  1. I made a post on the Bennett Springs thread but you can go to http://missouritrout.com/weavers for some great pictures of the flooding there
  2. Take a look at http://missouritrout.com/weavers for pictures of the flooding at Bennett.
  3. hfd: I bet you will have plenty of water flow, hope everything works out for you! Nothing worse than he a trip planned for a long time fall apart at the last minute.
  4. RPS: I understand where you are coming from and as stated earlier I basically agree. I do believe in the last 5-8 years more and more people have taken up the sport of fly fishing which has changed the make up of the sport. I did enjoy your thread. Tight Lines Larry
  5. RPS: I agree with your comments. I have no problem with anyone who uses live bait, spinning rod, cane pole, fly rod or any other type of equipment. You are correct about the proper way to release fish, and the increase of mortality to fish handled excessively. I personally have not had any problem with many fish taking flies to deep unless I really go to sleep at the button then I simply cut the tippet and release the fish. About the only time I use a San Juan worm is when the water is high, since you will find many worms in the water during this time. I don't use egg patterns but have no problem with people who do. After all fishing with flies is to imitate the food chain the water has to offer to the fish, which these two patterns do. The very first time I ever went fishing for trout was at Bennett Springs in 1975 using a spinning rod and salmon eggs down by the old wooden bridge, seeing how fast I could catch my limit. Then we started venture up into zone #2 throwing Rooster tails etc. Then I became interested in Fly rods watching others catch far more fish than I could imagine. Man you talk about a big learning curve. I would use the fly rod for about an hour, usually with no positive results, then throw it in the trunk of the car and grab the spinning rod. Finally made up my mind to leave the spinning rod at home & force myself how to catch trout with a fly rod, used plenty of glow-balls back in them days and threw, chuck and duck, a lot of Marabou jigs towards the dam. I do not judge or look down on people based on how or where they fish, and I think the vast majority of fly fisherman feel the same way. Now I do look down on people regardless whether using flies/bait if they keep over the limit or violate other regulations. I was always taught to respect the law. I hate seeing fly fishermen shuffle to catch their fish. Ethics do come into play everyday of our life whether or not there is a written law saying you can or can't do something. I guess this is why the majority of the laws are written for the minority. I don't understand how you determined fly fishermen are "better educated, economically better off, and more inclined to vote" I see a lot of VERY nice high speed fishing boats at Taney with fishermen using power bait, worms or whatever. Does the fact they own such a boat make them better educated, economically better off, and more inclined to vote? I think not. Heck! I think it is great people in this country are able to make their choice of how they spend their leisure time. I agree with your comments about how bad some of the laws are. It makes me sick to think the MDR can issue a permit for a large Confined Animal Feeding operation in the watershed of Roaring River. I think it was great when Missouri changed their definition of a fly, which now allow a fly to have rubber legs like the Madam X which have been allowed in many other states with far tougher regulations than Missouri, such as banning lead, for many years. I guess the answer to all of this is to have respect and treat others as you would want to be treated. Something which is seriously lacking in this country today, and above all don't judge a person my the rod or bait he uses or the clothes he wears.

