  1. I suspected he was from around here because of some of the Ozarks stuff I've seen him post. ...and yeah, he does fine. Catches plenty of fish. And a good saltwater fisherman too. He's so close to the fish in that shot because he's tighlining I think
  2. Yeah exactly, I see the "activity" and "All unread"options, but I don't want to see activity for all categories. It would be better if I could filter it down to just show me the activity for the topics and areas I am interested in. Right now the "unread posts" for me contains things about lakes that I don't fish or are in another state, boat tips and tricks and I don't have a boat, etc. Thanks for the suggestions and keep 'em coming if anyone has a better solution. It seems like there is a "stream options" button but it doesn't give you many options...would be sweet if you could filter from there and hit "save as a default view" or something
  3. Does anyone else visit the forum mainly from their phone using an internet browser (like chrome or safari)? If so, how do you best "organize" it to access only the new posts and items you're most interested in? I went through and "followed" the sub forums I am most interested in, for example Smallmouth Talk, Trout Talk, Wild Trout Streams, etc. But then there's no way to see a view of just "sub forums I follow". I don't want to come to the site and then have to click on "forums" and then scroll all the way down and all that. It seems messy and hard to find what it is I focus on as a fisherman. Any ideas? Also, does this forum link with Tapatalk? That would make it much easier on mobile if it did. Thanks for any ideas
  4. Found my answer ...
  5. Found what appears to be a pit mine over here in Lemay area. Seems to be near the Aldi that I go to. Anyone know if this place is worth a shot or if it can be accessed?
  6. Interestingly I generally have been tying my own leaders for a while now too. But I'm kinda tired of all the knots in the line, and lately I long for the simplicity of that extruded leader again. Also, $9 for a 5 pack of leaders is plenty cheap for me. Thanks for all the info everyone
  7. To the other fly guys here, I was looking at buying a pack of leaders recently and haven't bought some in a long time, and am also new to the state so still figuring some things out. So I poll thee: what do you find is your most common leader length and weight/rating? 9ft, 5x 7.5ft? Something else? Obviously it depends on the stream and fish you'll be catching, but what is your most common "go to"? So far I mainly fish for trout, along hwy 44 (spring creeks, meramec, etc), I want to fish the Current more, and plan to fish for smallies Thanks for any insight!
  8. Ryan Walker. He's the founder of Ozark Smallmouth Alliance so I figure you guys may have heard of him. Bathroom only available on the deluxe model
  9. Yeah it's cool! I had thought many times about making one but never ended up trying it. This thing is very convenient and snug and is just like a normal tent so you can keep the bugs out with netting, zippers etc. We fished the section that ends at Prosperine access
  10. Ah nice - thanks for the intel! Guess I'll go above Scotts Ford then
  11. I (and probably everyone else with this warm weather) am planning to get out tomorrow. Was hoping to have another go at some smallmouth, this time with my fly rod. I haven't been to the meramec yet so was thinking of going there and Wade fishing or paddling my kayak up and floating back down, getting out and fishing here and there. I was thinking of going somewhere around steelville since it's relatively close to me (1.5hrs) coming from St Louis. Would the access at Birds Nest or Scotts Ford around there be good for this type of thing? Was also thinking I could fish upstream of Woodson k Woods but don't know how that would be this time of year. Any guidance or help me rule something out? thanks
  12. Stabilization It's a great small-body cam, and it has in-body stabilization (IBIS) of the sensor that operates even in video mode. This should hopefully decrease the need for a gimbal, but perhaps not do away with it entirely. You can find examples of the IBIS on youtube. If you're trying to hold your arm out into small spaces, at night(?)...probably going to be too shaky haha. If you can stabilize some with your body and proper "hand-held video techniques" then you should be fine. Additionally, with some lenses, like the two it comes with in the kit, they have in-lens stabilization that works in concert with the sensor stabilization. So all that makes for pretty stable footage. Again you can see comparisons on youtube (with/without stabilized lenses etc.) Low light Since it is a Micro 4/3s sized-sensor it is definitely smaller than the APS-C sized sensor mentioned in the Fujis above. Smaller sensor means less light, which means worse performance in low light conditions like you're describing. (not sure how much background you have here so I'm speaking as if you have none..perhaps you already know all this.) Anyway, this could be combatted with a really fast (low F-stop) lens like a F1.7 or something. Panasonic 20mm F1.7 would be a good choice for low light.
