. He had a lot of water that wasn't dangerous and a rocky shoreline was a common feature on the lake.
  20. Do you think you'll get the same care? If you tell Jackson you'll only pay a pre-set price you'll get Coosa's instead of Rivieras, if they have to absorb some of the cost? Well for one who unfortunately has suddenly had to spend dome time in them, I don't want to go to one that looks like government housing, or one that doesn't have the machine that goes bing, this is the problem, or doesn't have insurance if someone really messes up, doesn't have people to specifically do all the government paper work, clean the floors, fix things and make sure everyone knows their job, especially the RN's. OK I'll give you etc.. It's no accident that liability insurance isn't free and that doctors cost sky rocketed when suing for every little thing became a popular lively hood for the industry. Insurance didn't even bother with office calls a few decades ago because the expense wasn't that high. When I took my kids to the doctor 40 years ago we paid out of pocket and we didn't have to take out a loan to do it. As far as your medicine Ness, the act didn't touch medicine, the pharmaceutical companies bought their way out, with the patients money of course.
  21. We can hope it keeps sliding west. Ike came in around Beaumont or Galveston, I believe, and we got winds and rain out of it in spades. We could use a drenching, but I know it won't soak in like a long term rain. Every little bit helps I suppose.
  22. Wow, I wouldn't have thought that! There was a long hole above Hull that was always close to 4' deep and it was a long one. Come on Isaac!
  23. I have to disagree with some of what you say, I believe new hospitals are a result of a growing population, more hospitalization and room for equipment, PET comes to mind, that save lives, but take up a lot of room. While what you say above is true, the drug companies got a bye in the act, malpractice awards weren't addressed (I'm sure it was impossible in a room dominated by lawyers) and I found the statement that the 500-700 billion run on Medicare was going to be offset by attacking Medicare fraud. So are we to believe that going after Medicare fraud is a new program? I thought we always had people addressing that problem? If it's any conciliation, they tore down the hospital I was born in, but I don't think it was because of me?
  24. The problem with much of Truman is the terrain. In many ares a 1 foot drop means the lake shore moves 30'! This makes it look lower than it actually is.
