Yes a 4wt or 5wt floating fly line will work great right now, no need for a sinking line right now, there is a hole or two where it might do you some good, but in most areas it will not be needed. 2 or 3lb line will be best I use 5X (4lb) a lot on opening weekend, the fish are not as line shy opening weekend as they will be later on in the season. The river is in great shape, good flow and it is nearly gin clear right now, if we don't get any heavy rains in the next few days it should be good fishing. Woolybuggers, san juan worms, glo-balls, hares ears, copper johns, pheasant tails, zebar midges, sow bugs and scuds will all be good opening weekend. There may be some good dry fly fishing depending on the weather, last year we caught a lot of trout on beetles, ants, and even hoppers way up into dec. adams, lt. cahills, cracklebacks, griffiths gnats, blue wing olives and about any kind of midge will work in the winter. You need 9' leaders or buy 7 1/2' leaders and tie your favorite tippet onto them, but you need to wind up with a 9' + leader. Good luck.

trout stamp is all that is needed. It can be busy if the weather is nice.

Clear water copper and amber are different I just had new Pair of glasses made in the amber. They do have bi and trip focal lenses. They may do no line style also. Google their website and look it over.
-
Action optics/smith optics make a great amber lens, that is what I use 90% of the time, my second choice would be the light brown. I've been wearing action optics for 30 years, and been selling them near that long, they have always been good for me, but there are a lot of nice glasses on the market now days.

Fishing was pretty good today, spent all of our time at outlet 1, 4 units going, #2 outlet was packed with humans. I got there about 8, and left at 11:30, caught maybe 20 trout, and two bluegill, only caught one brown, but there were a few around, only saw 2 that might have been over 20" most were small. All the rainbows we caught were nice, a few were around 17" most were 13-15" fish, a few were smaller. I was fishing with an old fart that comes in my shop alot, he had spent 3 days with his brother at taney a month or so back and neither had caught any throut in those 3 days, when I left, I think he had landed 6, and he was still there when I left, not near as many big fish as last year at this time, hope they are still comming, the water was warm, but all the trout we caught were in good shape, had a few jumpers. Lots of fish were being caught by the fisherman that were standing right in the chute at outlet 1, looked like red san juan worms were what they were using. Richard and I were using cream colored san juan worms with either a zebra midge or a larva lace scud in gray, used very small flies #18 mostly except for the san juans, they were tied on #10 and #12 scud hooks.

9/10s of an inch of rain yesterday and last night, the river didn't change any. I'm going to go down and fish this afternoon. I'm waiting on a delivery of pellets for this winter and then I'm leaving.

The Trout Flies Of The Ozarks
timsfly replied to zander's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
I'll send you a few flies in the next few days, I think you should try to get an original crackleback. It would make a great addition to your painting. -
No, barbless hooks are not required, but I would reccomend them, eaiser on the fish, and eaiser on me when I hook myself. Makes releasing a fish a lot quicker.

River is in great shape, clear and good flow. I've been catching some nice fish on pheasant tails, with a micro egg dropper. I have been doing pretty good on small #16 or #18 copper johns, and I'm also fishing them with an egg dropper, my micro eggs are #18's or smaller. There are still some good caddis hatches in the afternoons, and blue wing olives are still hatching off in the morning and afternoons. If it stays warm, the beetles and hoppers are still good in the afternoons. I have been catching some nice fish on green, or light colored cracklebacks. Use 7X or 6X tippet, 7X will work best. The right amount of rain in the right place will cause R.R. to flood pretty quick, but the kind of rain they are calling for this week, shouldn't be enough to mess the river up, go to the home page on Ozark anglers and go to the water levels and you should be able to watch the gauge and see if the water level rises, good luck.

Phil has a bunch of those in his fly shop. 367 River Lane Branson Missouri USA 65616 1-888-Lilleys I bought some real nice lead heads last time I was in there, he had a great selection. I'm sure he will mail order.

Roaring River is open during the winter, that is some of the best fishing over here. C&R should start on the 14th of nov. and it is open fri. , sat. sun. and mondays. Thru till the second full weekend in feb. Fishing hours in the winter are 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. Winter fishing is what a lot of us wait for, very few people and lots of big fish, and the dry fly fishing is good most of the winter.

