Having Trouble With Troller Fishermen
Old plug replied to Old plug's topic in General Angling Discussion
I did not cut accross anyone's lines i was there before either if these guys were. They seemed to object to me occpying a 100 ft circle. I have never had troyble with trollers before. Myself i do not care what trolling tactics work are anything else i just know what happens on this point i been looking at for 25 yrs when i drink my morning coffee. Fins you might catch a fish in shallow water with planer boards. But directly in back of the boat 75 ft is not going to get you many on this point. I did not say i did not troll. I have not trolled in a long time. I have 2 qualty down riggers. As far as cutting in front of me I could care less. I usually am not fishing a bank I am fishing a short area along that bank. The thing is nobidy owns the lake. I was kind of shocked this guy telling me to stay out of the path of his trolling thst must have been well over. 200 yards long back and forth. -
I personally know some of the central pro am boys and freinds or not they will not be getting anything from me.

Having Trouble With Troller Fishermen

JOHN--- i would not go to that extreme. Your liable for damage and you could be arrested for it. Here on LOZ. A lot of trollers are summer people. They do not do well as fisherman and trolling makes it easy and they can visit and socialize at the same time. I really imagine it is a fun thing to do. But in both cases i was already parked in spot. If i have trouble with them that becomes verbal i am going to tell them to call the boat patrol and uf they do not shut up i will do it for them. That one guy that told me to leave had a. 275 hp Merk on that pontoon and a very expensive graft. He was really into his graft. Watching it like a hark. Geezzzz. In 8 ft of water full of shad i bet he was so confused. I am-going over there again this evening. Being Friday evening it should be interesting. -
Having Trouble With Troller Fishermen

I never had trouble before. I can cast in a different direction. To avoid a line tangle. The flat is not hat wide but it is long. Nether of them were were near the area i came into when I did. It does not bother me he can troll right by me. I can visualize his lines and where they are. But telling me to leave. Forget it. I think it just pisses them off to see someone pulling fish out around them. Like i said before trolling a shallow flat about 8 ft deep IS NOT a productive way to catch white bass. If you want a real productive way to catch white bass trolling i would suggest you buy a big black jitterbug. Tie about 2 ft of line to it and put a jug or two in there and troll dead channel over schools. But in 8 ft of water they do not care for a gas engine exhaust popping and vibrating in their faces. It will usually drive them out of the area. -
This season is the first time in all my years I have had trouble with trolling fishermen. For some reason there seems to be a couple trolling this flat across from me me that they have the right to troll and you are not suppose to come in to the the area they are tracking through and start casting. The other evening some fool told me to leave the area because they were trolling back and forth over a spot about 200 yards long. Then tonight i pulled into a spot and these people come by me not 10 ft from the boat glaring at me. They went down aways and turned and were coming back up and i hooked and landed a 15 in white bass right in front of them. He looks over at me and glares like I stole his fish. Let me explain something. Trolling is NOT the best way to catch white bass on shallow flats. You are running a motor through the fish schools and limiting the water you are fishing. With a small tail spinner on a light long spinning rod I can cast 50 ft and cover a area of 100 ft in Dia. I am covering more water and causing less disturbance. If they object to me catching more fish than they are to bad. I just got a better way.

I have tried them and do not care for them. I understand though that there is a way to clean them that takes away the strong taste.

I have never sen a buffalo pick up a lure. In a way i am very thankful we have a large population of drum here on LOZ they consume large quantifies of zebra mussels the conservation people tell me.the thing with the jigging spoon I Posted is because like catfish they follow the whites and pick up dead shad floating to bottom after the whites go through their slashing party.

I have caught a ton of them jigging a spoon for white bass. They are something like catfish in that way. They clean up after the white bass feed

i agree with Al about the protective eye glasses. I am pretty good at ducking though Al. If you read that short story i posted called What will St peter say to me you will see i have a bit of experience at both ducking and removing hooks. Next time i get stuck ( hopefully never) I will try that. But it does seem like it is going to be awkward as I fish alone much of my time. -
Light Wire Vs Heavy Wire Hooks....
Old plug replied to Mitch f's topic in General Angling Discussion
I have had a couple hooks break on me. I think i cracked them trying to make a wider gap in them something like the example Mitch gave and they were tempered a bit to much for that and they broke off in the fishes mouth. They were gold hooks on crappie jigs. I have noticed that different brands of that type are not always as soft as one another. If I recall I bought them at wally world. -

