  1. Thanks guys. Two of the three baits that I caught most of my fish on ( the crawler and the ned) I Heard about on this forum. I'll be expecting two more hot baits next year.
  2. My annual trip to the rock started fri. Afternoon. It was windy so I started with jerkers on gravel points. After couple hrs of that with nothing to show,I started to use Ned with Dave's heads. Started catching fish around docks on channel banks. No keepers but at least it was action. I left Millcreek and ran up above Baxter. And found dingy to muddy water up to 52 degrees. Started throwing rock crawler in mud bug and red wart. Caught 2 keeper blacks so decided that was starting pattern for day one of tournament on sat. Wind was blowing good at take off so only fished chunk rock windy banks. Best day I've had on table rock. 13 keepers. Best five went 19.62 lbs. With a 6.39 for big bass. Had a 5 lb lead going into day 2 wind did not blow hardly any on Sunday. I was afraid the wheels were going to fall off but scratched out 4 keepers on the crawler with a 5.89. Had 3 more keepers on the Ned when what little wind there was completely died. Ended up with 16.44 on day two. Held on for the win. Every fish I caught came from Baxter to the bridge above cambell point. We flipped a couple fish out of bushes on a black/blue beaver. But most fish were bout 8' deep. I'd hold my boat in 10' and basically parallel the bank. I probably won't be back to the rock until next year so I'll be a lurker until then. Thanks for everyone's help.
  3. CadeWompus- I also fished in the tournament this weekend with basscatfan. We were lucky enough to finish in 2nd place behind them. We fished in the Indians on Friday looking for fishable water that wasn't chocolate milk. Caught a couple solid 3lb largemouth and a 3lb smallmouth all on different baits...wart, swinghead, and spinnerbait. All were caught where the water transitioned from murky to clear. Then we went out on the main lake between Baxter and Big Creek and hit some grub spots. Immediately caught a keeper Kentucky on the grub. Went to another spot and I caught a 3.5lb largemouth on the grub. Hit some spots in Big Creek with the swing head and just caught shorts, but it was getting late, so we headed in. Decided to start tournament Sat on the main water since I had some good spots that we didn't hit Fri. Our thought was that with the cold night, the main lake fish may be less affected by the cold night than the fish in the shallower dingier water. Our plan was to fish some dingier water in the afternoon after it warmed assuming we had time. We hit a jerkbait spot that was a channel swing bank first but just shorts. Found a good area with a couple points between Baxter and the James that was holding fish. Caught our limit of 15inch spots and a 6lb largemouth all on the grub. Lost another good fish in a tree. It took us until afternoon to do it. We ran back towards Big Creek to his some of those main lake spots. The spot where I caught the bigger one yesterday on the grub by Big Creek was overtaken by the dingy water making its way downlake, so it wasn't fishable with the grub. We tried a couple other spots before heading in. Ended the day with 5 keepers that weighted 14.20lbs. Second day proved tougher with the grub. We switched to the spot where we caught the better fish on Sat and started throwing the jerkbait. Partner caught a solid smallmouth and then I hooked up with a 3.5 largemouth. We kept milking the spot all morning with various baits and ended up catching another largemouth and a 4lb smallmouth on the grub. That made 6 solid keepers off of a spot of about 40yds in two days that included a 6lb largemouth and 4lb smallmouth. Awesome spot! We couldnt get our 5th keeper there and the wind shifted off the spot, so we decided to end the day back in the Indians in the warming stained water. We hit several good looking areas but just shorts. So we came in with 4 keepers weighing about 12.5lbs giving us about 26.5 lbs total for 2 days. 2nd place out of 15 was a good finish for us, but basscatfan really humbled us. Good job to them for putting together two good bags that would do well in any of the tournaments on the lake this weekend. Our grub fish seemed to bite well in the clouds and low light conditions. Bite suffered in the afternoon sunny days. What happens to those fish? We tried adjusting by backing out, counting deeper, etc. Even fished on the bottom some with split shot and ned. Couldn't seem to get them to bite, but we know they were still there. Btw, almost all of our grub fish came with boat sitting in 30ft and 5-7count. At least a few scattered trees were critical.
  4. I think I can clear up this mystery. My annual trip to the rock is this weekend so it was inevitable that there would be huge storms followed by a major cold front. I'm just surprised that the fishing wasn't awesome up until the day before I got there. I'll be gone after Sunday so the fishing should get back to normal starting on Monday.
  5. Yes. I'm kind of nervous about it. They win the J.D.Powers award every year for costumer service. I hope most of the personnel stays the same. Hope I don't have to change my forum name.
  6. For what it's worth. They have a few crawlers at fins n feathers in Springfield Only had mud bug color.
  7. Lol. Don't worry. I don't do much damage to the fish population at table rock. I always get excited about fishing there and then I get there and remember how much I struggle on a lake that's full of fish. Fishing a small club tourney with my son. Maybe Dave's heads and the Ned will help are catch rate.
  8. Dang. I was wanting to pick up a few crawlers at B.P. on my way to the rock on fri.
  9. Prayers sent. Most all of us have had a loved on affected by cancer. When something like this hits it stops us in are tracks and It makes all the little troubles in life (that we make a big deal out of) seem not such a big deal anymore.
  10. Wow. Thanks for the quick help guys. I booked a room at the caboose junction.
  11. I'm making my annual pilgrimage to the rock this weekend. Taking wife, kids and daughter In law. Looking for a 2 room cabin or something along those lines. I'd like to fish the Baxter area but I'm open to suggestions. I called one resort and they wanted more than I wanted to spend for 2 nights but I may have to give in and spend the money. I've only been a lurker on the rock thread so far but I'll give some reports on are days on the water this weekend. I've got some of Dave's heads coming and am anxious to try the Ned. Thanks in advance.
  12. Fished for crappie today. Put in at roach. Went up the little niangua first. Pretty slow for me. Water temp was 52. Went back out in the bug niangua and started catching fish in 10' brush piles.water temp was 54. Then ran up in the osage caught fish suspended 10' down over 25' water temp was 47. Ended up with 30 but had to work for them.
  13. I crappie fished yesterday in the north Shore area. Lots of ice in the coves. The first 4 spots I fished we didn't get a bite but hit the mother load on the fifth spot and we caught are limit. It was a secondary point with pea gravel mixed with chunk rock. Caught bout half on jerk bait and half on Bobby garland baby shad. Water temp was 38.
  14. Thanks for the report. Makes me anxious to get over to pomme, but been on a pretty good crappie bite at loz and it's hard to leave.
  15. Thanks. I'm new to jig pouring. A friend of mine uses guitar string. Do you think that would work? I have a mushroom head mold but will have to modify it to take a guard.
  16. Thats an awesome looking head. What kind of weed guard do you use?

