I did not know this forum was here. Im a local chef and i have to say i know some really good chefs and have some really good recipes but there is a lot to be learned from this forum! Great food guys and i look forward to sharing and recieving some good food ideas. Ps the stuffed morels i like with the same set up as rps but i use some local goat cheese and honey and slivered toasted almonds.

Morels May Become Extinct One Day!

Ive read alot about that as well. I hope thats not the case. At least they grow around many other trees too plus if they just cut down or kill the ash tree and leave the root i would think they would keeping growing see as how they really like dying elms and other dead trees. Whatever the case the ash borer still poses a large problem for a very significant and beautiful tree! -
Anytime my friend...glad i could help. I hate that tranthem closed i had been going there over 25years. After he himself passed away it wasnt the same. Lots of good memories from that place!

Fishing
wuteversbitin424 replied to Aggressor1988long's topic in Fellows Lake, Springfield Lake, McDaniels Lake
Ive been wondering about fellows. Its been quiet so i figured the fishing has been decent. No one talks much when fellows gets hot lol. Good luck agressor! A week or two and the plate size gills oughta be in the weeds if they arent already -
Moores market on north glenstone just north of I-44 on the east side and fellows lake marina. Im not sure who supplies them now though cause they bought from tranthems.

I just keep the ones left over in my large cooler and as long as theyre minnows and not shinners they will live quite a while. I change the water ever so often. But i dont keep hundreds at a time, just a few dozen at most. They are pretty tough and as long as the water doesnt get too hot they will be good. I do the same with leeches also..which by the way lakeys now sells mud and fresh water leeches by the dz and lb. Great for cats cause ive caught a few on the same leech before. I use them if im not using shinners. Good luck

I catch quite a few trolling flickr shads in 20 - 35 fow across points and down the shorline. Agressor nailed it too...troling before sunset and after is very affective

Sorry to hear about the no go on the cats. It is a bit earlier than i normaly fish ruark for cats plus this cool spell isnt helping. As far as drifting flats in that area i have never done well. I start around now at aldrich and fish riprap there until mid june then i start fishing h hwy bridge until about the 4th or so and then move back to aldrich on the flats. Hope your luck turnes around though! Good luck and be safe this weekend
-
Depends on what size. I catch all i can use straight across from the ramp or on the flats north around the bend but theyre the little 2-4 in shiners
-
Crawlers work great too...i just like the shiners cause i dont have to buy them...although after the rain i could probably catch some crawelers too. 5Bites- I hadnt either until quite a few years ago a buddy of mine showed me how to fish them around the riprap at ruark. Thats the only time i use a cork but it is extremely effective when the time is right. When i drift i just use a splitshot or two.

Although i have not hunted anything other than morels up untill this year i have been doing a lot of researching and scouting for new areas and specimens to find. It looks as if the next round of edibles the chantrelles should do well on account of the prolonged rains forcasted for the coming weeks. With that said what do all of you more seasoned chant. hunters think about when and how well they will show up?
-
I work all weekend but am off by 2pm. I might get around up there sat night for a while. Will let you know if i go.
-
There shouldnt be much of an issue...the last time i was there there was a young kid 7-8 yrs old there. As long as your slow going. but coffeman should produce too i just caught more bass than anything. I would also try and catch a perch or have a few large goldfish especially if your gonna be there after dark. The flatheads should be getting close to spawning and the big ones usually like live bait and there are some BIG flats in there. Good luck!
-
Yes right before dark but its hard to keep the bass off your hook. I would fish aldrich bridge at daylight or around 6pm till dark on the south end west side. Just north of the big downed tree theres a big flat rock. The channel comes under the bridge and swings up about 50yrds from there and they come up out of it if the baitfish are in there.
-
I should add too that i hunt the shinners on the flats. Thats why the cats move in on them is primarily feed. So where you find shinner schools there should be cats. Ive fished the flats at ruark with little luck but that doesnt mean anything however h highway bridge on the beach side just down from the little bush on the end is where ive caugh the most and biggest cats on the whole lake. Lol dont hold me to all of this though...i tell my buddies this stuff all the time and they wil go and not catch a thing but i really hope you get into them. Ps if it rains hard in the back of greaser should really produce doing what slab talked about. Good luck!!

When its like this out and the water is still not blazing hot 6-10ft. Whent it get real hot out late jun in to aug. I do that depth early and then as it gets hot by mid morning i will go out to the edge or in the channel 12-20ft. Good luck friday. Theres some good flats across from coffeman and just east of aldrich bridge
-
Slab is right for sure. You can also drift flats with said baits early, late, and def. At night and produce limits as well. One thing to note is male cats DO NOT eat while on the nest but they will strike while guarding for protection but 4 out of 5 times you will end up in the rocks and hes not coming out. After laying the females hit the flats. So if there not biting or you keep getting hung up in place that you havent before try another bridge in a different part of the lake or if you have a boat fish flats around the bridge. Especially after the spawn cats will be on the flats in the cooler parts of the day. Early morning and after dark catfish hit shallow water to hunt. Keep that in mind and youll find some. Get a 1\4 in cast net and with practice youll never have to buy bait and the shinners are usually around rip rap and on the flats. Good luck all!
-
Straight across out coffmen to the left side all the way to the bend drifting with shinners is killer like slab said. On a good day can have my limit by 9am if u get there by day break. East of the bridge is all good flat too. On hot days you can do the same in the channels and catch some. 4Ft 1/4 cast net and some good shadesand youll never have to buy shinners if your in a boat. Im going to take my wife friday and do some drifting. That pattern in addition to fishing riprap and ledge bluffs should produce cats from now till cold weather.
-
Both...but this paticular night i was fishing rip-rap
-
Great report slab...sounds like you guys had a blast! I did the same last night with cats...my buddy has enough for a while now. I love doing that everyone wins...someone gets fish...i get to put them on'e...i get to catch them and i dont have to clean them! Great job slab!
-
Forgot about him...lakeys was probably inbetween them dying and getting more. If im in the boat i just catch them but i gotta find my cast net.
-
I thought so too but they didnt have any
-
Could have been shedding which would explain the 2 tone color and the bands.

Fished the rocks around aldrich last night. Used leeches and shiners. I didnt take my boat so i bought shiners at bait masters got em down there and only about a doz or so were shiners the rest were small and i mean small crappie minnows. I say that to say this...caught one on a leeche on first cast the second it hit the water and then not much til around 600. I moved down a lil ways closer to the channel and picked up 3 right in a row around 5lbs. Then they shut down cause thats when i realised i had no more shiners. Other than the first one they all wanted a couple good sized shiners...that was the best bait. Guess im gonna have to start checking all the bait i buys. Right before dark they were really up in the shallows by the rocks...there were a lot swirling. Ended up with 6 avg 2lbs wih one 8lber. Its getting to be that time for those who like the cats! Good luck
