Not every trip is epic and while it's easy to say about any trip and or float that it sure beats working, seldom is it expressed by how much it actually does beat out a day at the office. There is no applause meter or cheesy magazine quiz (10 question to know if your trip was fun) to determine that. Add in the fact that each participate, like witnesses to a crime, are likely to have a very different description of the perpetrator of said crime and we arrive at the conclusion that there is no scale to weigh the results of any trip. Right? Read the Rest

Carp-A-po-lu-sa (Probably spelled that wrong) ended this weekend with a bash at the shop. Some great prizes were handed out and a good time was had by all as best I could tell. Looking forward to next year and hopefully I'll be on the board this time. Thanks for putting such a great event! Are we Not Fish!!!

When I create a pattern or ty something for the first time I try to exaggerate some of the features of the bug I am trying to imitate. For crayfish patterns that includes the claws, eyes and antenna. Now exaggerating doesn't always mean larger, I just want the feature to standout more and make it so no one looking at the pattern will have any dough what is the claws, the eyes etc. In fact I prefer the claws to be smaller and not equal in size to each other. It makes the crayfish look more defenseless and easier pray for Mr. Smallie, I think anyway. When it comes to color I want a dark pattern and a light pattern in the box. I also try to use materials that will have some motion even when the pattern is at rest as I find most takes on Crayfish patterns happen while the pattern is at rest. Hope that helps you out some. Remember there are no bad tys but there some not worth repeating.

Good Point! Can't be all bad hasn't killed me yet.

My favorite fishing in Missouri has always been South of the 38th parallel. More or less that's where the water becomes clear as moonshine, the country a bit rougher and there are still plenty of places where the road just ends. Excellent Smallmouth and Trout fishing all more or less in the same area. Terry and I planned a trip a few weeks back and this time we were going to be joined by Hunter,Terry's step son and Debi, by far the best part of the two of us. Read the rest

I've not used the Taneycomo Sculpin. But caught a few on pine Squirrel Sculpins. Size 6 hook in olive or my favorite natural.

I'll have to look at that book thanks for the info! I enjoy finding materials not intended for fly tying and finding new uses for them. Thanks for taking a look

Flyology 101, sorry this isn't where your going to find anything about the the latest rap or hip hop album by anyone. We're talking fly tying here. more specifically the science of fly design. But the first thing I want to get out of the way though is that you have to decide which camp your going to pitch your tent in. There are two basic sites. The one that says there are no new patterns only reproductions of the same old thing with updated materials. Yes a woolly Bugger is a Woolly Bugger is a Woolly Bugger no matter what you use to replace the hackle, true enough. But to think that there is nothing new to be discovered. To that I call Bullshit! That's like saying there are no new paintings because there all just paint on canvas. Setup camp here you may become very proficient at tying Woolly Buggers and become little bored. The other camp considers that not even the hook is a common denominate any longer. Tube flies arguably use no hook in the design of the pattern. A stretch to make that statement because a hook is after all still ultimately required to catch the fish, well maybe that statement is a stretch, but so what. We're tying flies here not calculating a trajectory for a Mars mission launch. This is the camp where catching fish really is second to being at some of the most beautiful places in the world. Fly fishing is just fun and I'll never consider it a sport. Sure I want to become better at it. Ty a better fly, catch a bigger fish. But my competition is with the elements and the fish not the other guy or gal from any camp. You don't have to choose your site but know eventually it will more than likely choose you if you continue to ty. Click Here to read the full story Then come back here to say: What is your favorite pattern type to fish? What is your favorite pattern? What do you catch with it?

WOW! Very nice fish must have been a blast

Nightbrew you are right I can't speak for everyone but my response to your question was the typical, Don't ask cause I'm not going to tell response.Sorry for that. In my defense I blame the inter-web and I think it has done us all a great deal of disservice actually. I was taught that you judge a person by his or her actions not their words and unfortunately these days, words are more and more our only way of communicating. That's not all bad but I only know you as Nightbrew and have no idea how many Trophies you have hanging on the wall or how much fish you have in the freezer or what horde of friends that you may unleash upon my streams or how much reverence you hold for every precious inch of water and all the wild things that it supports. It is the inter-wed conundrum, Good, that I meet a lot of new people that I would never meet without on-line access, Bad that I actually very seldom meet anyone. I'll add for no particular reason that secret spots and holes can seldom live up to the version that we create for ourselves but all the same we believe them to be. So sharing isn't always as simple as it may sound. Better to error on the side of cautions... or is it? As far as your question goes, Finding smallmouth isn't the issue I find it's typically access. Where can a person wade, put in and take out I find that to be more troublesome. The Elk river isn't bad but you you'll need to get an early start or you'll be swamped by Party Floaters like bees on a bear raiding a hive. Look for outfitters and locations where you can put in early float a half day, take out and start over in the evening. That way you'll stay ahead of or way behind the animals. If you fish there you'll catch Smallies there. The Elk is no secret location and there are a lot of fish maybe even to many? If your camping well that's another issue. The campgrounds in that area are geared for the party group so.... especially on the weekend... well good luck with that! It is my main reason for not going there this time of year. Big Piney can be good and so can the little Piney but again it has the same issues as the elk just on a slightly lower scale. Google Campgrounds and ottfitters on what ever river or stream name and ask about ins and outs. Use the hot time of the day between floats to scout locations and get a good map that always helps. Hope this gives you a couple of places to try but don't say I didn't warn you about Party Floaters!

South of the 38th parallel is a good starting point

Isn't school out on Saturdays?
-
Jerry Rapp No, I have nothing to advertise or the money to pay for it.

Gavin If I was providing a list of critters that will raid a cooler, Pot-Belly Pig would not be on the list, it will be now. Ham I sure never did?
-
Cooler even has a rope that I can try down the lib with wasn't concerned enough to tie it up during the day, my mistake but I wasn't expecting a raid from a Pot-Bellied Pig.