I do not know what the rope trick is and and the hook i had was buried in there was one of those big 05 hooks they put on the old bass buster single spins and it was in there to the bend. In any event we got it out. Al went and looked at a demonstration on U tube. I still wonder how easy it would have been with a 3/4 oz lead head on there, a thick single spin wire, a large colorado blade and a rubber skirt. I was just real lucky on the angle it hit. Lot of small bones etc in that area. -

I have been hooked up 3 time and all three times it was from someone else. Worst one was when a bass tournament partner yanked a heavy 3/4 oz single in off a tree branch and this big thick nickel finish hook stuck into the inside of my wrist. It was hard to push through. Then after that we never like to got the end clipped off. All you could do was dent the darn hook. We did that several times then got another set of pliers on there an was able to break the hook. Very little pain to speak of. But it bleed a little through the hanky I wrapped it up in the rest if the day. -
Light Wire Vs Heavy Wire Hooks....
Old plug replied to Mitch f's topic in General Angling Discussion
Well i suppose i am a bit to old to worry about the various technical points of a hooks i just look at the size its sizes and shape fir the intended application plus its cost are the main things. Only thing i do not like to see on a hook are large barbs. -
I am guessing you were way up by truman dam. I have a lot of concern about the white bass fishing here on LOZ In some areas like the gravois there there hs been a steady decline. I amalmost certain in some ways it is connected to large boats.

jerry you need to read up on FDIC. You will find it is not a government office. They are linited in the case of a great depression you might only get back a small portion of your savings.
-
You know when i mentioned that about the country could have a revolution. That is the first time i ever discussed it in a public forum and I am sorry I did. I am amazed that were so much closer than I even thought we were.

The white bass on LOZ tend to stay out in the channel. They used to rise and chase shad out in that area it used to be exciting to chase the jumps. That only happens rarely anymore. I think large boats are forcing. them to change habit and feed deeper. I have always fished for the most part with spoons. I catch both whites and hybreds. 25 ft. I used to love to do that. You never know whst your going to find down there. For anyone who trolls. There most effective way to troll around here for whites this time of the year was to tie a jitterbug on your line and then abiut 3 ft of leader to the back hook with a small jig on it. I never did it but it used to catch a lot of white bass for the trollers.
-
The big bass are not hard to find but it is hard to make them hit. I am sure its got a lot to do with the total abundance of shad right now. In order to get them on lures you got to play to there emotions. Its been that way all year

I do not know about the windy point stuff. I look for large points That stick out like bars in my area of the lake. Wind are no wind if they are using it they will be there. One thing about those places is if they produce they may do it for many years in a row and become spots that are a tradition with local trollers every fall. I have one very close to my house. Spent the last two evenings over there with limited success. White bass fishing in my area has been the pits for about 3-4 yrs now. It used to be a sure thing. Something has changed and it sort of worries me. I know last evening I caught 6 whites and they were scattered all over the point. The impression I got was the school was very small and stre ched out .

Depends on the weather. They are starting to go into seasonal change . They are more or less where you find them. Water was in the high 70's yesterday.

I certainly do not want to see it AL but I can see no way to alter what we are doing to ourselves. I have always enjoyed history and what is happening here in this country has been repeated Time and again through history.I and my neighbor friend discuss this stuff a lot. He is a political opposite of me. In spite of this we can get along very well. We might have a hard discussion about something but it always end with a good note of humor about the futility of the whole darn foolish situation. I am just waiting AL for some strong firebrand leader to raise up.This person. Is going to be another John L Lewis or Martin Luther King. He is going to unite all the have nots regardless of race, religion or what have you. Just the same as Lewis and KIng did. I hope that when it happens the changes can be as peaceful as possible. I do not believe most have nots hold it against wealthy people for having money. What they do hate though is cheating others to get that money. A lot of have not peole do not want to run in the upper crust. I am that way. I am happy where I am. Money will not buy that.

You might all think i am crazy but there is going to be a class war in this country. You can bet your life on it.

I got a suggestion wbout the shurts. I sm one if thise people that cannot wear cotton when it is hot. I can turn a cotton T shirt into a wet rag in a very short whie andcsmell like a hog farm. for thst reason these nylon fishing shirts have been a real blessing to me. I just about kive in them in the hottest months. Maybe that mught be something fir you to think about offering. I am sure there are many that have the same problem as i do.
-
Well i do not worry for myself I worry for my Kids and Grandkids. I am getting close to the end if it.
-
I second that. I do not think politicians ever study history. Governments come and governments go usually with a lot of bloodshed. And that is the way we are headed. My daughter did take a job right in i think it is a 4 month or something stint as a consultant. They paid a hell lot if money for it. Myself I do wish they had went aboard. It would have been tough on my wide and I but iwoukd rather see her there than here.
