Shaky-Head Fishing For Lake Of The Ozarks Crappie
Old plug replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Lake of the Ozarks
There was some big bass in that ted shanks. I had a friend went to work for the conservation department up there. He caught several. He is the guy that caught that 9 lb bass in that lilly infested bay right above clarksville dam -
If that lake froze thick up there it could threaten you dock if the wind is right in a breakup. Your pretty exposed. How many stalls in there. If you have never witnessed a breakup it is really something to see. We had ice about 8 or 9 yrs ago that was about 8 inches thick. When it stated to break up pieces came down the cove at least a acre in size. When the wind is blowing about 15 mph they can get up a pretty god head of steam. I watch them blow out of the cove and across the lake. They would collide with that back over there and it looked dynamite going off pieces of ice going 15 ft into the air. One big flow came down and ripped my neighbors dock loose and pushed it over by mine. Another time the flow was attacking mine and being younger and more daring I took a ice copper down there and tried to ward the ice off by chopping the ice pressing and creating a cushion. That dock was bucking so much it about through me in the lake. In hind site had I gone in I am certain it would have crushed me.

Shaky-Head Fishing For Lake Of The Ozarks Crappie

WHARFRAT_____ go try that rogue are whatever you use. Also those big bass grubs. I the largest crappie i ever seen caught in this lake was by my son up at themouth of Little Indian creek on Chompers Grub. I said to him boy that thing is a one in a life time and he thru it back. I was going to have that one mounted for him. I did not even get a chance to measure it he just turned it loose. Myself as far as real big crappie go i do not think LOZ measures up that well. I think maybe the best crappie fishing in the state occurs below Clarksville dam on the Mississippi. Saverton dam is also pretty good. I imagine you got some of that fishing as a boy didn't you wrench. -
They did it about 15 yrs ago.

Shaky-Head Fishing For Lake Of The Ozarks Crappie

I bit bigger than 14. Now iam. Not sure anymore.i rarely take pictures without a roler in back of them. I am almost sure the black was over 17 inches. -
No ice in the lower graviois. I sure dread it if it comes. I have a good deicer but my bank faces westerly iat the mouth of one of the largest coves on the gravois. When the ice breaks up it is usually during warm periods with strong winds from the south west. That results in some terrible damage in this cove. Great big massive chunks of ice get to moving and collide with docks and rip them right off there moorings bending and twisting walkways plus anything else in there path.

Paint color eyes all means very little in relationship to technique. I am going to try the Nutech but if i order them later I do not want any painted heads or skirts. My plan it to use them on thing like paddle tail worms. And some large plastic creature baits.

Shaky-Head Fishing For Lake Of The Ozarks Crappie

I do not like writers to attempt to push products under the guise of being helpful. I will say this if you really want o catch big crappie use big baits. And i agree one of the best ways is a suspending jerk bait. These two in the picture came on two cast.off a bluff point. The water was about 60 ft deep where they hit the lure at about 4 ft. They were wintering and came up to to maybe suck up some sun -
Maybe it is a hybrid. I have seen some what i thought were largemouth Kentucky hybrids.

I think Al is right i think the injun is playing with the sunlight.

Length Of Day Versus Water Temperature
Old plug replied to Old plug's topic in General Angling Discussion
I think thats as close as you can get. To it AL -
Well creek chub went into business in 1910. I just looked it up. Going to. Be hard to beat that. They still make it the same as then.
-
I do not any longer fish in the winter. It is just to cold for my old bones. I use the Stic O worms they sell at pro bass up until I stop around November. And I use them sometime in early spring like you would a fluke. I hook them through the head a let them sink. And twitch them. They have a lot of action but its more in one place where a fluke kin of has a mind of its own but i still use flutes then also. I know that worms will work in the winter but its best go take the size down to 6 inches and put it on a jig head and around here bounce it off deep ledges. i also like paddle worms on jig heads.

Length Of Day Versus Water Temperature
Old plug replied to Old plug's topic in General Angling Discussion
The reason i am doing this is to see what everyone thinks. i think length of day sets a time clock. That might conflict with water Temperature. And make a litle difference at change of season. The reason i brought it up wrench os i went down to run my motor today. After I stared the motor igot a crappie outfit out and dropped a jog into about 15 ft of water. Right away I had a very nice keeper. In a few minutes in caught 7 crappie on 10 cast 6 of them being real good keepers. The colors were still bright and they were not loggy. Usually after we get some really cold weather at the end of december they move down to the point and suspend way deep. What I believe is they are still here because of the length of day. I bet if this warmer weather hangs on another two week they will be gone and suspended regardless. But then again they are crappie who knows for sure. To me the water temp say suspended but the time is not right. -
Shaky-Head Fishing For Lake Of The Ozarks Crappie
Old plug replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Lake of the Ozarks
That post was by a writer for lake of the Ozark's. He is just repeating what he is told. I would imagine a shaky lure might work sometimes but it is only one thing and one presentation. You could put a trout worm or Some other small colorful tidbit on a 1/16 or 1/32 jig and do just well. You want to catch crappie in the winter one of the best ways I know is tipping the jig with crappie candy. I just posted about fishing my dock this afternoon. I was dropping a tube tipped with a piece of crappie candy. I went down about 15 ft then i started a slow retrieve. I would raise the jig a couple inches then let it set a few seconds then repeat it over and over. Sometimes i will move it less than that much and let it set longer. -
I will go with small mouth also. I am looking at the dorsal you cannot bet on color its not a constant.
-
I will stick my neck out on this only because as far back as i can remember they were around and they still are made the same. Icaugt my first bass on one soooo CREEK CHUB PIKIE. Made by that company i think.
-
Here is something that should stir some discussion. What do the length of day and water temperature each have on fish behavior.
-
I went down on the dock to run my motor. 10 try's 7 fish 6 real nice keepers all black crappie. This is unusual for my dock. Mostly they leave after the first real cold and move down the bank about 300 ft and go suspend off the point. This is just another thing that shows me how much the length of day influences fish habit. The real cold hit hit early and that was a bit before the shortest days period. By the same token I have seen them go down there when the water temperature was higher than normal because of the shortest days.

MiTCH---- only thing I ever used in the way of braid was fire line on crappie outfits. I only done thst because i could cast it out a bit over a target feed it line and the jig would drop straight down on target. Because the line floated so high. I could see a strike as the line fed out on the water. Everything else is PBS bulk stuff. What I was describing to BO was I get the rod pointed to high and close to my body then there is no room for a hook set. It aggravates me more to do that than loose a fish. You may not understand this but at my age the catching Is not as important as the just fishing. I do use different things like jigs and other baits a little. But I am about the most pure plastic worm fishermen you will ever know. I think at the moment there are about 250 large worms in my locker all in shades of brown. Then there are about a. 200 others from trick worms to a unopened bag of flip tail worms bought in the 60s at Grandpa Pigeons. They had a price on them a bag of 25 that i could not read clearly anymore. Was 4 something for a bag of 25. I talked to Bo about his jigs.he is sending me one.
-
Yeah I noticed that. HEY I got a whole bag of original flip tail worms must be close to 40 yrs old.
-
I found the last one on the internet. i believe it was made by some company called True Temper and is called Crippled Shad. Just google that and you should be able to find it.

Dennis------ like i said i was going to ask a collector. It might bring $2 at the most. Most collectors want them that have a good finish and include the box it came in. Then there might be more money involved. But maybe on E Bay you can catch a human fish on it. There a lot of them around that bite on plugs old or new.
