  1. Is the water up enough to float above twin bridges?
  2. I'm trying to put together a family outing with my wife and four-year-old next Wednesday or Thursday. How is the water level above twin bridges and below Rainbow Springs? Best campground and outfitter (I would like to use my own canoe)? Best short stretch of water to allow a little girl (first float trip) to swim and catch some fish without staying out all day? Where do the special fishing regulations start?
  3. Has anyone floated from Kerr to Y bridge lately? How is the water/fishing in this stretch right now?
  4. I have also been a little weary to eat fish from the James. I never keep the bass, but I may have to start eating some google-eye. We caught several 9" eyes last week. As far as I now the real danger is the E coli which should not be a problem if cooked and eaten in moderation. Mercury levels are higher in freshwater predator fish, but again, if eaten in moderation is not a problem.
  5. Thanks for the report. I have backpacked most of the upper Buffalo and fished some of it with my pack rod. However, I have yet to float it. It will have to become a priority. FYI... The small bluff just upstream of the Hemmed-in-Hollow trail is a great camp site.
  6. Bobber, Where did you put in and take out?
  7. I am looking for a good online source for Missouri river maps. I have been unable to find clear maps with access points and distances. Does anyone know of website where I could find accurate maps, including some of the smaller creeks?
  8. Floated Hootentown to the mud bank below McCall bridge this morning. We put in around 6:30 and didn't have a bite until the storm passed. We were able to pick up a few average sized smallies, but it was still slow. There are lots of people camping on this stretch of the river and plenty of trucks at the access points. It will definitely be busy this weekend.
  9. I just got mine this week. However, I'm afraid I won't be stimulating the economy much with it.
  10. Thanks! I should probably mention this boat will be used as both a solo and tandem. Any modifications will need to suit both applications. Also, I want to make sure most modifications are easily removable for transport and storage. I don't want to turn it into a lunker.
  11. I just bought a 16' Mohawk Intrepid and now I am ready to outfit it for some summer smallmouth fishing. Is there anyway to add a trolling motor without a motor mount? Do you have to make any special accomodations to protect the battery in a canoe? What other modifications have people made?
  12. If you want a pair strictly for fishing slick bottom rocks, you may want one of the ones you mentioned. However, if you want a more versitile float, fish, and casual sandal, check out a pair of Chacos. They are simple and durable. I have had a pair for about eight years and they still look new with the exception of the wear on the bottom. They have good Vibram soles, but are not felt bottomed. They also have the added advantage of being made of a plastic that does not hold odor like some others. You do have to deal with rocks.

    Canoe Rental

Y Bridge Canoe Rental has plastic canoes. I do not know what James River Outfitters use.
  14. Considering the reduced fishing pressure lately, I don't think this is a big problem to worry about. They are doing a lot less damage than the regular outlet crowd you see every weekend.
  15. Would anyone like to volunteer some information on when, where, and how to flyfish for stripers or hybrids? I have fished clousers for white bass on the James and Beaver Creek but would like to get into something bigger. I have a 7wt rod with a decent reel spooled with floating line. Can I make this outfit work?. I don't know that I have the funds to invest in much more than gas and flies for this effort.
  16. I appologize, it was in the April issue (pg 40). Sorry to those who bought the March issue. Its a good magazine though. The brief mention is part of the Next Weekend, Instant Adventures section. They map out a four day adventure in the Ozarks. Leonard is day 1. "Ring Leonard Keeney at Taneycomo Nights to schedule your wake-up call. Around midnight, he'll take you out on the water to cast flies for 20-pound trout by the light of the moon." It also lists his rates and his web site.
  17. Congrats to Leonard for a nice little plug in the March edition of National Geographic Adventure.
  18. I would be interested in knowing if the changes have had any positive impact on the fresh water shrimp population. If there decline was one of the reasons for adding the restrictions, did it work?
  19. You can certainly wade on the James in normal water conditions. However, the best holes are not by the access points. If you can't float and don't have private access, there is a pretty decent bluff hole below the Horse Creek access.
  20. The trophy area runs from Hootentown to Galena. I beleive the restrictions are one black bass over 15" per day.
  21. Has anyone been fishing the trophy section in the last week or so? How have the water conditions been?
  22. Hey Bork, Nice fish. Good to see your still around. Are you going to tell everyone what you were throwing? Did you try any top water? I will be floating the middle to lower part of the river on Thursday.
  23. That has been my strategy in the past as well. However, with as much water as we have had lately, it seems like the current has been so strong in some of the trusted spots that the fish had moved to calmer water. Even fishing the seems and edies has been difficult in some cases without an exposed gravel bar to get out and wade from.
  24. Floated from Kerr to Galena early Tuesday morning. Caught plenty of fish but more small ones this time (10"-12"). We did manage to find a couple of 15" smallies and one 17". I am still getting used to fishing the river now that it has water in it. Last year you could pretty much tell where they were holding. How does everyone like to fish the slow deep sections?
  25. What kind of water do you find most favorable for crank baits on the river? I sometimes have a hard time pulling myself away from the soft plastics.
