  1. Hit the White River yesterday and today with my two younger sons. Jacob is my youngest and my regular fishing buddy. Matthew lives in Springfield, MO and has not been fishing in two years. Jacob and I decided to hook him up. We put in at Wildcat Shoals and worked the Rainbow Hole and Hightower creek area. We had alot of action on 1/16 oz Rainbow Roostertails. Matthew caught the first fish of the day. We caught several under-size Brownies but did well with Rainbows. The surprise of the day was Jacob's catch of a Sunfish that was close to a pound. Water was running about 6400 CFS average while we were out there.

Today we worked the White from Shipps Ferry to the Norfork River (See separate report for Norfork). Tried various lures including Zig Rigs, Sculps, Roostertails. Water was milkshake colored from Buffalo River Run off.

Water was up and running hard. We did not see clear water until we hit the Northfork. However, Rainbow action was good on yellow and black Roostertails. We caught fish all day. Most Rainbows were 12-14 inch.

  2. Today we worked the Northfork tailwaters from the Catch and Release area to the White River. We were throwing Yellow and Black, Brown Trout, and Rainbow trout Rooster tails. We also tried various Zig Jigs. We did not have any success with the Zig Jigs but caught several browns, cutthroat, and brook trout with Roostertails. All of these were about 12-13 inches in size. We did pickup a couple of 14 inch Rainbows though. Water was running about 2800 CFS. Very clear and nice.

  3. Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance....Complacency, in any shape or form, can lead to tragedy. There has been alot said about lack of proper training, etc, etc. But here is the bottom line....If you are on the water, you should always wear a properly fitted personal flotation device. As an officer, it is your responsibility to make sure that anyone in your custody is properly outfitted with one, no excuses. That said though, enforcement action typically begins with someone making a conscious decision to violate the law....If someone stayed home and drank or smoked dope, they would probably never be caught; however, all too often, people engage in ILLEGAL activity in public, on the highway and on the water. Over 40% of all boating fatalities in the U.S. in 2014 involved drugs or alcohol. A person is killed every thirty minutes due to drunk driving.

It is an absolute disgrace that families have to witness fights, cursing, alcohol abuse, nudity, drugs and stupidity in public, in our truly beautiful lakes and streams. I am glad that we have dedicated men and women who have made it their career to "encourage" folks not to do those things in public. So you know, my law enforcement career was ended by a drunk on Memorial day weekend in 2000. I am now a criminal defense attorney...I think I am uniquely qualified on this subject....

  4. Got called out to fisherman that had been fishing at night in brackish water. They did not put their parking brake on and their truck rolled into the water and sank. I got called out to retrieve the truck by the tow truck company. Upon arriving, the watch commander told me that I was not getting in the water because of them....He pointed across the water to six pairs of eyes. There were six alligators 6-8 ft in size. I told the watch commander that I was there as a "commercial diver" with my own gear and was not there as a member of the Sheriff's Dive Team, nor was I using my dive team gear. In I went and after an hour of being under water in zero visibility muck, I collected my $150 and went home. Got chewed out Monday by my boss for my weekend swim the the gators....I can't believe that I have lived to the age I am now....

  5. As a former Chief Deputy who patrolled parks, lakes and rivers in Southern Missouri, I can tell you that the ones smoking dope, getting drunk and fighting are the same ones violating the game laws, littering, breaking glass on the rocks, spraying graffiti, etc. We covered 755 Square Miles with six deputies and two water patrol officers (now troopers) and two game wardens. Considering we had two lakes, and two major rivers, corps parks and campgrounds, along with other assorted crimes, any enforcement action you can take ultimately makes our natural resource areas safer and more enjoyable for everyone. We sure did not do it for the money.....

  6. My son Jacob and I hit the river at 7:00 am this morning. Six generators running - about 9400 CFS average. Plenty of water....We put it at Wildcat and went all the way up to the Chutes. I took BFTMaster's advice and bought some Zig Jigs at Harps in Mountain Home. I watched Phil Lilly's videos on Jig Fishing last night and figured I would try it.....On my third cast I caught my first rainbow of the day. Jig fishing is definitely an art and both my son and I will need a lot more practice...We had tons of bites. We got caught sleeping a bunch and did not get our hooks set. By lunch time though we had limited out.... post-19008-0-73997800-1435955151.jpg

We used different kinds of lures today. Roostertails, Zig Jigs, Rapalas, stickbaits....We caught fish on them all!

When the first rain came we headed home. Happy, excited and elated. I appreciate everyone's advice, the videos and encouragement. This forum has been a blessing. I printed out the Guns and Hoses Tournament paperwork and Jacob and I will have to see if we can sneak over to Taney County for some "preview scouting" to see if we are up for the Tourney. Have a great Fourth of July! We are truly blessed to live in the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave! Here is a shout out to my son, John, (U.S. Army - 2nd BCT, 82nd Airborne) and all other Veteran's, both active and former....

  7. Highrock - Welcome!

If you are a trout fisherman that I would recommend the White River system. I am down here in the Bull Shoals Lake - Norfolk Lake area. Trout fishing down here is excellent. You also need to explore Table Rock. Good luck and have fun!

  8. This past Saturday was a great day to fish! My son and I went out in his River Rat with a 25hp Evinrude. Being from Florida, we are huge spinning reel fans....One day we will learn the fly rod...We fished with Rainbow Roostertails 1/16 and Rapala Rainbow x-rap 2-3 ft lures. We caught our limit on rainbows and threw back several small browns. Our largest brown was 16 inches. We started at 8:00 am and went till about 3:00 pm. Fish were biting all day....Generation was going all day.....We fired up the smoker and reflected on the day....Its great to live in the Ozarks!

  9. Hello Everyone! I am new to the forums. I live in Southern Missouri and work in Arkansas. I cross the White River numerous times every week. I typically have been fishing the Northfork of the White, Bryant Creek, Bull Shoals Lake and Northfork Lake. I recently have started fishing the White River tail waters with my son. I have been reading numerous posts from the wise ones here and thought I would add or possibly take away, a little humor...I look forward to meeting everyone!
