Thank you troutchaser. That is all im asking. I understand most of you are amatuer fisherman and tiers. And just like I said in my previous post, I understand that most of you have other priorities besides fly fishing. Terry, the idea of the swap is not to Umpqua catalog quality flies, I agree with you, I was just asking for a little help on the participants part to do the best work that they are capable of. Im not trying to make my self sound eliteist in my posts. Im just speaking from experience. Yes I do consider myself and advanced/professional tier, because I do tie for my fly shop and my flies have to appeal to the customers, becuase if the people dont think my flies look good I wont sell them. I enjoy everyones flies and the commaradarie and recieving the flies. For the host of the fly swap it is like Christmas whenever there is a swap. I really enjoyed getting all the flies. Im not calling them junk either, I was just saying to make the flies to the best of you ability. and send the best ones. If you think I have an eliteist attitude then thats alright. I am more than willing to share my knowledge with anyone who wants to know.

I know I have only participated in one fly swap on this site, but I have some tips for the people who do participate. I meant to post these after the fly swap we had in October, but lack of having a computer with internet kept me from posting. When you pick a fly for the fly swap, dont pick a fly you have never tied before. If you do, dont let the first fly you tie of that pattern be a fly for the swap. You should tie several if not a dozen before you start tying for the swap. Get your brain and fingers used to the proportions that are necessary for the fly to turn out right. One of the things I noticed was some poor quality of the flies that were tied. Several of the ties would not be fishable due to the head of the fly being covered with tying thread. one way to solve this, is to tie, and to tie often, not just once a week or every two weeks. but try to tie half a dozen flies every day or every couple days. another way to solve this is to use thread that is sized correctly to the size hook you tie. This is an exaggeration, but you dont see people tying on size 16-20 hooks with size 3/0 thread. make your heads clean. I realize that probably none of you tie for money, but at least try to make your flys look like something you would want to buy. The more you tie, the better you will get...I also realize that most of you are probably thinking "well I dont have time to tie that much!" If you want to get better, then tie more and tie often. The more you do it, the better you will get. These are all just suggestions, Im sorry if i offend anyone, im just speaking from experience. Just my $.02 Randy

Less is deffinitely more when it comes to dubbing. make sure that when you are dubbing the fly, you dont dub all the way to the eye of the hook. That was one of the things that I noticed when i hosted the fly swap and looked at the patterns. a good majority of the flies had extremely sloppy heads to the point that you couldnt get a tippet through the eye. Its just something to work on. On the zebras, make sure you have the hook size and bead size matched up. If anything use a smaller bead than what is called for. Most of the water you guys have back home isnt moving fast enough to throw tungsten or to over weight the flies. You want those zebras to almost just float in the water not drag and get hung up on the bottom. It just depends on how you are fishing also...I never use an indicator ever!!! but if you use an indicator then youll be able to adjust how deep they are. just some advice!!!

Those are are really good for nothing hackles. I got some as a gift and have tried them with several different types of patterns and they dont give the right action for anything. Those feathers are deffinitely not meant for tying soft hackles. The barbs are not stiff enough to hold up a humpy even with flotant. The reason partridge is the most widely used is because that was/is the traditional feather to tie s.hackles with. Phesant rump works alright, starling a little better and partridge the best. When you are working with the partridge or whatever soft hackle feather, make sure you strip one side of the hackle. (preferably the side with the least amount of curve.) then tie the hackle in with shiny side forward. tie in the tip. If you dont tie it in by the tip, your hackle wont turn out right.

its either a baetis or a callibaetis. and deffinitely a spinner. To tell the difference between a spinner and a dun, you look at the wings, if they are clear then they are spinners. As for the speckled wing quill, or the march brown, or the hendrickson, you have to look at the ranges of the insects. You cant just make your assumption on color or hues. The type or water we have at taney just like anyother tailwater suggests that it is a baetis species. Callibaetis are usually found in lakes, and the baetis in rivers. The most common species of mayfly in tailwaters are baetis.

if you fish an indicator rig, then go with the loomis. The Z-axis is a high performance rod designed to throw tight loops in the wind or for delicate dry fly presentations. A 10ft 4wt Loomis GLX is the ultimate nymphing rod.