  13. Wait...BMF like Black Mafia Family? The drug running crew with Big Meech?
  14. I'm 5'10" 145lb. So not very big. I Keep trying to hit that 150 haha And essentially it's just used to float down the river, beach, and get in and out of to Wade fish right, so I don't need much boat. Would the royalex one be better for that (if they're more durable)?
  15. Nice! I think that fixed lens will be fun. Years ago I was really interested in the Sony RX1 I believe it was called. Full frame sensor and a fixed 35mm lens on the front.
  16. Looking for a nice stable solo canoe like the Discovery 119, Guide, or Pack Let me know if you're selling! Thanks
  17. Nice pics! I almost went for a Fujifilm on my most recent camera purchase but went with the Panasonic GX85 instead. I had been looking at one for years and as I focus a bit more on video, and they can be had for pretty cheap, I went for it. I've been happy so far! excited to see what else you shoot with it here's some of my recent favorites
  18. Just wanted to update this thread with what we ended up doing. My girlfriend and I camped on the Niangua out of my super nifty truck tent (picture attached), and did a kayak float for smallies with Ryan the following day from OSA. Interestingly we came up short on the smallies. (Excuses to follow...) It was a bluebird, high pressure, windy day, so I think they were just largely in lockjaw. I was fishing strictly with a fly rod, and caught one rainbow trout early on. Had a few bumps (likely smallies) on various streamer patterns but couldn't connect. Largely this was meant to be a 'learning' trip for me, and I told ryan that, so we focused alot on the how/why of certain things, so I could learn smallies a bit better. Additionally, we didn't have much time for the float so I think we kinda rushed past alot of water and he tried to only focus me on the best/most productive water. Which was great because it helped me identify what the most productive water likely is, through his eyes as a guide, but stunk because the bite was so off that day I still didn't catch any haha. We saw a few bald eagles! Wish I could share some videos on here from the trip Thanks for the advice and help everyone!
  19. I've camped at Lane Spring already. It does have pit toilets and water. I'm thinking I want to focus on smallmouth this trip. I can catch trout further into the winter right I realized Al's suggestion is only 2.5 hours from me actually. I think it would be cool to camp somewhere in that area and do a canoe float from Alley Spring to eminence on the Jack's fork. Then we could see alley Spring..that area looks really pretty and I think my girlfriend would like it. Anyone know how that's fishing right now?
  20. If the smallmouth are now moving out of smaller creeks like huzzah and courtois, would that perhaps mean back into the bigger river of the meramec? If so, I could look into camping at Meramec State park or Ozark outdoors family resort, both on the meramec itself. But I don't really think of the meramec water as blue and scenic as the current river/Jack's fork from what i can see. And I really want to be somewhere scenic like that.
  21. Dang I did not realize all that. I wasn't interested in it for the stockers...just want to go catch some wild trout on a river that looks so beautiful. Guess that doesn't really line up with this timing. Al I like your idea. I'd be more apt to drive less and not more though..Twin Rivers is 3hours from me, and we're only camping one night. I may still do it, but maybe I can find some smallies closer to me.
  22. Thanks for the heads up. I called and there's only one site available at Montauk for my dates. That sounds a bit crowded to me. I'll look into Courtois and Huzzah options
  23. I'm planning on taking my girlfriend "truck tent" camping next weekend and am trying to decide where to go. Coming from St Louis Was planning on wading and fly fishing for trout on the Current river, and camping at Montauk State park. My girlfriend can Wade and fly fish fine But I have a kayak and really want to try for some smallmouth before it gets too cold (not sure that it ever does, idk). So I am also considering camping at either Bass resort or Huzzah Resort and renting another kayak for her and floating either huzzah or courtois creek for smallmouth. We Would probably take some spinning rods for that, but if I knew I could get out of my kayak alot to stop and fish, I'd bring the fly rod...I just kinda hate fly fishing from my butt all day in a kayak..feel like it's just not worth it. So which should we do this time of year... Current river or Courtois or Huzzah? Also, We don't mind a few other people while camping...I don't want the place to be a zoo, but a few people is good. Girlfriend isnt looking for some super remote wilderness experience generally...A few other lights on and people nearby makes us feel better. Probably because we're both city folks I guess
  24. Can you just camp wherever you want along the trail? Will there be areas that were already kinda "carved out" or used recently by fellow backpackers?
  25. Ok cool. Hmm. Well what if we focused more on Rocky Creek falls and that area... Like hiking from Rocky Creek falls to the Current river and back over the course of two nights. Would it be worth bringing the fishing rods? Would there be any smallies in Rocky Creek itself perhaps? Or just panfish/sunfish
