Just food for thought but when is the last time you let a nice ten point buck walk by out in the deer woods? Our conservation does an excellent job setting limits and providing eveyone with a chance at catching a trophy fish. I practice c and r religously but I do believe fish and animals were put on this earth for our enjoyment and to provide us with food. If someone catches a trophy then it is up to them to either harvest the fish for the wall or take a picture and turn it loose. I believe that for the most part we do an excellent job on taney in regards to conservation (thats why it's a trophy fishery). Plenty of 10+ pound fish are caught every year, some killed and some released to grow bigger. Regardless what we are doing is working so if someone keeps a 20lb fish for the wall so what, the next person will release one even bigger. Don't get stressed out about what your neighbor is doing just consentrate on your own actions. Remember you are a SPORTSMAN not a jerk.

probably about half of the fish I caught had big heads and skinny bodies. I was fishing the island by point royal using soft hackles. Just wondering if anyone else had experienced this same thing. Some of the fish I caught were chunky and fat with awsome fall colors but a good number were skinny and very pale. Maybe disease?

great fish really pretty color

had not fished taney in a few weeks due to school and work but went yesterday afternoon and caught around thirty fish with many of them being very skinny with poor color. They just looked really unhealthy, anyone have any answers? I have never seen the fish at taney look like this before, I don't know if the DO content has anything to do with it or not.

I fished taney last night got to the boat ramp at shepard around 630pm and they were running water. Caught 8 fish on a pink micro jig, cont. fishing and they shut off the water around 730 and that is when the bite really picked up fish were rising all over the place. I tied on a bead head midge and went to work getting bit almost every drift probably caught thirty fish until I could no longer see my indicator. Caught a nice rainbow probably 4lbs and one nice brown that went around 5lbs. The weather was great and I had that area all to myself. As it got dark I tied on a sculpin I was in the middle of stripping it in when my father called my cell phone as I stopped stripping and went to answer my phone I got a BIG bite, never saw the fish and only had it on for about 30 seconds but it never turned or stopped running in that time span. Fished for another half hour at the boat ramp with out another bite so I drove up to outlet 2 probably 8 people fishing the rebar area so kinda crowded, I fished for another 2 hours and only caught 3 short fish, throwing a variety of sculpin, and leech patterns. A great night to be out on the water the weather was great glad fall is finally starting to show. Ryan Clark

Is gigging allowed on taney during season, I read in a reply that someone had caught a bunch of suckers and filleted them at lilleys? I would think that conservation might be hesitant to let people gig on taney. I guess they could have caught them on night crawlers but I was just curious

I thought about bringing my baitcaster next time, bet I could knock a few off with a big ol zara spook haha J/J but I have given it a thought

the last few times I have fished taney I have seen wave runners all the way up towards fall creek, I was fly fishing from my boat and this guy was cutting donuts one after the other really close to me. I guess you just can't escape them.

I never knew they would eat baby woodies I am a huge duck hunter and would probably have to eliminate any herons with a taste for ducklings. I don't think anyone would miss the sounds of the blue heron.

I fished last monday while they were running a ton of water and a big ol pink egg on a jig head is the only thing they would touch I caught 4 fish on a san juan worm but the rest were on egg patter pink and white

John talk of the little red and Greers ferry bring about fond memories, that is my favorite area and bodies of water. The fishing is world class both lake and river. One thing I have noticed in the years of fishing the little red is that a giant portion of the trouts diets seem to be sow bugs but an even greater portion seem to be aquatic snails. Just wondering why they were not mentioned as a large food source?

Rio makes a shock absorbing leader that has some more strech than others you should try that I use them from time to time with 7X tippets

I was wondering if anyone has any helpful hints about catching carp on a fly rod. I have caught a few fishing dry flies for bluegill and have caught a couple on w-buggers fishing for bass but I would really like to target them, any tips would be appreciated.

catch them with all the listed techniques, it just depends on the water conditions. You really need to fish there sometime it's the only lake in the world where 3 world record fish have been caught within a 20mile radius. Plus it is an absolutly beautiful lake, very deep very clear. I hear lots of people comment on how beautiful table rock is but it is a distant second to greers ferry, and that says something. I would be glad to give you any helpful hints if you decide to make a trip down there sometime. 3 years ago I ran into larry nixon in a gas station over there as his home town is bee branch and we talked fishing for awhile he is a super nice guy and one heck of a fisherman.

Just got back from the lake last week and the fishing was incredible walleyes were biting like crazy along with great bass fishing kentuckys and smallies. Fished from narrows to devils fork and had good luck in all my favorite spots, ended up catching sixteen walleye one afternoon, all good healthy fish. That slot limit has really done some good no wonder this is my favorite lake.

Mr. Lilley you don't need to limit yourself to fishing a depth of 40 feet or greater you can be just as effective or even better shallower. It depends on conditions. One thing to keep in mind is that the shad are going to be bigger you are not going to see the fry like you do at the end of may or later summer months. I would try and buy minnows maybe mediums because they would be a little smaller and stand out. If you net and use the same size shad that are below your lights it's like a needle in a stack of needles. Not saying you can't catch big numbers of fish on netted shad but I think it helps to have something that stands out. I also like to use jigging spoons when fishing under lights fish them next to your minnows and you will increase the number of bites on your minnow while also catching fish on the jigging spoons (usually bigger fish). You can also be very effective by fishing right in the middle of the shad ball, using a jigging spoon or a 1/4 oz jig with a 3 in grub let that fall through the shad ball. The whites and crappies wait outside the shad ball and will dart through the middle to grab a shad. By catching their attention with a falling jigging spoon they think it's a wounded shad and will take it just experiement and I am sure you will catch fish. Ps let me know how you do I love to night fish it's a great way to relax best of luck ryan clark.

I fish the little red river alot and they have some natural reproduction with rainbows (more w/ browns though) but they say if the fish can get back into feeder creeks where the beds won't be disturbed from generation than they have a much more productive spawn so control of generation makes perfect sense to me well neat pics

April 5, 2006 Stockton Lake Fishing Report

just wanted to say thanks for the helpful reports you always post and to inquire as to how deep you have been catching your walleyes I am sure they are moving up shallow to feed, have you been catching any in the middle of the day? Are any smallmouth being caught (big ones) well thanks -
hey I have been thinking the same thing about those large bass I know people say they have caught some ten pound fish out of there so that has really peaked my intrest. Castica makes some awsome swim baits in rainbow trout color 6-9 inches and up and I can assure you a big brown would also smash one of those. I have been planning on trying it as the weather continues to warm and I get some time off from school and work, well best of luck

it's a shame to hear about the decline of the kentucky population as they are my favorite of the black bass family, usually a very prolific fish they will tend to over populate a lake if not managed properly, they have great color and fight like crazy. I just started to fish TR this summer when I moved to springfield and have had several good days with 30+ ky,s but never and 100+ plus days on TR. Hopefully with proper management they will make a rebound so we can reap the rewards
-
those fish are actually hybrid stripers don't get quite as big as stripers but are a boatload of fun to catch

I am taking a buddy of mine to taney and he dosent fly fish so I am gonna have him throw a jig and float, I always like to tip my jig with a wax worm does anyone know where I can get some, we will be fishing from my boat below fall creek