The Dangers of Tying Your Own
motroutbum replied to Danoinark's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
I had just explained this technique to a client this summer on the San Juan. Not 10 minutes later while i was unhooking a fish, the dropper fly got jammed into my hand with the fish still attached to the other fly. I had to have my client do the "surgery" on me. Super easy procedure to perform, especially for someone who has never touched a fly rod before. -
It depends on what you want to spend. Just like everything else. But Dr. Slick anything are the best you can get.

You could just look me up at the Caddis Company in Durango. Right on the Animas River and its only an hour to the San Juan. There is a KOA right out side of town to Camp Which is also right on the river. We also have access to some high country streams and to some private sections of tailwater on the Los Pinos "The Pine".

motroutbum replied to BuschTrout22's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
look up Charlies fly box and it should give you what you are looking for, since charlie and John Barr are pretty good friends -

super glue breaks down in water

THe flashabou is tied inon the top of the hook and then wrapped around the hook to create a segmented body. you can wrap all the way to the bead and tie off. once you are ready to start the wingcase, tie in on top of the hook, then dub and pull the wingcase over...then tie off.

I never got them michael. I dont have the blood midges either, all of the packages are ready to be mailed. Im gonna be back in springfield on tuesday, and I dont really want to have to haul all the containers back with me. If every one wants me to, I can just send the ones that I have and then mail the others when I get home???? let me know what you think

Not really....a lightening bug is tied like a phesant tail on a straight shank hook and uses peacock as the thorax not dubbing. It is tied with krystal flash and not flashabou.

A Question for the TFO Experts
motroutbum replied to RiverRunner's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
I have been traveling alot lately and you can carry rods on. it is much easier to carry on a 4 pc, you can carry on 2 pc rods also. you just have to find the overhead with a brace that has a hole in it so it will fit. I only used to use 2 pc rods and now i only throw 4 pc. The technology of 4 pc rods now is so good that you cant tell. It all comes down to personal preference. By the way, ill be back in springfield on tuesday. -
yes that is the pattern. for the pearl one, you use red thread, just as the picture shows. It started in the Umpqua catalog, well at least that is where he originally submitted it. It is a very effective pattern.

yeah....that condom worm was originally tied by Vladi. Its gonna be in the umpqua catalog next year

Yeah. Its Lance Egan's fly. It was a great help to have that fly on the kings river this weekend. Hook: TMC 2487 #12-20 Thread Red 8/0 Bead: Nickel Tungsten or Pearl glass bead Tail: 3 phesant tail fibers Abdomen: Flashabou-pearl medium for smaller sizes, large for larger sizes Thorax: Wapsi Rainbow dubbing Wingcase: flashabou-pearl

Why not create a 2nd "Restricted Trophy Zone" On Taney???
motroutbum replied to Fozzy's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
It is set up to grow trophies. Thats why there is a slot limit. The slot is also the reason that we have such a high average fish. I'm pretty sure that it is 15in or better. which is really good. There arent many places in the states or probably world for that matter that can say they average 15 in fish. Out here if you catch a 15 incher then that is considered a hog. Ive had to get used to just settling for the 10-13 inchers and sometimes get a fish over 20. (rare, but ive caught 10 this summer bringing my total for the last 2 years to 193) It has taken years for the slot to kick in, but it has kicked in and thats why we have such a great fishery. -
Man.....you should have looked me up. I was guiding down there last week and on sunday. Or even come up to the shop in durango. Did you mail them from down there? Terry you kind of forgot your toe tags......am i supposed to make them myself????? Sorry for the delay, I am leaving wed to go to fresno so now there will be a delay on getting the flies back out to everyone. Ill probably end up just mailing them when i get back from MO. Ill be back in springfield around the 1st of november if not that day!!

the only problem with the belt is you cant wade past your waist. Not that there are many places to do that at taney, but for other applications.
-
I agree with you there. I dont think that there should be a blank check waiting for them, but i do think that it should happen. Sorry i didnt clarify which stemcell research i was for....adult. Its too bad that all they want is the money. I dont knwo much of what is going on at home as far as all the propostions go right now. Its bad enough that I live in colorado and have no clue whats going on in this state, because in Durango all of our news is from Albequrque. its pretty lame. Its pretty much like if we were to live in Branson and get K.C or Fayetteville news.
