  1. Just got a new to me boat (noob boat owner, to boot) & getting back into fishing. I live just outside town & plan to stick close to home until I get more experience with the boat. I'm thinking staying between Gallinipper & Horseshoe Bend, maybe go up the Sac or Osage a bit. Not targeting any particular species, but I'd be tickled pink to get into some nice bluegill, crappie, or white bass/hybrids. Any tips on where a fella might could run into some? Never seen or caught a white bass in my life, but I hear they're fun & tasty & would like to find out. Don't expect any honey holes, but a point in the right direction would be highly appreciated.
  2. Will do. Talked to my uncle south of Camdenton & he's stoked to help me learn boating & fishing. He said he'd love to fish more, but doesn't like launching his boat alone, so I reminded him his nephew is also retired & more than happy to step up if he needs a fishing partner 😉 He's got a spot reserved at Pomme for a few days in August & invited us down, so that'll be fun. He's a good dude, so it'll be nice to reconnect (my grandmother played my dad against him since childhood, then did the same with myself & sister against his kids, so old family drama crap) & spend some quality hang time getting hooks wet. I picked up good charts for Truman & Stockton, but they were out of Pomme charts. Thinking I'll stick pretty close to town at first- Gallinipper, Bear Creek & the like, unless I have someone along who knows the lakes well.
  3. Picked up a Shimano Sedona 3000 to put on a Shakespeare Ugly Stick 6' medium action rod. It came as part of a cheap rod/reel/tacklebox combo we bought for our daughter to use in the neighborhood pond that never got used. Googled the rod & got decent reviews as a solid, workman rod, so why not? I'm sure I'll move up to nicer rods as I gain experience & learn what I like/need, but this'll get me going for now. I'll see if I can con the ol' lady into having Santa put a nice trolling rig under the tree this year 😉 I looked at/fondled a Pflueger President as well & it wasn't even close & at only $5 more for the Shimano, it was a complete no-brainer. The Pflueger was nice, but the Shimano was crazy smooth. Best way I can put it is to compare a nice, stock Ruger Blackhawk to one built by a world class gunsmith. Glass smooth, tight, solid. I certainly don't need that level of gear & can't/won't swing it very often, but I absolutely love any precision, high quality mechanical device.
  4. Garmin 73SV came home with me tonight. Basspro had 'em on sale for $499, so we rode down & picked up life jackets & some other goodies while we there. Now I just gotta figure out how to use it 😆
  5. Thanks, guys. I'm definitely in the "don't know what I don't know" stage. I've got an uncle south of Camdenton who's big time into fishing & been at it a while, so I've got a how-to-use-my-new-to-me-boat & fishing technique instructor. Just trying to wrap my head around what I'll need & start researching it, looking for sales & the like. Tenkara actually looks kinda fun. Looks a lot like cane pole fishin' to me. Isn't fishing crappie with a jig pole the same kinda thing?
  6. Looks like it'd be interesting down at Bennet Springs (especially since I suspect I'm too stupid/uncoordinated to figure out fly fishing), but not sure how it'd work from a boat. Wouldn't you have to be close enough that the boat would spook any fish?
  7. Trying to figure out a good, general purpose fishin' rig for both the missus & I. We both grew up with spincasters, though I have learned how to use spinning reels. Neither of us know much about specific techniques, we're not targeting anything specific & will primarily be puttering around Truman & exploring its tributaries. I've got a Zebco Omega size 20 on a 5'6" ML rod & the missus a Zebco 33 micro on a 5'6" L rod. Probably just fine for crappie & bream, but I'm thinking maybe not the best for getting into bass or walleye. Was considering putting a Pflueger President or Shimano Sedona on a 6' or 6'6" M for myself & something like a Zebco 33 Gold or Platinum size 30 with a 6' M for her. We'll be throwing jigs/lures, live bait from time to time & maybe some trolling for white bass or walleye. Are those choices up to the task? Rod length? Would we be better served with 6'6" or 7' rods? I know how to bobber fish with worms on ponds & can sometimes get a crappie to take a jig off my aunt's dock. Past that, I know bupkus. Not sure our little pond rigs are ideal for river/lake fishing, but don't have a ton of money to throw at it either.
  8. It might be silly, but I've just never had a warm & fuzzy buying used electronics- my level of technological mastery peaks at points, carburetors & tube amps. New fangled computer-y stuff confuses me enough that I'm loathe to roll the dice on a piece of used gear that I can't fix or that doesn't have the safety net of a warranty.
  9. Thanks. I've yet to stop in to Everhart's & need to change that. Just put it off, 'cos I spend enough money just walking the fishing aisle at WM 😅 How are Everhart's prices in comparison to everyone else? Think you mighta swung me over to the 73SV. 'Preciate the input fellas.