Smallie. I'm not trying to "bring" anything. As for my boat we have gigged over 20 times this year and we average about forty suckers a trip. That's 800 fish and not ONE game fish has been killed this yr. I've miss identified one fish in the last five yrs. A 12" largemouth. And I felt terrible about it. I guarantee you as others have said that I have killed more bass from a hook that was released than I have from a gig. All of us have are opinions about this subject and I doubt any of us are going to change are minds because of something said on this forum. Sorry if I offended you Sometimes it's best to agree to disagree

Ya smallie your right. We should never take a kid gigging because they MIGHT accidentally gig a game fish. And we should never take them hunting either because they Might make a pore shot and wound an animal. Let's just keep them inside playing video games.

Seth your 100% correct. I'd say that most people that want it banned because of a few bad apples have never even been. I have been gigging since I was old enough to get in a boat with my dad and grandpa. And now I take my son. We have friends and family down to the river for a fish fry anytime the weather allows. So yes it is a tradition that I'm proud to pass down to my son.
  20. I've sank over 100 brush piles some years. And it is hard work. I pour concrete In A 5 gallon bucket with a piece or romex wire doubled up and stuck down in the concrete with a loop sticking out to tie onto. After the concrete sets up I turn the bucket upside down and drop it and the concrete pops right out as long as it's not filled up to the top. If it's about 3" from the top it weighs 90 lbs and will sink any tree that can be moved by hand and won't roll under water even if they are running current. I prefer live oaks and hickory trees because they last the longest under water. Don't worry too much about what your using to tie the weight and tree together with because by the time that rots away more than likely the brush will be rotted away also. I have best results by sinking brush in an area that is void of structure.
  21. I've been looking for that a little bit but haven't seen anything to make me want to stop and fish. But I don't have a lot of experience with that technique.
  22. Exactly. Slow. Slow. Slow. Only thing I'm doing different is I'm using an 1/8 oz. Jig.
  23. Been chasing the crappie a couple times this week. It's not easy but did manage close to 2 limits both days. Most were suspended under docks bout 12' down over 25' of water. Only bad part is I see hundreds of em under a dock on the graph and can only catch one or two. Then move to the next spot. Good luck.
  24. I myself wouldn't kill a fish unless I was going to eat it and I wouldn't eat a bass as long as there is crappie and walleye swimming around. They taste way better.
