  1. Check this out Virgil fans
  2. I do so that's at least one.
  3. Couple of years ago I was on the Fall Creek dock fishing of the downstream end. There were several people there and the guy next to me and i both caught the same fish in the mouth at the same time on power bait.
  4. Check with Lilley's, I think they are running some specials this month.
  5. I like Paul's too but their selection is not like it used to be. still a great place to visit and tell fish stories. Couple years ago my snagging rod need new rod clips and they have a guy who fixes rods and he did a great job at a fair price. Can't get that at a big box store. Other than Grandpa's and Central Hardware the only place to buy fishing gear when I was a kid was in local bait shops which have all but disappeared. Grandpa's does bring back some great memories. Their little diner in front was pretty good too on the Rock Road.
  6. Years ago the best place in STL for fishing gear was Grandpa Pidgeons. Maybe not the high end fly rod but they had affordable gear the average fishermen needed and lots of it. I know you high dollar equipment guys won't agree but we used to buy a lot of gear from them. Plus where could you buy a new rod, some tackle, have lunch and change your oil on the parking lot.
  7. I agree that BPS is slipping in the fishing department. They sell way to much in clothes and other stuff. I was at an Academy in La. and it was not much to talk about. I have been buying most of my fishing gear from Cabelas in Hazelwood. Very impressed with the selection and pricing. They also have some good clearance sales on fishing gear this time of year.
  8. Phil, sorry to hear that Vince has passed but he is in a better place. I did not know Vince well but had met him several time the last being at the Healing Waters event over by your house. He sure was a heck of a fisherman and person. Dave.
  9. You can buy them pre tied at Lilley's or tie your own. I tie an egg type hook on the end of the line. about 3ft up from the hook i double the line and put it through a barrel weight that has the brass swivel and loop the line around the weight into a half hitch. then pull the weight and double the line about 10 inches and tie and over hand knot creating a loop. i tie the overhand knot for the loop twice so it doesn' t slip and close the loop. Not pretty but it works for me.
  10. Good report John. We'll be down for, four days last weekend this month.
  11. Jim, glad you did the search because it does work. If you google uses for wd40 you will be surprised at the uses for that stuff. we also use anise oil on the hotdogs and let them sit in the fridge for weeks to soak it in. garlic oil works to but the wd is about the best. It is made from fish oil and its works great for juggin. You don't need deep droppers on jugs to catch fish. cats are up in the water column feeding on bait and they smell the wd on the hotdogs. It sounds crazy but it works. Frederick, I agree with you on the gar post but we have killed them and cooked them. Hard to clean but they are great eating. we were at an old farmers place hunting turkey one year and went fishing after shooting time. the farmer and his wife fished with us and kept all the gar they caught. he cleaned them with tin snips and fried them in fresh ground hog corn. best fish i ever ate.
  12. For jug fishing a kid under 16 would need a permit. Here is a link to the rules for kids. http://mdc.mo.gov/permits/fishing-permit-information. Also you can't leave jugs unattended unless they are anchored to the bottom. If they are free floating you must stay in sight of them. Get on a flat away from the shallow water and use hotdogs. you only need to set your droppers to 5 or 6 feet deep if you are off shore. if you catch a small bluegill leave it on the hook for a flattie. Spray the dogs with a shad spray or wd40. That's all you need. here is a link to the jug fishing rules http://mdc.mo.gov/fishing/regulations/general-fishing-provisions/jug-line-regulations
  13. Priceless Chief
  14. Sad story and pathetic fish killer.
  15. Nice one Phil. See you in a couple weeks when we are staying at the resort.
  16. We went flyfishing in Colorado and i took my 5wt as a carry on in a one rod case with that has a hard tube. I don't check bags but the wife did so my clippers and hemostats were in her luggage. you can carry on your flies and leaders and vest but no cutting instruments. I would never check a fly rod. My buddy even carried his two piece on in a case and it fit in the overhead.
  17. Not working this morning.
  18. Can't believe you got bored doing that Tim with a 2wt.
  19. The first time I was on Taney was back in the 70's. I had a 5.5 hp motor and rented a jon from the old Roark resort. The dock guy said go up so we did and it took us over an hour to get where Lilley's is today. Don't know what they were running but we were wide open and going slow. If you can go up and drift back like Phil and Bill said you'll be ok. My old 5.5 did fine below the bridges.
  20. Last week I was trolling three rods at Truman and one got hung when I was turning the boat and got pulled in. As I brought one of the other rods in I felt some drag on the line and had snagged my own rod. Brand new baitcaster that I had only been using for and hour. Lucky.
  21. We did that one year and we like Taney better. On the river you are at the mercy of the dam and the water can really go up and down a lot.
  22. Great news Phil. Stay safe.
  23. Amen to that Phil.
  24. Prayers for Phil, family and the Lilley's team and all our friends on Taneycomo.
  25. Don't know where she went. I was at the Station last summer and she was not around. I think the shop changed hands a while back.
