  1. Works every time, throw money at something, problem solved. Who's going to have to buy these license, the once a year floater who wants to experience a public river? Are you going to charge more for non-residents? Why should the people pay for cleaning up trash on the rivers when they don't anywhere else? In Missouri a 1/8th cent tax pays for accesses. The fishing and hunting license aren't for law enforcement, but for management primarily and we all ready have an agency that is suppose to manage our natural resources. If they do parks, why not rivers? I have always felt, and still do that first you have to limit the number of floaters to something reasonable on some rivers. Second, whether it is game law violations or criminal activities on the waters nothing is going to change a lot with just a few LEO's, whereabouts known, enforcing laws. Other states use their recruits to overwhelm areas with patrol. Missouri could probably put to good use recruits and retired LEO's to swoop in and make life miserable for some unsuspecting souls bent on spoiling every ones float on busy weekends. It wouldn't take long until word got out. They do it at other times with DUI blockades and extra patrolman on holidays. The danger that is always present on public roads shouldn't be present on rivers with half naked people.
  2. It's amazing how fast a snake will disappear in a yard if they are just ignored.
  3. Shouldn't all rivers that don't have major dams on them be part of the wild and scenic system? It could even be amended to include rivers that have X miles of river above the lakes and a flow of X cfs.
  4. That was the last thing they reported Jerry. I also heard, can't remember where now, that he had heart problems and they think the snake bite complicated the situation.
  5. I doubt there is enough cold water to pull them up there.
  6. I suspect it's a matter of enforcement. The city could probably financially justify putting people at the ramps to write tickets, but that doesn't seem to be the cities focus. They could have paid for a couple of officers and made 65 safer during the construction, but they didn't and people drove 70 in the construction zones regularly. I think a better plan would be to allow all boats with a speed limit west of the RR bridge and allow nothing but electrics and paddles east.
  7. I believe sanitation stations at points of entry that visitors frequent would go farther.
  8. I'm sure you will come away with a wealth of knowledge to get you started.
  9. I would ask that my vehicle be kept overnight and wasn't moved to Lead Mine until Saturday
  10. They have been running the minimum of late and not many are fishing up there. I was there a few days ago catching a few perch on my flyrod and there were only 2 others fishing, no boats. There is still enough water to fish, but boats would have to be careful and stay to the east side. It would also be wise to know and follow the channel up there.
  11. I agree Al, but in some cases the outfitters do lose control and while they may not like it they become a big part of the problem. I know I beat a dead horse, but the DNR's job was to protect the natural resources, and they failed miserably. If you want the compare the MO DNR to prostitution, they not only sold those they're paid to protect into it, but they joined the pimps and collected some of the money. The outfitters are necessary to allow everyone to enjoy the rivers and the rivers need friends. What's lacking here is overall control to preserve the experience. The ones who come to party because they know there is no law enforcement and that the rivers are to crowded to police ruin it for those that come to float. An outfitter could turn down those he suspected were a problem, but they would just go somewhere else. As far as the rivers still being here, that's not the way I see it. If the rivers continue at the pace they have in my lifetime they won't be worth fishing in less than a 100 years. You can throw all the arguments you want at that statement, but that's coming from my own experience and I can't change what I have observed.
  12. As far as rough fish go, they were here before you and most people I know aren't to crazy about having the smell of rotting fish where they want to relax.
  13. ??? You realize that a good cattle market is bad news for consumers, right? At ant rate that's now, if in the future they sell off because they can't feed them the bottom line will be an eventually shortage and higher prices. It won't just be cattle either. One could look at that as a good thing, more vegetarians, but then the flora side isn't in any shape too handle a run on it either. A lot was done after the dust bowl days to prevent a recurrence, but it was caused by a drought and there is no guarantee that farmers will fare any better today. I'm afraid we are just getting started.
  14. I caught my only mean mouth out of Bryant, a little above Cook.
  15. I fished for awhile down there today. It's not as low as I expected, but even though I fish there often J have a hard time related lake level to the Pothole. It is deep enough to expect fish to be up there..
  16. It is long, you literally have to go back to the outskirts of Lebanon.
  17. It was a amateur wiring job, which was the only thing it could have been. The dock had a pump and a lift so the only mystery was which one went to ground. Its sad because it was 100% preventable and not an accident.
  18. I think I would go Joe, just take the normal precautions and stay clear of cottonwoods if there's lightening and if you camp, camp high.
  19. Bull Creek's historical low was 4.5, it's now 1.2, Beaver creek, was 35, now 24, Kings, 17, now 5.9, Flat, 70, now 23. Bad news. I suspect a lot of prices for food will skyrocket. If they have to start killing livestock it will be a serious economic hit.
  20. There's money available, there's money available that hasn't been ask for. There was a discussion on another forum about 100K+ grant to Lebanon to promote tourism. The idea is ridiculous and clearly points out the fact the government waste money that could and should be used for better things. Everything worth stopping for in Lebanon is private enterprise and well promoted. Then river lovers who want them usable by all should try that approach first. The problem is we all know that if we yell loud enough, they will add another tax and not redirect moneys they have.
  21. Yup, before current has chance to touch the dock. The cables aren't a worry in the water because the lake will absorb any leakage, or throw a breaker, but eventually the leave the water and any leak there can energize the dock and that leakage will take the first path to ground it's offered. Every state, county and municipality is different, but in Missouri there is no standard. While some things should be left to locals, I'm a fan of that concept, but building standards aren't within the average persons skills. It's one thing for an official to know you need tornado warnings, but finding one that understands the NEC code ain't gonna happen.
  22. Very nice.
  23. We have to stop taxing at some point and make better use of what the people can afford. If we need more law enforcement then we might need to fore go some other convenience. Whether you like people saying that the government waste money or not Al, they do and people are going to be skeptical of one more tax. 100% is finite.
  24. Not odd, but predictable in areas without strict code compliance. Electrocution from any source over water is easily prevented.
