Fishing has been great, the rains have left us unscathed and the the river remains normal and clear. I have been catching a lot of trout on cracklebacks, adams, beetles, ants, hoppers and caddis. I fished an hour or so yesterday and landed 18 in the middle of the day, I close at 2 on sundays just so I can go fishing if I want. I'm using 6X or 7X tippet most of the time, my leaders will be 9' right now. Still catching plenty of trout on nymphs, pheasant tails, copper johns, black, brown and gray zebra midges are good, sow bugs, burlaps, hares ears and small prince nymphs are working very well right now. I'm fishing most of my nymphs at about 3' right now, but in a few places you'll need to fish only about 18". Glo balls, san juan worms, black, brown, olive and tan buggers and leeches work well most of the day, and we are still doing quite well on the baby buggers in the same colors. Plastic egg and worms are still catching lots of fish, orange, orange/white, cheese, white, and flo. yellow have all been good colors. Spinners are still working in the mornings(30 minute wonders) black, brown, white, olive and the skunk have all been working well. Jig fisherman are really doing well right now, the water is great for sight fishing and the jig fisherman are catching trout on olive, black, brown, white and tan Roaring River specials. If you are using Micro Jigs, tan, olive and black/yellow have been the best colors. Good luck on the river this week, fishing is great right now

Any Native Ultimate Kayak Owners Here?
timsfly replied to Forsythian's topic in Lodging, Camping, Kayaking and Caoneing
I like mine, easy in and easy out, lots of room for stuff. -
Fished Bennett today, lots of little fish, but they appeared to be healthy, they were mostly little 14" torpedoes, they fought well. Fished from the dam down to just below the hatchery outlet, caught most on a white Roaring River streamer, AKA gut imitation

That is one of the things that makes this forum so good, it's all the good people on the forum. Everybody helping everybody, is a good thing.

Zone 3 you can fish anything you want, above the dam up to the mouth of dry Holler is zone 2. Missouri has a wide definition of what they consider a fly to be. Lots of lures are legal in zone 2, best thing to remember about zone 2 is, no rubber baits, no plastic baits, and no treble hooks, and that will keep you mostly out of trouble

Had a great morning fishing on Roaring River today, the river is in great shape, water is running at a normal flow and is clear, making for some great fly and spin fishing, I'm still using 6X tippet on my fly rod when using nymphs or buggers, and I'm using 7X when fishing dry flies. My best fly this morning, early was a black woolybugger, I landed 12 on a #8 bugger, and after the bugger bite slowed, I put on a green/grizzly crackleback and landed 8 more rainbows. About 11:00 the blue wing olives started hatching and it was pure fun, a #20 blue wing olive drew a strike on almost every cast for an hour or so, I think I landed another 12 on the B.W.O. and then I put a small #16 caddis on and it worked very well for an hour or so, then it slowed down, by this time I was ready to quit, and I did. Good flies to use right now are #14-#22 adams, #14-#22 blue wing olives, #14-#20 caddis zebra midges #18's and smaller, pheasant tails, copper johns, burlaps, sow bugs and hares ears all #14's and smaller. I used a 9' leader this morning on my 7' 4wt bamboo rod, the 4 wt was needed because of the wind, I would like to have had my 2 wt out, but to windy. I know the black, brown, and the olive roostertails have been working well, as have the small colorado woolie spinner combos, I have had a lot of good reports on orange, white, and flo. yellow power eggs, power bait has a lot of new eggs out this year and a few of them look good. Plastic worms in orange, cheese, pink, and orange peal were good all last week and unless we get a water change these colors should remain good. Marabou jig fishing is a lot of fun right now, you can really see the fish and it makes for some good sight fishing. On a spin or casting reel, you will need 2 or 3 lb line, p-line, maxima, or mean green will work well, avoid flourecent lines like tri-lene and stren. Still using #10 hooks on the worms and #12 and smaller for the plastic eggs. 3/0 and BB sized sinkers will work best for you right now. Zone 3 is fishing good on powerbait paste, white has been good and orange has been working also corn, nightcrawlers and natural eggs have been working. Good luck on the river, fishing has been great.

