I love smallmouth, and I love the fly rod. But this time of year it can be tough to get em on the fly. Between swift currents, and spawning fish I struggled Saturday. I went to the best strip of brown fish creek I know of and I caught fish, 10-12 but no size and I'm used to 30+ when I wade that later in the year. I really wish I would have left the fly rod at home and fished a ned or something. I did pick up a few on a wiggle minnow and missed several that seemed like better fish but I finally put on a weighted leader and a crazy dad and picked up several more. Also there was a huge fly hatch. There were some big mayflies in the bunch and some fish were targeting them and my bite stopped altogether. Anyone else get into that this time of year? I'm gonna take my spinning/bait casting gear next time.
