Spring has sprung and the whites are on the run
nwaflakes replied to BilletHead's topic in Spring & Neosho Rivers (OK)
Thanks. You guys have already provided a treasure trove of information on this topic, but I am going to be going out with my kids and my nieces (all 8 - 12 year olds) this weekend and wanted to do what I could to simplify the adventure and maybe catch a few fish in the process. I was planning on going up the spring and fishing that stretch from the power lines to the 10 bridge from about noon to 5 or 6PM. I was thinking trolling with crank baits at 5-8 ft may be the easiest route to take with that many in the boat, but also had some 2.5'' gogo minnows in various colors fitted on road runners on various colors, all be it most of it is a mixture of chartreuses and white. I thought those would be fairly easy to throw and slow real back to the boat. I read where spinners did well, but didn't have much experience with those and wasn't sure how kid friendly it would be. Anyway, if yall guys have any pointers for fishing with youngen's in this situation I am all ears. Thanks. -

I am planning on going out this Saturday with the family, and was wondering which was the better place to launch between 10 and twin bridges? I have a 21ft deck boat and am closer to twin bridges, but I wasn't sure on the condition of their ramps at the moment? I am sure either place will be packed this weekend, but it is the only time I can get out. -

We fought the wind most of the day yesterday on the Neosho, but did have some success trolling white crank baits about a mile or so from the twin bridges boat ramp. We jigged fished north of the gravel bridge with chartreuse and white gogo minnows and marabous on road runners with very limited success. Not many boats out yesterday and those we talked to seemed to be doing about the same. We'll try em again in a few weeks and may go up the spring the next go around.

I'm finally getting a chance to get out on the river tomorrow in search of whites! Thanks for all the updates! When using crank baits did you have success with one particular color or model over another? What depth were you trolling at? I think our plan now is to put in at twin bridges and head up about the Neosho about a mile or so pass that first bridge and troll with crank baits then move over to jigs and gogo minnows if we can find a pocket. Anybody try the spring river yet?

Neosho Whites late report
nwaflakes replied to smiling mallard's topic in Spring & Neosho Rivers (OK)
Hey, not trying to steal your spot or anything, but I was just curios about how far up the Neosho you went? Looks like you put in at Twin Bridges? -
I fished on the Spring on Sunday for a few hours from the power lines up towards HWY 10 with very little action. The water was very muddy with maybe a foot a visibility, and I spoke with a few other groups and did not hear of any successes. The boat ramp at Twin Bridges was absolutely packed. It took us 20-30 minutes of waiting in line to get launched and about that same amount of time to get picked up. I heard the Neosho was wall to wall with spoon billers.

Whites Running In Spring River Yet?

I put this in another post, but we did not fair very well yesterday. The water was filthy, cold and running fast with the rain on Saturday, and there was also a lot of debris floating in it. We put in at 10 and fish down to the boat houses for a few hours and caught a handful of whites, but most were smaller then we usually see. A friend of mine trolled on the Spring yesterday from the power lines and to the south for a few hours and caught a dozen, but the boat traffic just got to be so thick it was difficult to manage. -
I went yesterday and fished from HYW 10 down to the boat houses and the water was filthy with a lot of debris floating in it. We fished a few hours and caught a handful, but it was very spotty at best. I got to meet the local game wardens (who were both honestly very friendly) and they said they hadn't heard of much success on Sunday, but it sounded like it was real good on Friday. A fried of mine trolled yesterday on the Spring from the power lines and south for a few hours and caught a dozen, but said the boats got so thick in that area that it was difficult to manage. You couldn't have fit another boat in a twin bridges yesterday and even the shotty ramp there at 10 was full of boats and cars. Tis the season!

Thanks. It is a 16ft aluminum so 10 would be manageable. I had planned on putting in at 10 and fishing around there to start and if nothing was going on heading down towards the power lines to the south. Going to start by throwing 1-2'' chartreuse and/or white minnow on an 1/8 or 1/16th oz road runner jig head. If you thought something else would be better this weekend I would be all ears. -

Do you think it would be better to put in at the HWY 10 bridge and fish around that area, or put in at Twin Bridges? -

Feels a little early, but I thought I would ask if anyone is having luck for white bass up the spring or Neosho rivers yet? Going to try to get out this weekend around twin bridges, but haven't made up my mind yet on which way to go. -

Fished on Sunday with pretty decent success and it looks like most other boats were catching whites with good frequency as well. Boats were thick both on the spring and Neosho both days this weekend. Couldn't fit another boat in at twin bridges on Saturday afternoon. Is this still considered pre-spawning or are we in the full on out spawning period? If so, how long does it normally last? Thanks. -

Hopefully with the overnight lows creeping up this week and a chance for a good, warm rain that will push more fish into the river. I think we'll try the Spring again this weekend, but if things are slow we may take your tip and flip over to the Neosho to see what damage we can do. The water level on Grand and also the Spring should start inching up in the next few weeks and hopefully the cats follow right behind it. -

On the retrieve we were just casting up to the bank and slowly bringing it back with the rod tips pointed down just off the water, and then giving it a jerk every now and then to hopefully make it look like they were bouncing off the bottom. If you have a better method I would be all ears. -

We fished the Spring for whites this past Sunday mainly between the Highway 10 bridge and the boat houses to the south. Really didn’t fair all that well and the groups we talked with seemed to be having only mediocre success. maybe it was the cooler weather that pushed through that night. We fished early in the AM through about 3PM mainly with 1/8 oz road runner jigs and chartreuse minnows as well as different colored grubs, and also through some spoons. Some guys back at the ramp said that they had success the day before throwing large maroon sluggos. Seeing is believing though…