I would venture a person could surf the Current River today..................
  7. Montauk Park was evacuated early this morning with all the highwater. I looked at the site for water at Bennett. I don't know what all the number mean, but I fished there Wed and it was up and the number for that day showed 2.5 and the number this morning was almost a straight spike to 7.0. I complained about no water for the last 3/5 years so I guess we should be happy some of the ground water should be replenished. Larry
  8. This sounds strange, but sounds like you have "tennis elbow" from the casting! If the pain continues might try the remedy they recommend, it is some type of strap you wrap around your forearm just below the elbow. I'm sure some drug store could help find the product. And the above might not work at all......................
  9. I had some young lady give me a strange, stranger than normal, look at Wally World while looking in the Sally Hanson display I looked at her and said" Dang can't find my shade of nail polish anywhere", She turned around and walked away
  10. UAK: I could be wrong but I think Montauk has a fly only fishing area. I understand where you are coming from, an earlier comment mentioned the fact fishermen of flies (not the type of rod) has the whole stream for 4 months during winter catch and release. Then I think why should a bait fishermen care if someone uses a fly rod with bait classified as live bait? After all a person can use a spinning rod (which I have no problem with) in zone #1 as long as his bait is a fly as defined in the regulations.
  11. Hoosier & No Luck & Paola Hoosier I live in Troy maybe we could hook up and pick up No Luck some where on I-44, these fuel prices are out of the world. I think they were able to train us last year then put it to us this year............... Montauk or Bennett. Paola: My brother-in-law lives in Paola and we meet at Bennett on week days to fish together.... OH ! You need to put a Jay Hawk on that there flag. No Luck and I met up one time at Bennett, others were suppose to show but we were it................
  12. 2 units and rain. Our group will be hitting Gene's on April 23rd for 5 days for some thing like the 10th year. I love it down there..............
  13. Troutbum: I think you would need to use more than just scent on a fly to fish in Zone 3 with a fly. A friend of mine tried to use a fly with a piece of soft rubber on the hook....Guess what? Can't do that. Years age I use to see a old timer ( now I'm an old timer) use a fly rod in the riffles Zone 3 with a minnow for bait, use to catch some nice size trout. Could be wrong and sure won't be the first or last time. I like to fish that area in the C&R winter season, to one in the way..............
  14. mb: For 5 years now I have been wearing LL Bean's "Wicked Tough" Gore-Tex waders with no problems and plenty of time in the water and walking a lot of river banks with plenty of puncture obstacles to get around. The regular sizes go for $300. Check out their web site at llbean.com

A friend of mine has fished Montauk for a number of years and the first time (5/6 yrs) I fished there we went up to the lake. The number of BIG fish around the outlet which drains into the C&R area was unbelievable . He claims there a still large numbers of BIG trout in the lake BUT they stay near the far shore line in the shade of the over hanging trees . I know there is no way I can throw a line the distance required to reach the far shore line. On top of the distance you have a limited amount of room for your back cast. It would sure be interesting to find out if there are many on the other side. Kinda like the old saying "The grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence"

I have been told there are some very big Grass Carp in there also.
  18. FYI I was there last Monday and a spin fisherman was nailing smallies on a Rooster Tail. At the time I talked to him he had already landed app. 20 smallies. This was in zone #3 in some of the slow deeper water just the river side of the whistle Bridge.
  19. Where can I find the pattern to tie a Stump Buster? Need help!
  20. I have the same bottle! My wife bought it for me about 3 years ago. Asked her where the original packaged product went to, she claimed the 5th ...Amendment Rights that is!
  21. Hey No Luck! Just don't slip and end up with the fish Then in the summer time you have to worry about someone falling off the top of the dam and taking you with them for a little refreshing swim Oh! One other obstacle if the guy/gal on top of the dam lets their fly line drop down on the backcast watch out for your hat to take off. About two years ago I saw a guy fall off the dam and go down the bridge side of it. About 10 minutes later I see this guy going back out on the top ledge of the dam to fish and he was soaking wet. When you fish toward the dam up stream you can hear everything thing people are saying and I heard him tell the guy next to him "that was the 3rd time this year I have fell off the dam" The guy he told this to decided to move four steps to his left
  22. Started in St. Louis about two years ago. The way the story goes there are small amount of precious metals in the catalytic converters. One of the stories that hit the newspapers was a women who left her car in a park and ride and when she started the car to head home from work, she heard this loud noise coming from what she thought was the muffler. Took it to the shop and found out the bad news in the amount of $1000 dollars Catalytic Converter missing. With her deductible it cost her $ 500 out of her pocket. Got the car back two later went to work parked in same lot, return and guess what? Stolen again which = another $500 out of pocket.
  23. = = I stay home again
  24. JS: Have you been fishing with Pine Squirrel Streamers at night with the Night Stipping Gang have you? That squirrel might have lost a cousin to Leonard some where along the way.
  25. I have a friend that ties #32 Trico's less than 50% chance for a hook up!