BPS and Cortland both have a bag like that, for around 20.00 I think, the cortland may be a bit higer. I've used the one from BPS, it has never leaked yet.

Well we have had a dab of rain, not enough to effect the river but it has cooled things down. Lots of nice fish this week, the hatchery is stocking lunkers every friday night, or they have the past 3 weeks, and I was told they would continue for awhile doing this. Some dry fly fishing this past week, mostly caddis, and Blue wing olives. Cracklebacks worked well, as did adams drys. Olive woolybuggers, and black woolybuggers caught alot of fish also this week. Pheasant tail nymphs, sow bugs, burlaps, copper johns, and brassies were very effective also. San juan worms, glo-balls, bright thread jigs fished very well all week. Jig fisherman did very well, the water is a little lower and clearer now, so the micro jigs worked well, olive, black/yellow and white seemed to be the best colors. Marabou jigs in olive, black/yellow, brown, tan, and purple worked well also, we have been using a lot more of the 1/32nd, 1/16th ounce jigs this year. The water is clearing well, so time to switch back to 2lb line if you haven't already. Eggs and worms are still as good as ever, eggs, best colors have been white, orange, and hatch brown. On the cloudy days, flo. yellow and chartruse have been good. worm colors have been cheese yellow, white, and orange. Roostertails and small spoons have been working well all year, the small little cleos, colorado spoons and the kastmasters have been working best, gold, or silver seem to be the best colors now that the water has cleared up some. Roostertail colors are still, black, skunk, brown, and frog green. Zone 3 is fishing well, several nice fish were taken out of the pool just behind the new bridge, one was a 4lb brown, and the other was a 23" rainbow (released) saw this one on the fellas camera on his phone. Good luck on the river this week.

I'm not getting any pop ups either ? Sounds like operator error at B.C.O.

I'm having a replica done, I hope it will be ready by march 1st 2009

Water has really dropped quick this time, we are only a foot above the level befor the flood. Water is still murky and the flow is still strong. But much better than expected. If it continues to drop like it has the past few days, it will be decent this weekend, and good all next week, as the weather service is not calling for any rain for awhile. The water is greenish brown now, and will get clearer everyday. The fish were really on big black buggers yesterday and chartruse glo-balls were good also, and several nice fish were caught on san juan chamois worms.
-
Water is high and murky but is dropping quickly, it is already down about 6' from yesterday morning and it looks much better this morning. I fished a few minutes this morning, sinking line, big woolybugger and caught 3 in about an hour, I fished up near the spring, the water is much clearer up that way. Lots of fish in the river, two over 6 lbs were caught yesterday, both on power eggs, you never know what will be caught after we get high water like we got this weekend. I suspect there will be some big fish caught the next few weeks out of the upper end of the park. Saw a lot of fish caught this morning, most on Power Eggs, and few were catching them on black Rooster Tails. In this type of water the Power Eggs will be very effective, the flo. yellow, orange, and chartreuse will probably work the best, brown will still be good if you are fishing near the hatchery. In this type of water fly fishing can be tough, so long thin diameter leaders are best, these will help your flies sink faster with less weight. Flash back nymphs, woolybuggers, brassies, anything with a bit of flash in it will work well when the water is murky. Don't think the dry fly fishing will be any good until this weekend, and maybe a bit after that, as soon as the water clears we will go back to the Adams, beetles, caddis, midges, and hoppers. Glo-balls, San Juan worms, and thread jigs will fish well in the high water. If you are using jigs, then jigs with a bit of flash in them or bright colored, will work best, the 1/32 and heavier jigs work best right now. In zone 3 Power Bait and nightcrawlers will be working well, in the murky water minnows will still be effective if you have a net to catch some or you can buy them at some of the local bait shops. In the murky water small Rapala crankbait minnows, gold spoons and about anything that will sink fast will work for the spin fisherman. Call the shop if you have more questions, I'll be in Alaska the next 2 weeks so there won't be a report next week, so call the shop and talk to Duane or Jeff, they can give you info on water conditions, good luck. Closed on Wed. Have a great week on the water.