Yep, I tie, & use them all the time, it is a very old pattern, they will take trout just about anywhere, work great at all the parks, and I use the in olive, brown, & black/yellow on taney, I fish em a lot like I fish a soft hackle. -

C&r Is Over At The Missouri State Parks

Same fish different day ? It was a good year, but this Is the only one I caught this season that was 12 lbs. I'm sure she had been hooked before, though, I had never seen this fish before, so it might have come up. -
We had a great C&R season this year, lots of nice fish, and plenty of water, this past month blue wing olives and caddis hatched off nearly every afternoon. I was lucky enough today to end the season with a very nice rainbow, she weighed 12 lbs in my weigh net Caught her on a scrambled egg, size #14 Guess I'll have to go back to work, I'm already looking forward to next November.

I would have to vote no, I don't see where people do a lot of damage on the small streams, most people seem to give spawning trout room, and I don't see people messing with the trout that much. I think the water level, herons, ( I would love to see open season on herons about 6 weeks a year would be nice), and other natural things do more to hurt the spawning trout.

Wind was bad, but it would settle every once in awhile. Creek is in fine shape
-
No active redds that I could find, and I walked a long ways today, the fish were active, the wind helped hide my movements, still only landed 3 and they were the smaller 9" to 10" with fading parr marks, caught em all on woolybuggers, in olive today. I fished the upper end, today.
-
We'll go down there and tell them they are doing it wrong, lots of redds They are actively spawning now. Crane creek trout usually spawn in late dec.-feb, I guess that is how west coast wild trout do it. This video was taken a couple of weeks ago. I didn't take the video, but I know the guy very well that did, he fishes crane a lot, he is very good.

There is some spawning going on, fish do it in the water
-
We still get an occasional carp in zone 2, even see a few bass, I think they are stocked by people returning home after a day of fishing, be pretty easy to stop and throw them in off one of the bridges. We had a big catfish in zone 1 for awhile, it was finally caught, I think it weighed 8 or 9 pounds.
-
I've been fishing a tenkara rod for 7 or 8 years now, it has it limitations, especially on big fast water, I fish it a lot on Roaring River, and I've used it on Crane creek and flat creek, and I've used it on some streams out west, a joy on small water, and trout 18" and smaller, I tried it on Taney, it was fun till you hit a hot 16-17 inch fish I've fished it out of my kayak, it is fun for bluegill, and other panfish, I've got tenkara type rods that are 6',7', 10' and one that is 16' they all have their place, but they'll never replace my fly rods.
-
Well they dig here a lot, dry hollow is dumping gravel into Roaring River all the time, every flood refills the area beside the fish cleaning station, and carries lots of gravel down below, I'm glad they dig it out, it is different everytime they do it, so sometimes better sometimes not so much, but always different, not like its a wild trout stream, it has to used by many, many, many people in a years time, so it has to worked on a lot to make it useable. If it wasn't man maintained it would only be a few short years and the fly area would only be a few feet deep it entire length, and wouldn't hold trout very well. I do wish they would look at opening up more of zone 3, they could do bank work and habitat work down there for years and really extend the use of the water in the park.

River is in great shape, up a bit but it fished great last Monday, and should as good tomorrow, just add a bit more weight, heavier buggers, are good, eggs & worms were good all last weekend We even had some baties, and caddis last weekend I fished today on lower RR, only landed 9 trout, but the water was in good shape
-
Looks like glo-balls
-
I use a 6' 5wt Fiberglas or bamboo, 9' leader, 5X tippet for nymphs, and 6X for dries. Any good smooth reel will work fine, as long as it matches the rod.
-
Well depends on the water I'm fishing, and the access to the water, but I usually go downstream and work my way back upstream. sometimes the brush forces you to fish down stream, be very quite, that is usually the main factor for me. You can catch them on drys now also, caddis work all year, as do stimulaters, I fish a lot with buggers, nymphs, san juan worms, and glo-balls. Did not see any signs of spawning fish, but the trout should start anytime.
