The north fork has a really good population on stoneflys. That is the reason for the rubberlegs working so well. Most other streams in missouri don't have the populations that the north fork has.

What Type Of Scale Do You Use To Weigh Fish
motroutbum replied to jay bird's topic in General Angling Discussion
I'd get a boga. they are a little more pricy, but come in 30 and 60 lb limits. Plus they are really easy to use. -
Yeah Im a pretty long way from where I call home. I grew up here. Not much to report. Out of 2 days of fishing, I caught about 8 fish per day. All on nymphs. I also saw some HUGE small mouths. my brother caugt a lot of huge bluegills and my dad blanked. I only saw one or to other fisherman with fly rods. It seemed as most of the water was more conducive to spin fisherman. Was not impressed with the lack of riffles. I apologize for the briefness, but there isnt much to report.

kinda funny....im in that picture that you posted bman. Im talking to my dad behind the guy in the orange shirt fishing the confluence of the 2 channels. I was there that day with my dad and brother. By far, this is my least favorite trout park. Although I did catch a nice rainbow that would have gone 5 lbs. 21 in long. Ill post a picture of it when I get them off my brothers camera.

extremely dangerous way to keep your boat "drifting" in a straight line.

Critique: Fly Tie Hooks

I use Tiemco almost exclusively. I have had way too many bad experiences with Dai Riki, Daiichi. They break too often in a vice or when you bend the barb down. I think that they ware cheaply made. Mustad does make a scud hook, the C49s. I tie alot with the 2499 spbl, 100spbl, 5263bl, 2457. I think that the TMC 200R is the worst hook ever made. I really like the curve of the shank, but the point and bend of the hook are way to short for such a long hook. For big flies, I like gamakatsu hooks especially for salt water patterns. -
I'm just speaking from my experience just like you and everyone else.

I know this "ain't scotland". Dont get your panties in a wad because none of my posts were directed at you. Yes trolling around with a wooly is a sure fire way to get into fish for a beginner. No I havent fished in scotland, but yes as a matter of fact I have fished Lower taney in a boat with a fly rod, and yes i did catch quite a few fish. Is there really a "sure fire" fly? thats good that you carry 3 fly lines with you when you go fishing. You obviously dont understand competition fishing then. 15 does mean I know what im doing. It means that I dont add weight to the leader, its all in the flies or in the lines, and I am set for every condition that may pop up. Most British anglers carry 30 different lines. Those chaps are the best lake anglers in the world. Learn to fish Loch style then come talk to me.

hahaha michael on the lake everyday id like to see that. Most of the other names you mentioned fish the upper lake with the exception of trav, phil or bill. Fishing out of a boat for trout, in the lower lake where it is actually a LAKE, is way different than fishing the first couple miles below the dam.
-
You should get a book on fishing lakes for trout. It will be better than any information that Michael or bass pro could give you. In trying out for the US fly fishing team, we have to fish lakes, and now we are fishing in strictly lake competitions because the next world championships are in Scotland and there will be 4 lakes fished and one river. It is a tough game to try to find the fish. The easiest way to try to find fish is to troll around with a wooly bugger. If you are just starting out, lake fishing is rather complicated. When I fish lakes, I have no less than 15 different lines to cover every situation.

We just got these into the shop today and I cant wait for mine to get here next week. This jacket is also brand new this year as part of Simms revamped line of clothes and waders. It is a single layer wind stopper fleece with a water resistant soft shell. 100% breatheable. I say water resistant only because the seams are not sealed with waterproofing tape. Dont expect this softshell to keep you 100% dry in a torrential downpour, but it will keep you dry if a sudden storm catches you off guard. Ill give a more detailed review after I get mine in.

I would Highly recommend Rio products, but you should probably go with a rio grand or the new rio gold. Both lines are excellent all around fishing lines. I would also not go with a multi tip lines. They are nice for convienece on trips to be able to switch lines in a hurry, but for all around fishing you should stick with a single line. THe multi tip lines also hinge where the loop to loop connection is made with the running line and the new 30 ft tip. You will have to learn to cast again to compensate for the hinging effect. Rio lines all the way.

We just got the new Rivershed Jackets in the shop. If you didnt know, I'm the new shop manager at Backcountry Outfitters. The Rivershed is the newest jacket to the Simms line of products. Made from Gore Tex performance shell and Gore Tex Paclite fabric, this jacket will make a nice addition to your rain wear retailing for just under $280. You may ask yourself why you would need to spend the extra money on another jacket, especially if you already have a G3 guide jacket, or even the Classic Guide jacket. Well the answer is that this jacket is packable. It is also a heck of a lot lighter than other jackets of the same class and be more comfortable to wear in the warmer months. With proper layering, this jacket could also double as your full time outer shell to the elements if you haven't already purchased a Gore Tex product. Some of the features include a lightweight adjustable hood, adjustable and breatheable cuffs, and fleece-lined handwarmer pockets. If you have any questions about this jacket or any of the other new products, feel free to stop by the shop and take a look at this awesome new jacket.

It would be a waste of money to go to a guide school. Im glad that I was just handed a job as a guide and didnt spend the money on having someone give me a piece of paper saying that I completed their "guide school." I learned to row on class 3 and 4 water. Most guide schools will teach you how to row on class 1 and 2. Rowing a boat is deffinitely not easy.To be a guide in Colorado you have to be white water certified which means that you have to spend 50 hours under the supervision of a certified instructor. A certified instructor has to log 1500 river miles floated. You have to keep a log of your trips, who the party leader was, where you floated, the date(s) of the trip, and all the contact info for the people in the party, and also river miles traveled and hours loged. Trust me it is not worth losing your license because you didnt keep good records. The water patrol does do checks. All of the guys I worked with in Durango got checked at the begining of every year. Guiding is not all the glory that most people think it is. You WILL have bad days where you cant catch any fish. You will have the client(s) from hell. You'll get the guy who tells you he has fished everywhere and caught all these exotic fish and cant cast past the oars. Learning to clean and rig the boat, quickly rig and re rig flies leaders and tippets. Guides are professional knot untangle-ers. You'll get the people that think that they are on a the green river in utah, when they are on the yampa and think that since their guide on the green did something that you should be the exact same way, or that you should have 50 fish days everyday on a river that on a good day gives up 5 fish. Tying flies every night to make up for what your clients lost the previous trip. spending money on tippets and leaders. You may guide on a river that you may never have fished yourself and put your clientson fish. Im deffinitely not trying to discourage you from becoming a guide im just exposing the stuff that gets looked over by all of the glamour. If you have any questions, stop by and talk to me at backcountry outfitters, id be glad to talk rowing and guiding.