Roaring River came up about 8 feet last night, it has dropped a few feet already, but it will be tomorrow before it is decent fishing, people are still fishing today, and catching a few on power eggs and plastic worms, not so well for the fly fisherman, wait a day or two before comming down. Dry hollow was big again last night, flooded the entire park, the DNR evacuated all three campgrounds last night. The campgrounds will be opened back up today.

rigging a bead egg, this is what I think is being done, I hope so, I'll be there in a week and I hope this is how it is done, this is what I've been practicing:) http://www.troutbeads.com/How_To.html

Large jigs 1/16th-1/8th are going to work good all weekend, gold spoons are always good when tthe water is off colored and high. Spinners fished slow and deep will be good this weekend also. Lures like super dupers, are good choices also, they fish a lot like a spoon. Sinking crankbaits like a #3 or a #5 black/gold rapala is good, or the silver/black #3 or #5 sinking rapala are going to work this weekend.
-
The river is already comming down, but it will take it a week or so before it is good fly fishing again, maybe decent nymphing in the upper area by this weekend, but zone 2 will be nasty till the first of next week, it might be better by saturday or sunday.
-
Water came up a bunch last night, it has fallen to where you can fish it now at least in zone 1, zone 2 and zone 3 are nasty right now, the C&R area is not fishable right now, maybe by the weekend Dry hollow is flooded and is running high and brown, this is what is making the lower sections of the park so murky, the upper end is high, but not near as brown, more of the murky green color, any way here are some pics, they tell the story better. http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P9040039.jpg http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P9040038.jpg http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P9040040.jpg http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P9040042.jpg http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P9040043.jpg

Water is rising at the park, it has come up 6" or maybe a bit more, it looks like it will continue to rise. Now this doesn't mean it will flood, it has stayed pretty clear so far, but is starting to get murky. http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?07050152 For the rise of water check the above site. So far we are in good shape, the river can take a bit more rain before it gets real bad.
-
No problem on the loaner, glad I could help. No as far as I know droppers are ok everywhere in the park. I have a MDC document that tells me it is ok to fish droppers at Roaring River State park.

Water is still in fine shape, this is the best shape the park has been in for the past few years, I can't remember when we had this good a flow of water in sept. We are still getting in some good dry fly fishing, beetles, ants, grasshoppers, stimulators, cracklebacks, caddis, griffiths gnats, lt. cahills, and adams are all working great right now. Water is pretty clear so fishing a 9' 7X leader will really help you right now, you can use 6X but it will cost you a few strikes. Nymphing has been good also, pheasant tails, burlaps, sow bugs, and copper johns are all catching fish right now, I use these nymphs a lot, and use a small micro egg, zebra midge, or a very small copper john as my trailing fly, I find using 2 flies right now really increases my catch rate right now. I will set this up using a #14 or #16 lead fly, I will place a #4 or #6 lead shot about 8" above this fly, and I will then tie on about 20" of 7X tippet to the hook shank of my lead fly and tie a small #20 or smaller nymph to this line, I will usually use a small pinch on float about 3' above the last fly, so I'm fishing about 36" most of the time, this method has really worked this summer. San juan worms, glo-balls, thread jigs, have all been good this past week, fish these under a 1/2 teardrop float if you are using a spinning rod, and a pinch on float works well when fly fishing. I do well using the tan, olive or the black woolybuggers right now, bigger ones in the mornings(#8's or #10's) and smaller ones in the afternoons(#14 baby buggers) Marabou jigs are very effective now, the black/yellow, green/yellow, white, tan, and the brown/olive have all been working well. Micro jigs are good now also, the olive, white, black/yellow and the tan have been working best. Power eggs in the white, hatch brown, and the orange have all be good this week, if you are using plastic worms, then the orange, white, cheese yellow and the pink have all been working well. Spin fisherman you need to use the 2lb ling right now, maxima, p-line, vanish, or the seagaur is best, don't use stren, trilene or any of the braided lines out there, these will spook the fish when the water is this clear. In zone 3 minnows, nightcrawlers, and white powerbait paste has been working. Good luck this week. Sept fishing hours are 7:30 a.m.- 7:15 p.m. Tim's Fly Shop
