Taking Two Boys To Rr, Advice?
brownieman replied to Grant Miller's topic in Roaring River State Park
Just set me thinkin, yeah I know, lol...my kids and gkids really enjoyed being part of all of it . At 7 or 8 they're not little anymore, ask em lol. My girls got to where they liked using worm, bugs they could find...just remember how fun it was for all all of us. Take a minnow trap if you have one, my kids and me had a heck of alot of fun trapping minnows. A reminder, glass traps are illegeal in some streams. Whatever you do enjoy it...they will remember it for a lifetime...bet you will too. Have a great time -
No insult meant at all...just what I call people that use lighter tackle, I got plenty of weenie gear.. Don't anyone take this 'weenie talk' the wrong direction....Phil will be on us, LOL....tempting though

CWF, That's by no means my favorite hole and If someone else catches a nice one due to something I've posted, more power to em...I'm glad to help out...like i said, I've caught my fair share and those bigguns will break your average weenie fisherman off anyway. To me there is not enouph people left in what can be a cruel old world sometimes so I am more than glad to help out where I can...were all in it together, ya know.

The weather looked condusive by my standards for a bite to be goin on...wrong but kinda hard to tell cause I only fished one hole. Went down Sat. eve right at dark to what I call the cable hole...bout a mile or so below parkers. This hole has been a good producer over the years...as of late I haven't seen anything in this hole. I frothed the water for an hour or so till it was pitch black...not one stinkin fish. To me, maybe wrong, there is a big sob in there either eating everything or running everything outta there...or both, lol. It's a hole that can be driven right to if you know how to get there, so, I'll stay after it till I tear his lips off, lol. The water is back down but still a little off color from all the snow melt.

In the past I have caught and heard of a few bows being caught as far up as Cooks Station during the winter months. If you know where Cooks Station is at that's quite aways up river so it's not unheard of. There is one spot above the hwy 8 bridge that is supposed to hold decent numbers of trout...never fished it just hearsay...may be one of those nasty fishing rumors, lol.

Mixing business with pleasure eh...might as well. Boat ran good...fish bit well, is that kind of a grand slam of sorts? lol sounds you had a good one overall.

Looking For A Good Taxidermist
brownieman replied to smartfish73's topic in Roaring River State Park
Not sure where you are from but there is a fellow in Rolla Mo....'Ozark Taxidermy' His work that I have seen looks pretty darn good...doesn't use fake heads and such. I know the big thing is replicas...that's all fine and dandy but when it comes to trout being a put and take fish I feel a little different towards them. A smallie, yes I would have a replica made but trout are fairly plentiful and IMO the replicas just dont look near as good as the real thing...none that I have seen anyway, it's more than apparant they are fake. Pull up his website..ozarktaxidermy...and chack his work out...have several friends that have used him and they have been well satisfied with their fish and other mounts, deer, etc. Sometimes he takes a while but I feel that's the nature of the business. The best I have ever seen is my friend that used to do taxidermy but he got out of it a few years back...he's the one I uesd to keep some big ones and give him to practice on. I'll attach a couple of pics of his work, one is a mount of a male he did for me and the other is a table top mount of a 28 incher I gave him...wish he were still doing it but, oh well...I also wish I would have bought his supplies when he got out of it and learned myself. Anyway, this guy does fairly good work...worth consideration. -
I have never fished pomme myself but intend to. I know in past years it has been said that you hook up with a musky once for every 30 hrs of time spent fishing. Don't know if this is still the case but there are some dandys in there...suppose to be the premier lake in the state for musky fishing. I have a boat so if someone wants to hit it sometime give me a hollar...would sure be glad to give it a shot if my pocketbook will allow me to do so. I try to hit Truman a few times a year and pomme is kinda on the way so I could possibly kill 2 birds woth 1 stone, ya know. later on

I visit ...aroundthelake.com...not very often cause there are a few on there that are totally rdiculous...it is just a general forum without the various categories, I think the site came over on the Mayflower, lol. Compliments to you and the moderators...this is my most used site bar none. -

Throw in a few pics now and then to make me even more envious...just kiddin, do enjoy seeing pics of catches from anywhere. good luck and be careful on the water

Don't ya hate that when they get your hopes up then ..notta -
Wasn't sure where to put this so I put it under photography. Don't know Phil...might be worth creating a new forum topic concerning vintage pics, equipment and other vintage items. Seems some on here (including myself) enjoy looking at days past...I find it quite interesting. Here's a few things I thought I would share...hope some of you enjoy One pic is of a magazine cover fron 1915 One is a pic of some of my grandads buddies after a trip back in the day one is a pic of the head of a brownie I had mounted probably 20 years ago One is a pic of a bronze sculptue by Mark Hopkins named 'The Release'...his work is amazing and quite valuable. I paid $1,200 bucks for this about 15 years ago and it's present value is right at $7000.00 dollars. One pic is of the plug my grandad was working on a patent for before his death

I do know the cedar strech (white ribbon area) used to recieve 500 fish every 2 weeks. They stock it by boat unless the hatchery is short handed then they stock by truck at 6 different spots.
-
Just one question oneshot...whens the pig roast??...yum yum sounds as if your buddy had a close call...would be a nasty bite, especially on your a$$, lol. Glad you guys had a good hunt and time...makes it all worthwhile. Your first pic was the 'Agony of Defeat', the later pics 'The Thrill of Victory', ya know, lol. good goin guys
-
JD, In past years they typically stock 9000 on the trophy strech, have the numbers changed or does anyone know for sure?? It will be a smorgasboard for the big boys, lol. It will make the stream more active no doubt.

Those large chubs are very good bait...sometimes they run the minnows off and that's all you end up with in your trap. Some of my largest smallies have been taken on huge live chubs, they love em and generally when you use a large chub you will catch a nice one or nothing and they stay alive on a hook well. My favorite has to be topwater minnows...they live forever in a minnow bucket, bait tank and on a hook. Can't trap em but you can seine them in backwater...they are always a treat for me, beautiful minnows too.

To Fillet.......or Not To Fillet?
brownieman replied to BlueWave's topic in General Angling Discussion
I don't care for that little line of bones either...they do score out very easily but do lay at a strange angle. Some do leave the skin on ...my only problem with that is the bloodline which is very fishy tasting. It lays on the outter sides of the fillets so when leaving the skin on you have no choice but to leave the bloodline there. I know on fish such as whites you need to clean all the bloodline off as possible, if not they don't seem to eat near as well unless you don't mind the fishy taste. Don't know why but some fish even the same species have much more of a bloodline than others. To me that's one great thing about walleye and most panfish, nice fllets and little bloodline if any. I can't wait to put the knife to a mess...time is near...