  10. Garmin says the Striker Vivid 7SV comes with QuickDraw. Am I missing something? 73SV looks interesting, though I really don't want a touch screen- we just don't get along. 7SV & 73SV come in at similar price points, though I'm not real clear on the differences. The 73SV also comes with maps, which the 7SV does not. Where's the function/price tradeoff? Humminbird Helix 7 looks like it would do what I want, but the SI version is almost $200 over budget.
  11. Hard to find the real skinny on the Lowrance, re- GPS only/X models & they don't support charting/plotting/mapping. Garmin Striker 7SV looks like a solid choice. Or? Dunno as I care about pre-loaded maps all that much, 'cos it's highly unlikely my little 15' tin can will ever get put in anywhere other than on Truman, Stockton, or Pomme & won't matter on the rivers. I definitely like the idea of mapping & marking way points & hot spots.
  12. We've got an itty bitty office in town & the ladies there have always been pleasant to me, though I've heard they can get unhelpful if they don't like you/catch 'em on a bad day. Went down to the office in Bolivar once & they were beyond friendly & helpful. Maybe just an issue of having to deal with KCMO snowflakes?
  13. Thanks guys. I don't know what I don't know. I was eye-balling the Lowrance Hook Reveal 7x with triple shot & thought it sounded good. Can the "GPS Only" models accept a map card? The GPS plotter certainly seems useful. Map card vs. GPS plotter & paper map? I get the convenience of pre loaded maps, but are they any more accurate or up to date than current paper maps?
  14. Found myself a nice little starter boat & would like have a fish finder. Never used one, never seen one used. Haven't even fished from a boat since 1980. Recommendations for a solid fish finder in the sub $500 range? I'll be mostly either on Truman, or the Sac & Osage & have a hankering to explore every river that'll safely float a 15' aluminum outboard. Any of 'em good enough to help me dodge trees & rocks while puttering about, channeling my inner Huck Finn & hoping to put supper in the boat?
  15. Who do y'all like for prescription sunglasses that won't break the bank? Specifically bifocals with wide frames (I have a XL noggin). My nice little photochromic, anti glare Italian jobbies are great for driving, but I'd love something polarized with green mirrored lenses.
  16. So essentially, I'll need registration docs &/or MSOs for the boat & motor, 'n at least a notarized form 1957 for the trailer? I would obviously double check paperwork requirements at the DMV office beforehand; just trying to figure out the process & what buzzwords or phrases to look for in an ad. Kinda like most MO boat ads reading "all 3 titles". Thnaks.
  17. Hope this is the right place to put this. I'm looking for a used 16' or so fishing boat. Wanting a 25-50hp 2-stroke, with seats the missus won't object to & a live well. Decent trolling motor & fish finder a bonus. My question however, is what is involved in registering a boat bought in KS in MO? What documentation do I need to have from the sell to be able to title & register everything here? Much thanks in advance, fellas/gals.
  18. Where's the boat located?
  19. I'd love to talk to you about the boat if it's still available. I'll shoot you a PM.
  20. But God forbid someone eat a black bass.
  21. My grandma made some dandelion wine once that was horrible. Dad & I used to make a lovely plum wine that just about needed a chaser it was so strong & a lot of pear & apple wine when I was a kid & he still does an amazing blackberry wine. I'd love to get some plum & pawpaw trees established & gather me up some copper sheeting & tubing.
  22. Thank you. We've been here just over a year now, so we're fairly well settled in at this point & able to start getting out & exploring more.
  23. Just got back from my aunt's place on LOZ. Ended up with 5 keeper white crappie, including a nice 12"er, along with a couple green sunfish & a dink 6-8" largemouth. Missus caught herself a keeper crappie yesterday (my, what a delicious little fish) as well, along with a 18" blue cat this morning & has decided the fishing is a very appropriate use of one's free time. 'N this, just fishing off my aunt's dock, while visiting with family & getting to watch my 2 1/2 & 7 year old grandnieces catch their very first fish.
  24. I just don't understand the need for grown folks to criticize another's choices, particularly when those choices are well within the law & pertinent wildlife regs. I mean, c'mon. Game is a wonderful, tasty & nutritious resource & I'll begrudge no man for eating what he catches.
  25. What makes bass so special? They're game & a tasty source of protein. Do the tournament guys get to hog 'em all for their entertainment, while the plebes are told not to eat the "special" fish? I don't get it. Biology, food chain, all that, I understand, but harumphing because someone had the temerity to harvest your precious is beyond me.
